Unwanted HD Wipe.

My son has a Ryzen 5 3400G, 16 gig Ram, EVGA GTX 1660. 250GD SD Card has windows on it .
The only thins on it are a few Steam games and World Community Grid, CCCleaner, Driver Booster 8. Google Chrome.

He says it was running fine, but when we got home from running errands it had ran a fresh windows install. Everything is gone, wcg, games, steam, it looks like the day we turned it on.

How can it do that without going into windows and doing a fresh install?
Any way to check and see what happened?

Not sure what would cause that, almost like something triggered a factory reset. Tho I can say I don't trust driver booster 8.

Check the event viewer log

Drive booster and CCCleaner are symptoms of someone that is messing with settings. Probably did a restore

Windows 10 has an option similar to "Reset to Factory Defaults", just like on your phone or tablet. It's accessible through recovery boot menu, or through windows settings, and it does not need an installation media to do a full wipe while keeping the virgin OS. The only problem, is that in both cases it requires user intervention (e.g lots of clicking "Yes" and "Confirm").

Not really. The way system reset works, there is no way to see what happened before wipe, or any way to recover files. The whole process takes a couple of hours, so I assume it deletes stuff permanently for safety reasons. If your kid didn't do it, and you didn't do it, it might be possible someone had RDP access to this machine and played an evil prank?

My son is 12 he has no idea how to do a system restore. Can you schedule a fresh windows install like you can for system updates and have it run by itself?

You can reset windows without doing a fresh install, recovery or anything like that. It's called "Reset this PC" or something like that, you can find it by typing in the search bar, it's very easy to do actually.

Dude, you really underestimate 12y.o. kids. Pretty sure that a couple of clicks to get to recovery menu is well within his capabilities.
I've seen weirder things, like 8y.o. rascals wiping their tablet by accident through android bootloader

, or like in case of our janitor's older kid, locking out her smart TV in demo mode :laugh:

Yeah with the constant writes W10 does in the background an SD card wouldn't last more than a month before breaking. These things are meant for pictures/video, not OS'. They have extremely limited write capabilities. The only OS' that can use SD cards are ones that are WORMs (write once, read many), as in keep all config data then put the OS in RAM (like unRAID or VMWare). The SD card in that aspect is written to once when it's built, and subsequently only when a config is changed. At system boot there's a RAMdisk created and the OS is copied into there. The rest of the reads & writes are done in RAM. So you write the OS once, then copy it into RAM on every boot. This works great for small OS' that can fit in a couple gigabytes - but for Windows 10 and its required tens of gigabytes, not so much. Unless you're okay with a fresh OS on every boot and wasting tens of gigabytes of RAM. Anyway, let's move on from that tangent...

OP definitely meant SSD, since I'm pretty sure W10 won't even recognize an SD card as a valid install media.

I meant to say SSD, and he was playing Rust when I went to his room to get him. He showed me the base he was building. He left the game running and the PC on.
We went to town and when we got home a few hours later he went to his room to play and came out to tell me something happened to his PC.
I went and looked and It had restarted and down in the right corner it said system restore complete.

Windows doesn't just reset by itself. Sounds like your kid got suckered into "do this for more fps" from someone he's playing with.

I can verify that this can happen. Sadly, some adults target kids (because kids are annoying as they claim) and give them these "pranks" while recording the whole thing in youtube or Twitch. Also bow, it is possible that your kid knows it could be because of what he did but he might be afraid to admit it and then he returned to you, hoping that you could bring his things back.

As far back as w3.1 thru my current W10Pro, I have left computers running for days/weeks/months at a time and have neva, eva, neva had one restart and definitely not reset itself without some type of user interaction...

Either he clicked on something to make it happen, or someone remoted/hacked into his machine and did it from afar...

I wouldn't use driver booster, other than that it sounds like your child has been tricked into doing this. Possibly told to open up command prompt and type the reinstall command.

hmm after reading that he was actively in a game and then the pc being reset by the time you got home, its almost like you were a victim of some sorta of remote tech support scam where they reset the pc or something out of frustration for now paying or something.

so long as it was only games... at least nothing too important was lost. many games save in the cloud now too as far as progress
