HDD1: Loud squeak when operating. Intermittent, random. Not a rotation problem (not consistant).

HDD2: Doesn't appear on system.

Swap the PCB from HDD1 to HDD2.

HDD 2 makes slight squeak noises, but is in general loud. (i.e. not the same squeak noises)

HDD1 behaves the same as HDD2 did before the swap.
HDD1 also still squeaks when on.

So. any ideas on wether I got 2 bad drives together both very loud, and one bad PCB?

I set the squeaky one to zero-out and it remained a completely random squeak pattern.

Installing windows xp through VMWARE fusion on HDD2 It remains yet still a completely random noise pattern.

Both are brand new 80gb IDE seagates.

Both drives store data when using hdd1's pcb.

Nah, they're oem and i have no idea where they were purchased from.. they were red x of death'd so I pulled em out and am playing with em.

Very strange behavior though. I can't figure out whats making the squeaking.. maybe I'll take the cover off hdd 1 and run it and see if I can pinpoint it.

Does seagate rma oem drives?

Would be awesome if i could get 3 free 80 gigs out of it.

Could be loose screw/s somewhere. Also seagate may RMA, but you probably need the proof of purchase.

Noises are a warning sign for all those who listen and make the right choice....back up your data and send them back under warrantee (since you said they were both new)

Check out this link for common hard drive noise before failure.

Obviously :p

I've heard MANY bad hard drives and its obvious somethings wrong, its just the first I've head noises quite.. like this :toast:

Especially considering the drives are both performing excellently.

Did you go to that link and listen to those recorded noises? Did any of them sound like want yours are making? Without anyone actually hearing what you are hearing it is hard to make a correct diagnoses or recommendation, IMO. :)

If both are performing great as you state, the noises are saying differently. Why one shows up and the other doesn't is a problem in itself as well.

Do you have SMART enabled disk? Have you looked for a warning either in the hard drive section of the BIOS or during the POST phase when booting up your machine?

These are 2 simple steps I first take when diagnosing hard drive issues.

They both support smart (7200.9 drives) but I'm using a USB adaptor right now which doesn't allow me to read SMART data through it, though I will look if I can find a computer that will let me

The noises are more of a high pitched grind than what a normal "dieing" hard drive is.

I've since been running XP on one through vmware fusion, and its running great, so i may just use it as a benching drive until it dies :D

Is it a high pitch sound like the sound of the Fujitsu hard drive in the link?

I had a similar problem with 2 maxtor 80 GB, and the problem was a PSU.
Formated them, changed the PSU, and they are still OK, no sounds later.

I actually can't get the link to work (work web filter. Damn its getting smarter day after day, good thing Its my last day tomorrow)

The clicking sounds much like an older hard drives "working" clicks, but much louder, and not quite as often.

3-4 hours now and still going strong.

Under extreme load, it actually sounds like a post BEEP just a little higher pitched.

Sometimes a bad PCB calls for random some some errors in the drive. If you lack power in your PC u'll get your HDDS to spin slow making noise, not to show some partitions/drive in windows,Partitions get damaged.(this is frequent to me as I'm on one rails edge).Usually bigger capacity HDDs hav this prob.Try connecting to some other 12V rsail.

After a few hours use, the swapped board drive started giving me consistency errors in OS X.

Checked the seagate webpage w/ serials...

These'll all 3 be replaced under warranty NQA :rockout:

All I pay is shipping to them. :pimp:

edit: LOL I'm totally sending them back in western digital labeled anti-static bags :D

Uh not even close. :p

I'm using 2 different IDE->USB adaptors which are known working.

No IDE cable present ;)

These drives also checked out same symptoms in a desktop using IDE cables before I tested them.

Stange behavior though. I can't figure out whats making the squeaking.. maybe I'll take the cover off hdd 1 and run it and see if I can pinpoint it.

Does seagate rma oem drives?

I've heard the squeak on Seagate drives before, it doesn't seem to affect performance in any way but when I got one, I returned it and got another that didn't have the problem. I've noticed it is very common in the 320GB model, specifically the Chinese made vs Singapore ones which are like perfect. (I work at a computer store where we sell craploads of these every week...)

And yes Seagate RMAs OEM drives, and no opening it will not help you find it.

Skippy, be careful swapping HDD PCB's. Even with the same model size/no., IIRC, the "BIOS calibrations" of the drives done during manufacturing can result in different settings. Swapping PCB can make things worse as you apply the wrong drive calibrations to the wrong drive. You may have had only ONE bad drive, but by swapping PCBs you damaged the other.
