Please help me choose between these monitors, or recommend one

Hi guys, I need help deciding which monitor to buy for gaming. I don't know much about monitors, but these monitors are recommended by most so I guess I can't go wrong?

depends what you want.. desktop space.. or speed..
honestly with that i'd also look/recommend into the monitor i have.. but... the 144hz 4k would probably be good with that setup..

(also you should update your sys specs if you have those now...)

Avoid the PG279Q it has 4ms response time.

PG278QR is "just" 2K gaming monitor.

XG28UQ is 4K gaming monitor with HDR support.

XG28UQ is the best choice unless your brother is mostly into "competitive multiplayers" like CS:GO then its better to go with native 2K for higher FPS during heavy battles.

the hp omen is freesync 2 premium certified, so it has hdr 400 and is g-sync compatible, no problem running it on my geforce at all.

Being the owner of an Asus 4k G-Sync IPS monitor, I should mention that I've had to have it repaired three times under warranty.
First the internal power board failed. When they fixed that, they got a bunch of dust behind the panel and then the replacement panel started having serious ghosting issues, so I'm now on the third panel on this screen. Bad luck? Most likely, but on the plus side, their warranties are worth something.

Also note that their external power adapters get quite hot and toasty.

Besides this, I'm quite happy with the monitor, but I can't say G-Sync fills much of a function most of the time.

Being stuck abroad right now, I have also bought a 1440p, 144Hz Acer screen that works with G-Sync, although it's not certified as such. As I haven't done a side by side comparison, I can't say for sure, but I don't notice that big of a difference tbh, but I guess this varies from person to person.

it's entirely up to what he wants

1440p high refresh will allow good IQ and super fast framerates with 2080S and 9900k,4K will struggle to stay at steady 60 even on 2080S though it'll do for most.

look into aorus 1440p high refresh monitors,they get good press.I can vouch for predators too,they're excellent.

I have the PG278QR I really like it paid around $450 for it 3 years ago after getting 2 PG279Q with terrible BLB and IPS glow.

I also tried the Aoc Agon ips 144hz 1440p monitor and it was worse than the 2 ips asus monitors.


I would probably go with the LG GL850 over The pg279q I messed around with one at my local bestbuy and although ips glow was still a thing and will be an issue on any ips at least every single one I've ever used it had 0 BLB and the overall picture quality was pretty nice.

It's a matter of budget, no?
I presume it's going to be a long term purchase, so maybe consider one of the G-Sync Ultimate models, if it fits the budget.

I agree, some people hate TN other hate ips and some hate VA.....


For single player games and movie watching I prefer the much better blacks of VA... For high fps multiplayer shooters I prefer TN... For normal desktop usage I prefer IPS....

I'm guessing A high speed oled would be ideal but not sure how suitable they are for PC usage due to them being more prone to burn in. I haven't used one of the Gsync ultimate panels but them having FALD is sorta what I'm waiting for in the more $6-800 range with plenty of zones.

I have a 2080s and it's definitely not a 4k GFX...Well not for 2020 and later AAA games anyways....@70fps+
IMO it's pointless to have a TN panel....at least with HDR...they aren't bright enough to work right.
IPS 2k is probably going to be the actual achievable res for another generation...

Maybe some of the cheaper ones have gotten better but the Dell and Acer variants that I looked at when purchasing the Asus model were quite a bit worse while still costing $4-500

I've owned all IPS and VA panel monitors...the one and only TN I've bought got returned because I thought something was wrong with it...
I do know they have vastly improved (seriously improved...like for real) over the last 4 years...You really have to find an issue with any tech these days...they are all good.
TN is the best for gaming...IPS is slower but not by that much, looks better but has black issues...VA needs a better input latency but is overall the best picture.

I had all types too.
It's trial and error IMO,had three different ones before I struck it with xb241yu.

Personally I'd never go back from my 4k screen, as it gives me so much more usable desktop real estate when I'm working.
Sure, it's not ideal for some games, but that's a compromise I'm willing to do, considering the other benefits.

I've been doing every 3 years....the features you get with $700 monitor will cost about less than half that in 3 years...or about the time I'll have a viable GFX to use it.
I see your point tho...
