Is it because they are woke-infected and feel they have to tow the PC line? Whatever their reasons, I find it bizarre that my Steam profile has been censored with those beloved little love hearts.
A few years ago I set my profile name a The Crazy Gringo, for no particular reason and the other day I discovered that the name cannot now be displayed.
I couldn't really give a monkey's what my Steam profile name is, to be honest, but I'm not comfortable with censorship in any form, especially with zero explanation - I submitted a Steam ticket which probably ended up in the ticket black hole.
How can the word Gringo possibly be offensive? Except of course to Gringos, But then, south of the border, I am a Gringo, so the laugh's on them because I am now like Prince - The Player Formerly Known As The Crazy Gringo - TPFKACG for short.

Gringo is a derogatory term in the vast majority of places, especially in the US, where Valve is based. It's not Steam bending over to woke culture, it's Valve trying to make people not be assholes on their platform. I personally don't care either way, but either it all goes or nothing goes. And I'd rather they not allow the N-word, so yeah, nothing goes.

And as @Assimilator says, it's Valve's platform, not yours, so you can either stop using it or stop complaining.

Well, the US is. Shame they're in control of practically every platform out there but it is what it is.

Remember that free speech doesn't exist, censorship never went away, it just got more tolerable.

Never knew "gringo" is offensive. Or that those hearts in the name were censoring words. But this is the world we live in. Big-tech is left leaning so that is the future.

No, it isn't. Or more accurately, it's not insulting to anyone who in not thin-skinned and has feelings stronger than a wet paper bag.

It's not Steam bending over to woke culture
Yes it is...
it's Valve trying to make people not be assholes on their platform.
...but it's this too.

And as @Assimilator says, it's Valve's platform, not yours, so you can either stop using it or stop complaining.
Ah, but there's a catch, we're PAYING customers not guests. We have rights and one of those rights is to choose whatever account name that suits us and does not contain vulgarities. "Gringo" is not a vulgarity.

This is an example of Valve virtue-signaling, nothing more.

It's a derogatory term that will offend someone. It's entirely understandable and if you don't like it you can leave Steam. Nobody's forcing you to use their platform under their terms and conditions.

As for "how offensive does a derogatory term need to be before it's unacceptable?" That depends person to person, but for a corporation like Valve, just censoring ALL derogatory terms is the safe option.

I bet the word "brick" is offensive to some people as well because someone they knew got killed by brick falling on their head.

What a dumb way to think about this sort of stuff.

How many people need to think "brick" is a bad word before it is considered one ?
Nobody's forcing you to use their platform under their terms and conditions.
The same could be said about the persons being offended. Divisive isn't it ? The idea is to control and to dictate not to include.

Remember that free speech doesn't exist, censorship never went away, it just got more tolerable.

I'm really tired of this nonsensical whining being repeated every time the topic of free speech comes up. There is no such thing as absolutely free speech except in an absolute anarchy, and that's hardly a society you'd like to live in now is it? In modern society, we balance freedom of speech against the consequences of that freedom. That balance is not censorship, no matter how much you'd like to claim it is.

The idea is to control and to dictate not to include.

No, the idea is to include people who find the term in question to be offensive.

Wow! Some holier than thou attitudes here, that's for sure.
As I pointed out in my original post, I really couldn't care less about my profile name, but I do care about creeping censorship simply for the sake of it.
I also mentioned that I live in a foreign, Spanish speaking country, where I am often referred to as a Gringo and it doesn't bother me one iota. In fact, since I'm a Brit, Gringo is the wrong term anyway. That's usually reserved for Americans who are also referred to as Yankees. Is that word going to be banned as well?
I have never met anyone who has been offended by being called a Gringo and as for having to deal with Valve's policies, that's a big no-no because I continue to question them on several other matters.

Raising a legit question about censorship is now termed as complaining is it? If we all took that attitude, we might just as well give up, grovel and let the system walk all over us without question.

I just changed my profile name to The Crazy Brit, so let's see if Brit is offensive to Valve's sensibilities or anyone else for that matter.

Unlike "brick", Gringo, Kraut, Limey, etc are derogatory. What makes those terms derogatory rather than endearing is history - something neither you nor I have control over.

I don't personally think Gringo is offensive - I treat it as slang rather than derogatory but because that seems to be its common modern use but it is literally a derogatory term, so it's being covered by the derogatory term censorship. What's so hard to understand about that?

What's so hard to understand about that?

That you could never make a coherent argument for gringo being offensive and brick not ,because it would have to come down to "More people are offended by X rather than Y so that one must be worse and therefore only that one gets the status of being actually offensive". Thus not caring about what those other people find offensive.

You either think gringo and brick are both offensive or you think neither are. Otherwise you are biased, which is quite offensive. Shitty, right ?

Yes, and that's not a bad thing in the case of a private platform.

There's a lot that's hard to understand about that.
For example, who dictates what's offensive and what isn't? A committee?
I'll have to ask a German if he finds Kraut offensive and as for Limey, isn't that what Americans called Brits back in the day? If that's the case, I'm not in slightest bit offended.

Limey:
A word Americans use to describe an English or British person. Comes from when British sailors used to eat limes to avoid scurvy.

The origins of Gringo are thus:
Contrary to some things that have been posted here, the US did not wear green coats, or green uniforms, during the Mexican American War, so that explanation for the origin of this word is bogus.

But the term is indeed related to American soldiers who invaded Mexico during the Mexican-American war. It actually came from the lines of what was then a song that was very popular with American infantrymen.

See the example.
A popular American song during that time--one sung by many American troops as they marched--contained the repeated refrain:

"Oh, the ash and the oak and the willow tree,
And green grows the grass on the infantry"

Being members of the infantry, the second line was sung with particular fervor. "Green grows" sounded like "gringoes" to the non-English-speaking Mexicans, so they used that term to refer to all of the American soldiers.

Let me break this down to you slowly:

1. There are people besides you who use Steam
2. Some of those people (more than one) find the term offensive
3. Democracy is a numbers game

Your singular experience of not finding this term offensive doesn't invalidate the experience of those who do. Get over yourself and stop making this about your hurt feelings, because it's not about you, or your faux tears of outrage, or false cries of censorship.

Raising a legit question about censorship is now termed as complaining is it?

This is not a "legit question" in any way shape or form, because there's no censorship involved here. Valve owns Steam and as such, Valve gets to decide what is acceptable on their platform or not. You being a snowflake doesn't change that they get to make the rules, so complaining about said rules is not going to achieve anything. If you're really so mortally offended by the "censorship" of a single word, find a different gaming platform.

Ironically, it is/was the name for this military exercise

Gringo-Gaucho are a contingent set of maneuvers performed between the Argentine Naval Aviation and United States Navy's aircraft carriers. The US Navy refers to them as Southern Seas in their last edition. Gringo and Gaucho are linguistic and folkloric designations of long standing, respectively.

@Splinterdog I'd not get too upset about this. It's not worth it... and to be fair, although this may be just me and my specific social context, we do have a tendency in Argentina to use so-called derogatory terms more frequently without a care in the world and without intention to harm/bother anyone, which works fine for our context, since nearly everyone knows what we mean and what we don't mean with those words, but it simply doesn't translate well outside of it in some cases. Steam may be going overboard, but it's par for the course when handling a platform of such reach.

Thank you for your sanity.

There are phrases that I use in speaking to friends and coworkers, that are part of the common dialect here, that would be "censored" on Steam. But I'm smart enough to know that, and not try to use them there. And not to complain about "censorship" when I do use one by accident and get rapped over the knuckles for it.

This is not censorship, it's a reminder that other peoples and cultures see the world differently and react to things differently. All it takes is a little bit of compassion and empathy, and considering them rather than yourself.

What a pompous attitude you have and clearly have no interest is reading into the nuances of any of my posts, where I have made it as clear as daylight that I am not hurt in any way, but I abhor censorship in any form.
And as for describing me as a snowflake, I'm actually falling off my chair in mirth at that accusation because in fact, I'm quite the opposite.
We all have the right to stand up against unwarranted censorship and if we didn't, the world would be a much sadder and more fearful place.

You're completely missing the point.

Gringo is literally classified as a "derogatory/offensive term" in dictionaries and encyclopedias.
Brick is not.

If you want to argue about english, etymology, language specifics, start with a dictionary and argue with those who compile the dictionary; If you don't like it, your beef is with them, not me. I'm just telling you how it is.

Your 'brick' argument is dumb because it's not addressing the subject matter which is derogatory terms.

Ironically, it is/was the name for this military exercise

@Splinterdog I'd not get too upset about this. It's not worth it... and to be fair, although this may be just me and my specific social context, we do have a tendency in Argentina to use so-called derogatory terms more frequently without a care in the world and without intention to harm/bother anyone, which works fine for our context, since nearly everyone knows what we mean and what we don't mean with those words, but it simply doesn't translate well outside of it in some cases. Steam may be going overboard, but it's par for the course when handling a platform of such reach.
I completely take your point @windwhirl
There are many phrases and words in Argentine Castellano that are thrown about with gay abandon, but very few people take offence at those words. It's a very colourful language too and of course, context is imperative.

Do you consider Steam blocking out a six-letter word that begins with n, ends with r, and is used to derogatively refer to black people as "censorship"?

If not, why do you consider the blocking of the word in this question's title to be censorship?

I've not read this thread. It'll just annoy me.

Is it full of entitlement? Full of rants that say I can be called anything I want? Well, you can't. I vehemently disagree with 'woke' culture. I also disagree with 'I can insult anybody I want' freedom of speech nonsense.

FTR, any private company has every right to disallow names it feels may be 'insensitive'. Whether they are to you or not, is not important.

What is important, is that people get upset because they can't be called...

I bet the word "brick" is offensive to some people as well because someone they knew got killed by brick falling on their head.

What a dumb way to think about this sort of stuff.

It's not a dumb way. It's about how the word is used and how many people are offended. If someone takes offense at the word "brick", that person is probably alone in that and it's that persons problem. But say if the common name for ameritards is "fuckface" and you see it all over the place and people actively use it as an pejorative of an entire group of people ... wouldn't that offense an ameritard? And words and their meanings change, which is just a thing.

I have no idea or specific stance on gringo, but taking other *whole nations of people* into account when living is usually a good thing.
