Sapphire Radeon RX580 Nitro+ 8GB detection problems GA Z77X-D3H

Bought an RX580 Nitro+ 8GB as it was the best card to run on my older Gigabyte SKT-1155 Z77X-D3H Motherboard (i5 3570k Sandy Bridge). Motherboard is one of the early UEFI mobos. Initially could not the RX580 working, but changed a few settings in BIOS and also flicked the BIOS switch on card to Quiet mode and got it booting. Fans etc. have been running ok up to now. Went to power it on last night and while the Sapphire logo on card is lit up the fans don't spin at all. Tried multiple things so far...running out of ideas. I've flashed the mobo BIOS to latest stable F16 and also tried Beta F18i....tried setting PEG first, UEFI only, disabling CSM, enabling legacy, changing card switch position again etc. etc. PSU is Corsair 650W. Tried it in other PCIEx8 slot with same result. Done all the other obvious stuff...disabled onboard graphics, tried HDMI cables, DVI ETC. Note: card was working perfectly in Star Citizen so it's got to be some BIOS setting but I'm running out of ideas. Flashing card BIOS is a last resort as it was working already...plus I can't actually get card to boot or be detected at all now. Sapphire logo is lit up but odd that fans are not spinning at all now. Card is definitely seated correctly. Power connectors are all seated. Suggestions please?

You can check temps and see if they spin up beyond 52-55C.

Yes, idle fan stop is a thing with many cards now. You can set up a fan curve with MSI Afterburner.

As to why it's now not booting, I can't think of why.

yeah thanks guys I know about the idle fan thing as I read it on a forum but odd that the card was working before with all fans spinning and then suddenly nothing bar LEDs on Sapphire logo. I honestly think it's buggy Gigabyte BIOS and probably Sandy Bridge never designed to work with this card. I'm effectively trying to put a 2020 Mustang engine in a 1970's Ford Capri (UK reference!) but I did do my research and it seemed to be the most effective card for the older motherboard that wouldn't result in a bottleneck.

Tried multiple cable swaps...different DVI cables with no success. Currently using a DVI to HDMI cable...tried HDMI->HDMI also. Running out of ideas and close to returning card. Disabled CSM, Enabled CSM with UEFI first/only with no success. Still get BIOS beep codes 1 long, 3 short which means video card not detected. Not sure if anything else I can do...

I wonder if the card is just dead now? I've seen it happen before where a card just dies overnight for whatever reason. Have you tried it in someone else's system to see if it boots in theirs?

yeah I'm thinking this too. I have another spare system but the PSU is too low to run this card...would have to try and bodge it running power connectors over from my gaming PC. The fact that it worked for me initially (took some tinkering...had to flip BIOS switch on card) and the fans were spinning suggests that perhaps it is dead. The other option is to try and flash/update the BIOS on the actual video card but since I can't even get the card to boot/detect that's not looking like an option. Not sure I would get another Radeon card based on this as I've only had good experiences with NVIDIA up to this point.

I was always nVidia up until I got this Sapphire Nitro 570, probably one of the only brands I would buy an ATI card from anyway, not had any problems with it whatsoever. Looks like you haven't not got many options left on fixing the 580 unfortunately.

If you do manage to get it in to another system it won't matter too much if the PSU is a bit low, as long as you can get it to boot and not put any 3D load on it it won't use much power at all, the you could try sorting the bios etc. Hope it works out for you in the end.

take out your PSU and use it in the other system to test the 580, it will tell you straight away if the card is dead

Gave up...couldn't get the card to fit in the mini-desktop to test. I've returned the card and now looking for a suitable Nvidia card that wouldn't bottleneck a i5 3570k. Suggestions welcome. cheers!

I missed this thread for some reason.

RX 500 series should work with any motherboard with a PCI express x16 slot. UEFI and legacy BIOS.

It seems the card was defective from the beginning. Return to shop or RMA is the right course of action.

Recent models of Corsair power supplies are known to be problematic. But usually during heavy load and not at POST.

i5 3570 is a quad core without HT, I suggest you look for a cheap CPU upgrade on eBay, and consider overclocking.

thanks but I think the card worked...initially but now I cant get it to boot at all. I discounted PSU. It's an older Corsair 650W that came with the case...it's a good supply and I was running a GTX 690 Titan in it before with no problems. I removed all non-essential cards/drives to check it wasn't the PSU and still had issues. Tried any number of different DVI cables and BIOS updates/roll backs/CSM enabled/disabled etc. I've pretty much given up as I've spent so much time to resolve it. Any Nvidia card I've used has just worked instantly. To get the 580 booting the first time I had to flick the BIOS switch but even that's not working now.

Failed to work with the default performance BIOS (1411 MHz), forced you to use quiet BIOS with lowered clocks (1150 MHz) and even then died after a while.

I know people with older systems (X58, Q2D) without UEFI support using RX 500 cards without a problem. That card was defective.

thanks I wasn't aware of this card but looks like a more reliable option than another RX 580 and more recent. The last ATI card I had was a LONG time ago...before they were bought over by AMD....so eons ago! I've only had one bad experience with an Nvidia card which was DOA.
