Internal SD card reader on laptop won't read 2GB card

My dad's got an Airis W15 laptop 1.86Ghz. I don't know the entire specs but it must be around 2 or 3 years old now.

Recently he purchased a 2GB card for his digital camera.

It works fine on the camera, and he can upload the pictures using an external card reader. But it just won't work when inserted directly in the laptop's slot.

Does that mean that the sd reader is just not equipped to read 2GB cards, or can he download firmware and make it function?

Yes, his old 512MB one works

Does he have drivers for it installed?
He must have since the 512MB one works - he wants me to find him a newer driver...

Does it show up in the device manager?
Yes

Does it in any way acknowledge that something has been inserted?
Yes and no, he told me when he clicks on 'My Computer' and inserts the card, the icon comes up under 'devices with removable storage' showing that there is a card, but when he double clicks on it to open it spends a long time to 'load' and finally he gets the message 'please insert card'.

See if it shows up in the removable devices manager (right click my cimputer click manage) as a removable drive... and see if you can format it.. perhaps its not fat32. :s

How old is the reader?

Try usb from camera->PC and see if it sees it. Windows I know shouldn't give you any troubles so if its an older card reader maybe perhaps its not able to read 2gb cards.

The date of manufacture of the laptop is 2004.

USB from camera works. He had checked it before.

I was hoping it was a driver issue and perhaps a newer driver would make it function. I've googled my eyes out searching for drivers. :banghead:

I gave him the instructions on how to do that, and he emailed me back saying

"It read C OK. D said that there is no media in it so it could not check it ,
and G: said it is unreadable"

The SD reader is his G drive. (C and D hard drive and dvdrom respectively)

Upgrade frimware? The device is probably like motherboards, sometimes need bios updates for newer hardware

You mean if its size is 2GB it is a HD SD Card?

I haven't even seen the card... let alone the packaging.
