Hey hey. As the title states. I'm planning to upgrade from my 2060 to a 2080/S/Ti while staying with my 7700K for now.
I'm also planning to delid the 7700K and push it to 5 or 5.1 GHz. Will I experience a major bottleneck from the CPU?

Note: I play all of my games in either 1080p or lower, yet, some newer games still use up 100% of the GPU while being on those lower resolutions + settings.

I'll gladly hear back from everyone. Thanks in advance.

Your 7700K@5GHz will be a little faster than the i3-10300. So there will be a little bottleneck, but not a major one. It's kind of a waste of a high end GPU to get a 2080/Ti and only play at 1080 or below.

The 2080ti is overkill for 1080.

If it were me, the highest I would go on 1080p is a 2070. Maybe a 2070S if you are indeed doing extremely high refresh rates on that monitor. Honestly, if you want to upgrade the GPU further, go to a higher resolution. Also the 7700k will be less of an issue at a higher resolution.

7700k and rtx 2070 super owner here. Delid, delid and delid push that cpu to 5.0ghz it took me too long for doing it. Ive seen the bottleneck in games like BFV with DX11,In AC Odyssey even though I see my gpu hitting 99%usage the cpu goes in some zones to 98%~100%. Rtx 2080ti at 1080 will create a worst case scenario for you imo. I know that depends on the game too but rtx 2080 TI is too much for 1080p. 1440p monitors are pretty cheap now if you can, no idea how much youre paying for that 2080ti in diff with the 2080 super. Grab the difference and buy a 1440p monitor and the rtx 2080 super.

I'm also planning to delid the 7700K and push it to 5 or 5.1 GHz.

Likely a waste of time if you're intending to remove any potential bottleneck.

a quadcore at 1080p (OR BELOW) with a 2080 Ti?

Okay..

i just bought a 10900k because my 10600k and 9900k was sometimes pinned at 100% load at 1440p with my 3080. (BFV,R6)

Thanks for all the replies on this so far, this will give me an overall idea on what to do.

Likely a waste of time if you're intending to remove any potential bottleneck.
Regarding this: Me delidding the 7700K will just be another temporary workaround until I get a new CPU in December.

I'm planning to do a 2-way upgrade over the next 2 months. Was thinking about GPU first and then CPU.

yerp your gonna have a bottle neck but i could live with it. have you tryed your 7700k at 5ghz ? most can do it without deliding my 7700k will do 5.1ghz with water cooling.

Haven't been able to push my 7700K to 5GHz without delidding and I already use a 280mm AiO. 4,8 was the max I was able to get without hitting 90C while putting any load on it, hence why I want to delid it.

sorry to here that bud, its the luck of the draw, ive left the vcore on auto and just put the multy to 50 and let it do its thing its only when going to 5.1 i have to man the voltage so i just leave it at 5ghz my temps at 5ghz is around 80c when benchmarking or stress testing.

I'll just look into it and hopefully get good temps when delidding and putting liquid metal on it. I assume I will be able to comfortably hit 5 or even 5.1 with my current cooling situation when doing that.

Ended up getting a 3070 during the launch, and I'm definitely CPU bottlenecked at this point. But I'll be getting a Ryzen 5000 CPU next month.

Your 7700K@5GHz will be a little faster than the i3-10300. So there will be a little bottleneck, but not a major one. It's kind of a waste of a high end GPU to get a 2080/Ti and only play at 1080 or below.

At first I thought this was a necro'd thread from 2018 or something but no its really 2020.

Any 4 core CPU will struggle nowadays with anything in the range of a 2080S or faster. The 2080ti is notably faster. Some games may even struggle from 1080 ~ 1080ti performance and up, because they don't use HT but do like 4+ cores. They're not all over the place - but they exist and you will notice it. Note: the issue with insufficient core count won't go away if you move up in resolution.

Another big one is resolution, as mentioned, but that is a luxury problem. Your system and monitor as it is now, is not balanced, heavily tipping over on the GPU side.

Not a bottleneck, thats throttling back
CPU bottleneck is more relevant at 1080P or below.
You can call it as you wish. But it still is a bottleneck.

Why would you delid it if you are going to change it in a month? Deliding it will make it worth less in my eyes.

maybe invest in a new monitor (higher res and refresh rates) :)
