Seems logical, but then what are they going to call it? Will it be a Titan card but aimed at the professional sector?
I bet it will be something like that other Titan recently done like Titan RTX 2 (Or similar) and it will be a similar card (Maybe have a few more cores unlocked if possible) and have better professional level performance with pro drivers available. That's just what I think based on what I am hearing, I mean originally Titan was supposed to be a Hybrid pro card and then it just morphed into the ultimate gamer card and I think they want to separate off a bit more so they can not confuse people as much in their lineups. It really to me is a good idea (Even if I think using 3090 is a bit weird just because X90 usually meant duel GPU) because it will clean up the naming and people can more easily view a box and think know the lineup by viewing the numbers and the Titan can sit in a separate category for those who need it and gamers who want the top can get a top end card filled with ram.

RTX 3090 is not Titan, rather a 3080 Ti.

Double precision at 1:4 rate in regard to single precision performance.

Exactly, look at the specs and block diagram and you have your answer. It should have been a 3080ti, but hey, you don't sell a 2x price tag with just two letters.

Hell... maybe even a 3080ti is giving it too much credit?

Here's the 780ti

And the 980ti

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
He basically said it's the new Titan.
I don't know if a Titan will come down the line later.... isnt this the biggest silicon they have? Can they software enable the extra compute bits for FP?

Previously in the video, they state the 3080 is the "flagship".

"Titan level performance" on the gaming side, isnt much different at all. This 3090 looks to be much faster than the 3080, no?

It's actually a bit depressing seeing places around the web celebrating the 'price cut' of the 3xxx series. They are just creating more tiers while shifting the names of their skus down the product stack and actually increasing the prices of more cut-down products. The jump in price of the 2xxx series helped to normalize this pricing structure where now we see a 3070 at the 500 mark and apparently it's a good deal because performance has increased compared the the sku with the same name of the previous generation. Gone are the days of a card with the same ending moniker (xx70) being replaced at the same price point with performance improvements. Without any competition this will likely continue.

Proportion wise, the amount that the 3080 is cut down places it in what, xx60 territory from a few generations ago?

600mm2 is 980Ti territory, but assuming they disabled 1/6 of the transistos or 100mm2 this is 580,780Ti,1080Ti,2080
300mm2 is 3060, that used to be 460,680,1080 territory

now with GA102 we have heavy cuts because there was another GA103 die that was canceled and something had to take its place,
GA103 is likely to be shrinked to 300mm2 on 5nm so we could once again see a 300mm2 80 card. 4080 that is.

When the competition has nothing in those tiers, aren't they actual new tiers by right? Its a new performance level, and even the old tiers surpass what we had before.

The 3080 is still based on a big chip, so in that sense, its not a change from, say, Kepler refresh at all. It actually got better, and note, that a 780ti was also priced 700 but it was very close in perf (10%?) to the 780 at 500. The x80 usually was reserved for a maxed out Gx104 die. Now the x80 is on a 102. You get more chip for more money. This is also true for the 1080 versus the 1080ti, the 980ti versus 980; while the 780 and 780ti played a similar game to Ampere now except the gap is much, much bigger today. Again both in price, and performance. And the peak price can exist because its the only card that can deliver that performance, which wasn't always the case with the cheaper past gen versions. What's new?

i think he just ment 3090 is the sort of performace you would normaly find in a Titan . but which class ? last gen or is it a hint of whats coming ?. or not coming ?.

They have stepped up to a 100/200 die before, so... and it was a really good one too. 980ti. You can see on the 3090 diagram that there is room for another block. Even if they cut a few bits out of that, they'll have another chunk of performance on tap.

i just feel like im going to buy the 3090 and the 3080ti with almost the exact specs will come out and we will then have a second titan xp type scenario. I want the best gpu from this round. I hate feeling like i could have buyers remorse shortly after due to nvidia holding back the release of the better card. They are most likely waiting for amd's latest outing as well .bigNavi and i hear there are two card coming from amd initially. Interesting times, I'll be jumping on a 3090 whatever the case this round.

I'm pretty sure Nvidia said last week that the 3090 occupies the same space in the hierarchy as the 2080Ti does today. He's just saying it will be Titan-level peformance, if we use current gen comparisons.

Except that the 2080 TI already offered better gaming performance than any Titan, and a 3090 will murder any Titan. It's not Titan-like performance, it's more like double Titan performance.

Did you like the price of the RTX20xx series cards? Because the 30xx cards are much lower..
Oh God no. But that's what I was saying. That price increase for the 2xxx series makes it seem like these upcoming prices are amazing in comparison but still, $500 for a xx70

I find how they buried the Titan V in the bechmarks when turing came out interesting. Volta was simply not included.
If i were to water cool my Titan V i can get 1200mhz performance up from 1890mhz on air. With a 400mhz extra boost to the gpu just from cooling. The volta card then surpasses the 2080ti in every way as is proven by 3dmark leaders all using Volta cards. I think 4th place had a 2080ti though. its a while since i looked.
I am almost tempted to keep the titan v and water cool it as a fun project for you tube. even though gamers nexus already did it. They had a lot of fun with it. :toast:

Then wait to make your purchase.
I find how they buried the Titan V in the bechmarks when turing came out interesting. Volta was simply not included.
That is because the Titan V was specifically designed for industrial, scientific and research use case scenarios. It was NOT intended to do anything gaming related.
but still, $500 for a xx70
Ok, but look at the GTX 1070/1070ti prices. About the same range and those prices were considered very reasonable and fair for what was on offer. NVidia has returned to that pricing scheme because they know they will sell cards like crazy. They also know that AMD has their new hotness in the GPU arena coming soon and they believe that the new Radeons will compete very well.

Except that the 2080 TI already offered better gaming performance than any Titan
The is incorrect. It does not. The RTX Titan handily out performs the 2080ti by a solid margin. Additionally, in non-RTRT gaming scenarios the Pascal based Titan holds it's ground against the 2080ti and nearly everyone's benchmarks prove it.

I always thought of the Titan was the bridge between Pro series cards and Gaming Series cards ... if you needed to render, you installed a Quadro ... if you wanted to game you bought a GTX / RTX . If you wanted to do both in one box, you bought a Titan. In my industry. if you wanted to build 2D / 3D AutoCAD workstation (Vector Graphics) your bought GTX / RTX because Quadro was slower .... If you wanted to render those drawings you bought Quadro cause it was faster. So an office w/ 10 workstations, might have 1 rendering and 9 CAD boxes. If you wanted to take work home, do both and play some games, you bought a Quadro.

A cat doesn't become a dog just because you call it "dog"

What software are you using that could render faster with a Quadro??? Anything CUDA related will get destroyed by GeForce RTX for cost - I use Maya with Redshift for GPU rendering.

2 x 2080 Supers with nvLink have twice the compute speed of a Quadro RTX 5000, offer the same 16GB VRAM, but still cost less... basically since the RTX 2000 series GeForce cards have not been designed solely for games despite 95% of gamers thinking that lol. In fact nVidia has recently discontinued the Quadro brand, their new A series cards starting at 48GB VRAM will be more oriented towards custom scientific compute tasks.

nVidia wouldn't have introduced technologies to GeForce like nvLink and 10 bit OpenGL color if they didn't plan for GeForce to take over the mainstream workstation market like it has. Also make no mistake, 16GB and 20GB variants of the 3070 & 3080 respectively are coming soon which will satisfy prosumer demands for more VRAM now that nvLink has been removed from the 3080. I haven't heard anything on a 3090 variant, I doubt it will happen... it already annihilates the Titan RTX in performance and is excellent value.

They technically could push a completely uncut die and call it a Titan. There still is some small parts disabled on the 3090. I would not bet on it though. I think that's their "super reserve" and they won't use it unless challenged.

Anything CUDA related will get destroyed by GeForce RTX for cost

Not anything using double precision.

Well it won’t get the Titan Studio drivers so it will only ever be a half assed version whether it’s intended or not.

Titan Ampere maybe? Well NO.
Nvidia would have released that first. Watch people buy it and then (arrow to the knee) release the 3090 at 40% less the price.
I just wonder with the new rumor's will they release a 3080/3090 Super six months down the line.

@Devon68 6months is a lot considering them trying to get all the headlines. It's a third in 18 months , the "de facto" between gpu Arch's . Not saying hopefully nextNavi is competitive so that MSRP prices get a markdown across the duopoly (so far) , but it would be welcomed.

I guess it will depend on how well the new AMD cards perform after they release. If AMD will have a gpu that can match a 3080 in performance for a little bit less, I'm sure nvidia has an Ace up their sleeve.

EDIT: Reading upon the title of the tread made me look up the older titans prices and performance. Seeing a 1660 super edge out a titan X is not pleasant. Price wise I might pick one up when it drops below 100$ just for memorabilia or if I can get a broken one. Really love the way the founders editions look with the blower design.

I was using 4 Titan Vs (I've moved my 1x 32GB Titan CEO ed and the othre 3x Titans to my wife's pc, because it was my prior build and she gets the hand-me-downs).

So I'm now using 2x 3090 rtx in SLI, as I do both research and games, I believe this setup to be in the same class as Titan

I'm guessing the 3090 is just a rebranded, cheaper titan. It seems NVIDIA is trying to rename their super high end product stack with them not using the Quadro branding anymore. Though I could be proven wrong in the coming months
