Hi Everyone!

I currently have an EVGA Supernova 550W G2 and I am upgrading my CPU to either a Ryzen 3700X or 3900/50X (I haven't decided,) overclocked. I also use a Radeon RX 580 graphics card and plan to upgrade that down the road to a GTX 3070, which will be moderately overclocked.

I haven't overclocked in a while and I believe my calculations are off. I am trying to gauge the max TDP of an overclocked 3700X with a moderately OC'd GPU. I believe a 500W should suffice. Any advice from experienced overclockers is welcome!

What are you using the processor for. If its for gaming only, the 3700x is more than enough vs 3900x or 3950x.
If its for working stuff, the more cores might work, depending on the work you're doing.

Your 550w G2 Evga is quality psu it should be alright. You are unlikely to max the power supply in gaming and normal use. The only time it would trip the power limit is if you were run prime95 and furmark at the same time. Otherwise normal use your rig would draw about 400w on average.

I used a Ryzen 1700 overclock, an old Gtx 780 and an Rx460 back then for mining on an Evga bronze 500w. It never trip despite using 100 percent cpu and gpu.

Overclock does lower efficiency alot though. Otherwise 3900x is fairly power efficient. I am using it now in laptop which rather outlier with 200w psu.

You cant really compare using the 3900x in a laptop thats derated to 65w from the normal rating of 105w.
That 3900w in your laptop is derated to 65w only.

Yeah that why I said it rather an outlier. Just wanted to say that Renoir Cpu really rather power efficient out the box even if it not derated at 105w. Overclocking though would massively reduce the power efficiency though from my experience and it gets obvious when all cores are used.

But really depends on what the OP will be using the processor for. Gaming with streaming, 3900x would be good, only gaming stick with 3700x and use the extra money on a faster gpu/bigger SSD.

I have 1800X and RTX2060/6g. I measured power consumption abaut two weeks ago, running furmark and prime95 simultaneously. 403W Max, my psu is BeQuiet 500W sfx-l. Just a pointer.

If you overclock, at least If I were in your shoes, i'd borrow a bigger psu and measure power usage before buying new psu, as i have no idea how much power is needed when overclocking.

Overclocking uses more power than you think, so it doesnt hurt to have a bit of headroom when it comes to selecting a PSU. The 580 without overclocking is around 200watts.

You will likely be just fine with either CPU you listed. 550W is cutting it close if you overclock the cpu and gpu and stress test them both simultaneously. I wouldnt be surprised if you hit 400-450W during that (PS, don't run furmark.... ever. I saw that software mentioned twice in this thread...scary). During gaming and other activities, it will be less...maybe 400W at most. 3u5W-425W on a 550W unit is perfect to me. The worst that can happen is fan noise...but these units are quiet. I run a 3080 and 10980xe with the latter overclocked on a 750W psu. First time I've seen (nkt heard) the fan spin up on my evga 750w g3. People said i don't have enough power, lol. I pull 550W at the wall during gaming. ;)

My 3900X at 1.15vcore and two 1080 Ti's in the system pull about 550w with the GPUs turned down a little on the power. With the 3900X crunching away as it does every single day, I can see the watt meter on it now reading about 200w.

I agree with @EarthDog, 550w might be close to the nose if everything is on full tilt and if your pushing the system, but a decent unit will deliver sometimes a little past what it's says on the tin :) I know a review of the original Corsair AX1200 units (just as an example) was able to pull over 1600w before shutting down and then it just simply turned back on again. Decent PSUs are always a absolute must unless your using something in the office. Something then doesn't need to be Gold/Plat/Titanium rated :) It might help with the power bills but not 100% needed as it'll never be under a massive load or have massively powerful kit to pull the power :) Horses for courses :)

Just don't use it!! Bit like using XTU as well, will kill the CPU if you run it a lot.

What's the point in using Furmark anyways??

I have no idea what XTU is.
(Insert meme here) :D:D

I just wanted to know how much power the gpu wants, ran it like 5 minutes or so. Is there a better alternative to load gpu?

Furmark is a power virus, not a "benchmark".

XTU is a little like Furmark, created by Intel to show off their CPUs where 20% faster only because it used a particular instruction set which obviously pushed the scores up... I ran a i3 6320, it killed it. Stock volts as well... So no, just don't use it either...

Well if you want to know how much power the GPU uses, load up another benchmark, 3D Mark, Heaven, Super Position, Catzilla... Heck, even a game would do! :) Plenty to choose from...

Furmark was called a "power virus" by both amd and nvidia who in their review materials, specifically suggest not to use it. Aside from that, if you notice on Nvidia cards, it will drop the clocks speeds SIGNIFICANTLY in order to stay under the power limit of the card. A couple hundred mhz. So while it may be getting 'hot', it isnt testing much of anything.

If you want a good gpu test, loop 3dmark fire strike extreme, unigine superposition, etc.

As far as intel xtu.... there are no issues running that application on your cpu. One person's anecdote does not make a rule (does anyone think intel would make a utility that kills their chips?). It's no harder than most out there. It was designed to be a stress test/dashboard for the cpu, not to show anything off (yes, it does have a benchmark component, but that wasn't ever its main purpose).
