Speakers make weird popping sound after shut down

Hey guys,

so...firstly I shut down my pc in Windows and then I turn off the "multiplug" (idk if its called like that) in which is my psu cable connected
after the full shut down my speakers start doing weird popping sound every few seconds/minutes
sometimes my mouse will flash too (every few seconds/minutes too)

Can it damage my psu or some other component?

Minutes? I can see this happening for 10 - 15 seconds, but not minutes. That is not right.

Where do your speakers get their power? Are these separate computer speakers with their own power source? Or are they built into your monitor.

I would be more concerned with your PSU damaging something. Any residual voltages in your PSU once power is removed when you turn off the power strip should decay quickly to negligible levels within a few seconds - I'd say 30 seconds at most.

So, in addition to the questions about your speakers, my questions are, are you being realistic when you say "minutes"? If so, how many minutes? If you flip the master power switch on the back of your power supply to Off (0), do you still hear the pops and see the mouse LED flash? If your PSU does not have a master power switch, just unplug the PSU and check.

If your speakers have their own power source, what happens if you unplug their power cord?

I am not a fan of using those power strips in the first place. Have you tried a different one?

alright, its doing the popping sound all night

i have speakers connected to the pc but I mainly use headphones

I didnt try a different one

and it makes the popping sound even when I flip the switch to "off"

At this stage - the issue with your PC is probably your motherboard or PSU. How old is the GIGABYTE p650b you mentioned in the other thread?

everything is old like 1 month

You need to check the wall outlet and then the power strip's outlet to make sure the wall outlet is wired properly and that power is fully cut when you flip the strip's power switch.

You can do this with an outlet tester. Every home and every computer user should have access to a AC Outlet Tester to ensure the wall outlet is properly wired and grounded to Earth ground. I recommend one with a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupt) indicator as it can be used to test bathroom and kitchen outlets (outlets near water) too. These testers can be found for your type and voltage outlet, foreign or domestic, (like this one for the UK) at most home improvement stores, or even the electrical department at Wal-Mart. Use it to test all the outlets in the home and if a fault is shown, have it fixed by a qualified electrician.

I am not sure if I am catching up but I mean its connected to the motherboard which is powered by psu

the culpable is the bulb in the switch; take it out or disconnect it

Try turning the switch on the rear of the PSU to the off position.


Also try with another Power Board your current one sounds faulty as it does not cut all power off when turned off.

As ive said, when I flipped the switch to the off position it was still making the poppoing sound

And im just going to try to plug it in into the wall

Its definitely the PSU.

If the computer runs fine otherwise, probably not.

For the record, I NEVER kill power to any of my PCs, except when doing maintenance, or if I will be away from home for extended periods (like a couple weeks). I just let my computers go to sleep. I also recommend every computer be on a "good" UPS with AVR. While these UPS are often called battery backups, power during a power outage is just a minor bonus feature. Their biggest asset and advantage is the AVR (automatic voltage regulation). Surge and spike protectors are little more than fancy and expensive extension cords as they do nothing for low voltage events like dips (opposite of spikes), sags (opposite of surges) or brownouts (long duration sags). And for excessive surges and spikes, they simply shut off power (if working properly), crashing your computer - never good. A good UPS with AVR will easily and properly compensate and regulate the incoming power with any of these high or low voltage anomalies. So while a surge and spike protector is better than nothing, I would urge the use of an UPS instead and just let your computer go to sleep when you are done using it for the day. If conserving energy is your concern, you can always power off your speakers and monitors with their own power switches.

The other advantage to letting the computer just go to sleep is Windows can then keep the computer updated on a timely basis - always best for security.

i clearly told you earlier what is the problem but you didn't want to understand...the bulb in the switch is a neon bulb which charge/discharge... this is how is functioning..due this you have current passing by in cycles....

Not if the speakers are plugged into a faulty power strip. Ive definitely gotten noise simply by plugging powered speakers into the wrong outlet. Doesnt have to go through the audio input from the PC. Can come right from a bad mains. You might hear it as hum and sizzle. Popping sounds like maybe the switch has some kind of fault and is tossing some voltage where it shouldnt go. Bad switches can do all sorts of weird things too... sound stuff, amplifiers amd such are very sensitive to power going in.

I definitely would not use that power strip, regardless.

You are assuming everything is in perfect condition. Clearly something is faulty and since OxGeNiD (the OP) stated the popping sounds went away when he plugged the PSU directly into the wall, it is pretty safe to assume the power strip is faulty. It could be the power light on the strip is not properly isolated by [poor] design, or through a fault - we don't know.

And we don't have all the information needed to come to a conclusive conclusion either. For example, we still don't know if the mouse LED still flashes "minutes" after power is cut when the PSU is connect to the wall. We don't know if the wall outlet is properly wired and grounded to Earth ground. We don't know how the speakers get their power, if they even need an external power source.

In any case, since this computer appears to be just 1 month old, everything "should" be working properly and if not, still under warranty.

you turn off only one wire not both so power is passing by - like in a serial connection...;due the switch neon bulb ,which may be faulty ( even emit light, the anode and cathode may not be properly placed too close..) the capacitors will charge and discharge once a limit is reached...; the same occur with the led lamps/bulbd used with night lighting switches which has this kind of neon bulb .. the led will flash periodically after power is switched off and the neon bulbs illuminate ....

Power strip clearly doesn't cut the power when it's toggled off. Likely has a short of some kind. Throw it in the trash because it's defective.


For anyone else looking at this thread in the future, basic diagnostics:
1) If speakers make noises when they're powered on by themselves and not connected to an audio source, there's something wrong with power delivery to them or the amplifier in them.
2) If speakers make noises only when connected to an audio source, then the problem is either in the cable (e.g. interference put into the wires) or the source itself (e.g. case not properly grounded/electrical noise).
3) If speakers make noise even when everything should be off, then there's something wrong with power delivery between the system and the mains.

Ehm, the mouse LED doesnt flash anymore, and I dont think I am catching up with those speakers, but as Ive said, they were just connected by usb to my pc (motherboard) nothing more and nothing less

That’s what dirty power sounds like, maybe look into a nicer power bar, or a line conditioner
