Its been 7yrs since I built a computer, I've forgotten how much fun the research is reading all the reviews and all the horror stories time consuming but worth it, I just stumbled upon techpower ups and really liked the feel of the atmosphere here my last computer has served me well and is still going strong , its been lightly over clocked and used for everyday online use to gaming . The Hunt build will do same except I would like to do more bench marking etc , so far I've bought case Fractal design Define 7 w/light tint , MSI 2070 super, Corsair HX850I psu, and Corsair H115i RGB Platinum. I can't seem to make my mind up on AMD or Intel my last AMD was the AMD 64 FX51 and with new chips coming out soon makes me scratch my head , Mobo Iam leaning towards MSI ace or ASUS Hero MSI has been very good to me. Ram Iam going with 32gb brand probably corsair but still open , storage samsung M.2 thats it for now thanks for input.

What are you going to do with the new PC?

It's taken them a while to get back to relevance as Intel has been stagnant for the past five years, but AMD is finally competitive on single-threaded CPU performance, ahead on multi-threaded performance and dominant on power/heat efficiency.

it's a coin toss between amd intel really, both are good.intel better for gaming, amd for video and rendering.
for ram viper steel, team or ballistix elite are best bang for the buck.
mobos - I advise against going by brand recognition and consider them on a case to case basis.

what's your limit for the cpu and mobo ? tbh for a casual gamer/home owner spending $600-700 won't buy you much better experience than $400-450

this is what I consider a good buy from amd/intel atm
10700+z490 will give you top gaming performance for $500
3900x+b550 good overall performance, not the best in gaming but still kinda around stock 10600 level, beastly video/rendering combo for $600

Great advice above me, and I would add - invest in some good air cooling and case airflow. Or water, but AIO's... boxes of problems

Current day chips get HOT

@cucker tarlson has basically covered your options: Intel if you are a pure gamer, AMD if you have a more balanced workload.

That said, I'm primarily a gamer and I opted for AMD for the simple reason that it was cheaper (at the time - December 2019) than anything Intel had to offer. That has changed somewhat with Z490, but at the end of the day, unless you are gaming at super-high resolutions and/or competitively, you won't notice a performance difference between Intel or AMD CPUs - the GPU is, as always, far more important.

It's also important not to forget that AMD and Intel have 6-core CPUs that are not the most future-proof in terms of core count, but offer amazing performance/$.

Hi,
If you want to over pay for corsair at least get the part number off this app
Otherwise trident-z rules :)

That's a good point because I don't game one high level or at high resolutions so the question now is to go Ryzen 7 or 9 or wait for 4000 series to come out , will the 4000 work on the X570

1 As others have said ... common sense says wait for the holiday season .... new stuff will be on the table and today's stuff will be cheaper.

2. Smarter sense says wait till 2021 when superior 2md and 3rd stepping are out.

3. On the MoBo front, I would avoid the budget chipsets ... the just aren't cheaper enough to warrant what you give up.

4, What will you be doing with the PC ? That's the only sensible way one can make a recommendation. Let's make some comparions.

Given your component choices and current 1080p monitor... lets look at some CPU choices.

A. 10700k ($410) versus 3900X ($420)

Gaming: 10700k = 100% / 3900x = 93% (OC'd the 10700K picks up 1.3% / OC'd thre 3900x was slower) .... 10700k is 7.5% faster ignoring the OC advantage / 8.9% OCd

Video Editing: Gaming: 10700k) = 236.5 / 3900x = 252.2 (OC'd the 10700K = 228.6 / OC'd thre 3900x was slower) .... 10700k is 6.6% faster ignoring the OC advantage / 10.39% OCd

Temperature: 10900k = 61C / 3900 XT = 73C

B. 10900K ($530) versus 3900XT ($500)

Gaming: 10900k = 108% / 3900XT = 100 % (OC'd the 10900K picks up 0.8% / OC'd the 3900x was slower) .... 10900k is 8% faster ignoring the OC advantage

Video Editing: Gaming: 10900k) = 229.9 / 3900XT = 247.8 (OC'd the 10900K picks up 1.2% / OC'd thre 3900XT was slower) .... 1000k is 7.8% faster ignoring the OC advantage

Temperature: 10900k = 54C / 3900 X = 79C

C. 10600K ($265) versus 3900XT ($250)

Gaming: 10600k = 107.4% / 3600XT = 100 % (OC'd the 1000K picks up 1.9% / OC'd the 3600XT picked up 0.2%) .... 10600k is 7.8% faster ignoring the OC advantage,

Video Editing: Gaming: 10600k) = 241.0 / 3600XT = 249.8 (OC'd the 10600K picks up 4.2% / OC'd thre 3900XT was slower) .... 10600k is 3.7% faster ignoring the OC advantage, 8.0 % with.

Temperature: 10600k = 56C / 3600XT = 73C

As you can see ... it's a competitive fight up and down ... but for my money, the price difference would not be enough in either case not to get the one that comes out on top.

If it's just gaming ....

D. The 10400F ($180) is faster in gaming than anything AMD has

For what you have so far, I like the 10700k paired with an $189 MSI Z490 Gaming Edge Wifi ... if you gonna go big into the OC thing, I'd move up to the ($289) MSI MEG Z490 Unify which has an outstanding S+ (super overkill) set of VRMs. The Asus equivalent to the Unify. The reviews and user feedback on both boards is up there

The Edge is the best selling board on newegg w/ 87% of Newegg board owners gave it 5 eggs and 13% 4 eggs ... 0% negative reviews
The Unify is up there too is the best selling board on newegg w/ 82% of Newegg board owners gave it 5 eggs and 9% 4 eggs ...9% negative reviews

While Intel kicks tail in gaming as well as photo and video editing, is that the biggest challenge your CPU face ? If you are doing significant brain neuron simulation rendering on an every day basis, then you should look at AMD.

5. As for cooling, I could never recommend a AIO CLC type cooler and it's accompanying science experiment in galvanic corrosion. And while the inclusion of extreme speed fans cane somewhat offset the aluminum rads, that are an assault on your ears.... in excess of 50 dbA. You are not gong to run into issues with the Intel CPUs at stock settings .... (temps usually 54-60C) .... but if you gonna push a 10900k to the limit, you gonna be overtaxing any AIO made today ... even the EK Phoenix 360 which is currently top dog....3C cooler than ya H115i Platinum needs 52 dbA (light traffic) to accomplish that... Anything over 40 dbA is far too intfrusive and 50 is twice that. Of course if you play with earphones... no issue,

it's a coin toss between amd intel really, both are good.intel better for gaming, amd for video and rendering.

Rendering yes .....

Even the $160 i3- 10400F (267.40) trails the $500 3900XT a run for its money (93%) ... being in the middle of the 3600 and 3600X
