Choices for AMD CPU's

I have the opportunity to purchase the following Three processors:

Ryzen 9 3900X $399
Ryzen 9 3900 XT $419
Ryzen 7 5800X $449

The 3900x and XT both out perform the 5800 in multi core. The 5800X out scores the 3900 x and XT by approximately 20%

I wanted the 5900X, but availability is scarce. I reserved an MSI X570 Tomahawk motherboard and it has finally become available. Given the 3 CPU's...which would anyone recommend. Light gamer, Adobe Photoshop, Heavy MS Office...some Adobe Premiere and some video encoding...pretty balanced use

your use isnt balanced, its heavily into multi threaded - so 5800x it is.

Make sure you get a decent cooler with it, they run hot due to density despite not consuming a lot of wattage.

I already have a 280mm AIO to cool it. EVGA CLC 280 which the software has been updated to work properly with Zen3

The 3900X seems to beat the 5800X pretty handily in Cinebench and other Premiere, Photoshop and more. The only advantage the 5800X has is gaming...where it is in the same class as 5900X and 5950X.

I think Adobe works better with stronger cores and does not scale all that well into 12 cores. Therefore I think the 5800X would serve you better. 3900X is meant for different software.

5800X no doubt, many of those programs tend to favor lower core count and higher ips/clockspeed just like games

Unless you get a heavy discount I would not buy 3000 series

I'd also recommend the 5800X. Of the three, it's the best one for gaming. It also has the highest IPC and clock, which really matter in lightly threaded apps. For Adobe software, you won't see that much of improvement when you go over 8 physical cores. Straight from the horse's mouth:

5800x I went from a 3600 and have a 2920X based TR4 system. Even with less cores the 5800X should feel faster and give you better performance in some applications than the 3900X. I updated my Gaming rig to a 5600x from a 3600 and I can tell you it feels really nice seeing 4.7 GHZ across all cores with an idle temp of 31 C @ 1.3 volts means that my 5600x is in some (most cases) faster than my 2920X. For some reason Horizon Zero Dawn loads much faster on my TR4 system though.

5000 series is the only thing you should consider. This series closed to gap with Intel. 3000 series did not.

1000 and 2000 series Ryzen are far behind both tho.

Difference in games between my 3800x and 5950x was zero, so unless SMART memory bring something big and realy exclusive in 2021. I would take the 3900 or XT if its close on sale

In high fps / CPU bound gaming the 5000 series easily pull ahead

People using 120-360 Hz will notice the difference instantly

At 4K and above? No shit you will be GPU bound ... 1440p at 144-240 Hz is a big thing and you can EASILY be CPU bound here, Ryzen 5000 beats 3000 series easily here

So my last question. Is it a big enough jump from my i7 7820X clocked at 4.6 all core? I get around 480 single core Cinebench r20 and 4750 multicore. 12,570 in Cinebench r23 multicore...

I get the overall improvement of 14nm to 7. PCie 4.0 and such. As always...I just wonder what might be coming down the pike in the "near" future. Not much hope for Intel...that's for sure...

Actually...think I really want to wait for 5900X availability. I always thought that jumping from 8 core to 12 core made the most sense. I definitely intend to bail on Intel...

if the biggest percentage increase and performance gain over what you have currently is what you are after then it's kinda a no brainer to go with the 5800X. That being said i don't think you can go wrong with either, they will both do what you need them to do and do it well so why not save 50$ and the extra wait?

Oh i did for sure, i went from ~110FPS to 165 in just about every single damn title. I thought i needed a GPU upgrade but nope, purely CPU. These things are *Fast*

edit: to clarify i went from around 110 average to flatlining 165 (Gsync/Vsync capped) in the games i play. (4.3GHz 3800x -> 5800x stock)

I have 32 GB of GSkill DDR-4 (Ripjaws 5 / CL15). The motherboard I want is the MSI X570 Tomahawk...and hopefully, the ram will work on that board with Zen 3. Hopefully AMD's equivalent of XMP will be able to recognize it...

3900xt since it's a better bin, even if only slightly over the regular 3900x, with the latter you may hit silicon lottery & get at or close to 3900xt clocks. But with the 3900xt you're getting that guarantee, possibly with a much lower power consumption than the non xt variant.
