Right now two of my 3 PCs are using a 5700xt and a 2070 super.
I’m very satisfied by the 2070S but I had a lot of issues with the 5700XT mostly because of the awful drivers (now tbh the situation is much improved). To sum it up I’d like to upgrade both the cards with two 3070 , move the 2070 Super to my third rig (now it is using a 1660) and sell the 5700XT.
I was very happy about the pricing (much less about the fake launch) but the first reviews were... underwhelming.
The performance level is quite right: 2080Ti is the intended target. But Nvidia played dirty about memory. Just 8 Gb of VRAM and just 14 Gbps is ridiculous in such an high end VGA.
I’m having second thoughts and I’m debated about buying one. Maybe a 6800 is a better choice (but those drivers ... :shadedshu: )

8GB of VRAM are enough for every existing game with maxed out settings and 4K.
just because it is allocated does not mean it is utilized and so hard limited that you get problems.

my 3070 runs fine in every single game without any problem whatsoever.

Never understood people complaining about the drivers for AMD cards. Never had one. Anyway, if you are disappointment with the 3070 simply don't buy it. You still have good systems so why even bother? Maybe wait for next gen graphics?

Hmm.. This is what I see in your system specs:

He may have both. Of the two, the 3080 was significantly harder to get.

What about the GPU itself though?

What about it? The reviews are mostly here down TPU showing what you see.

My bad, didn't clarify enough. I meant @bonehead123 opinion on the GPU product itself. Not the product launch debacle. What about you @X71200 ?
I'm asking this as I really am curious on everyone's opinion/review on Ampere.

Well I'm not looking extremely forward towards the GPUs after some of the recent news posted here about AMD's offerings. But hey, maybe it's good that scalpers got the shaft again (remember faulty A1 revision 2080 Ti memory).

This.

Things look rosy either way with my 1080 being bought at 500. I can now sell it for just under half, invest 300 and double my performance with RT bonus points. Good times. Navi is a similar jump.

GPU upgrades are all about timing and getting that finger off the trigger, not on it. A good deal just pops up. If you need to look for it, you're doing it wrong.

I apologize, I know next to nothing about Radeon with the exception of Radeon VII & the GPU inside consoles. It's not bias or anything... I think... It's just that I have never been interested in the red team for no apparent reason at all...

For the vast majority of tasks a GPU is just very much the same whatever brand you pick. The devil is in the details. You'll get over the minor differences. If stability is in good order and performance is there, don't even worry. I understand the feeling though, was in the same place myself but having seen a vast range of GPUs (and owned a not so vast range), honestly... get what's best for the money.

I'd put more effort into finding the best AIB version of the card you want, than worry about red or green - that is today, because now the feature set is virtually the same - at last.

That Gaming X 1080 will be a hard sell at the numbers you're thinking, but I don't know where you live. I sold couple of those for rather similar numbers years ago.

The reviews from TPU should settle the deal soon enough on AMD.

Ya think? You had me curious... look.

I'll sell it at 225-250 - depending on luck.

Doesn't mean people buy them. Your point is extremely irrelevant when there are better new cards for cheaper.

No need to get into a discussion about it - this is a tried and tested formula that so far has always worked out for me. No worries mate ;)

A 2060 starts at around 300 EUR right now.

Even if some person bought your old card at some price, by the time that would have happened, you'll might be left without a card and seeing the stock levels today - you might not even get the card you wanted. Your formula is not perfect.

Also noticed that you gave the 2060 example, that's literally the worst card to buy in the mid range as far as price and performance is concerned.

actually there are quite a lot of people frantically looking for a Series 30 card...

8GB of VRAM are enough for every existing game with maxed out settings and 4K.
just because it is allocated does not mean it is utilized and so hard limited that you get problems.

my 3070 runs fine in every single game without any problem whatsoever.
well, AMD seems to have another opinion, since they used 16 gb even on the cheaper model.
And even Nvidia used more than 8 gb on 2080ti, before cheaping out on the 3070.
Not to speak about the terrible 14 Gbps speed...

If you upgrade every single generation, you will always be disappointed. Upgrade every 2 generations instead.
that wasn't the point.
Performance wise the upgrade still is good.
But the VRAM choice is just ridiculous.

My opinion is Nvidia underrated AMD proposal and tried to cheap out to the maximum on 3070.
Maybe they were also thinking about a 6 Gb 3060 at this point...

well, AMD seems to have another opinion, since they used 16 gb even on the cheaper model.
And even Nvidia used more than 8 gb on 2080ti, before cheaping out on the 3070.
Not to speak about the terrible 14 Gbps speed...

There are several reasons that AMD uses more memory. The obvious one is marketing. But beside the marketing aspect, there is also the fact that their cards need higher memory bandwidths to match nVidia's performance. This means larger memory busses, which requires higher memory amounts. It's been this way for several generations. NVidia is just better at memory bandwidth optimization, their lossless memory compression plays a big part of that. At the end of the day, it comes down to performance, and the 3070 obviously performs wonderfully with 8GB of RAM and the memory bandwidth it has. The memory choice suites the card when you look at nVidia's architecture and their extremely good lossless memory compression algorithm.

Benchmark Scores They're pretty good, nothing crazy.
6800 seems to be a better choice, or the 3070ti if you want to wait for it and want the drivers.

not even considering if there are driver or bios hacks to get 6800 to 6800XT performance, which is very likely.

It seems like nvidia released the 3000 series thinking that the 6800XT was going to be slightly slower than the 2080ti; but now the whole 3K product stack looks pretty meh for the $$ especially the 3090 and 3070.
