This may seems like a surprise to many gloomers, Nvidia actually did produce a lot of 3080 and they were instantly sold out.

Steam currently has around 100 millions active users base, so 0.23% mean around 230k people are playing with their shiny 3080. If this trend continue, 3080 will become the most popular high end GPU ever to release, replacing the venerable 1080 Ti

Yeah at the end of the day, all this talk of a paper launch means nothing when AMD's 6800 series cards can't outsell hen's teeth.

You are misunderstanding the steam survey. Yes Steam has around 100 million active users but only a fraction of them participate in the survey at any given time. You are much more likely to get a survey if you change you hardware as well. Heck I got one the day I changed form 16GB to 32GB of RAM. Without knowing steam's methodology for collecting data any conclusions on overall marketshare is misleading. It's not nearly that simple. Even turing shot up in the charts last launch as well despite not being as popular and having, to a lesser extent, stock issues as well.

Didn't you read the memo ? people were gobbling up Turing during the pandemic, that's why Turing cards were overpriced everywhere.
Statistical errors are everywhere, that not a reason to disregard Steam survey, that includes anecdotal evidence. The data will correct itself in the upcoming new surveys if there were any irregularity in this month survey.
Furthermore Steam is not even the entire PC gaming community, people who game on RTX 3080 might not have Steam, therefore the number of 3080 owners might actually exceed the stated number (and the miners definitely not interested in Steam Survey :D)

So much for the "Nvidia stock level is as just as bad as Navi 2"

Nvidia said they were producing as much stock as they did for Turing, so it really is the insane demand that is to blame for the shortages, at least in majority.

If Nvidia can keep the supply up or even accelerate it, it could be a major deciding factor for a lot of people. They want X performance level right now, and many will simply buy what they can actually get their hands on.

You are misunderstanding again. I was referring to steam hardware numbers during turing's launch, not now. Of course, steam survey does have it's statistical errors, like the Chinese language increasing it's share of the total language pie by 18% in a single month.

Statistical errors are everywhere, that not a reason to disregard Steam survey, that includes anecdotal evidence. The data will correct itself in the upcoming new surveys if there were any irregularity in this month survey.

You don't cover up statistical errors by pilling more incorrectly gathered data. Bad data = bad results. Steam realizes this, it's had to purge it's data 3 times just due to netcafes.

Furthermore Steam is not even the entire PC gaming community, people who game on RTX 3080 might not have Steam, therefore the number of 3080 owners might actually exceed the stated number (and the miners definitely not interested in Steam Survey :D)

Supposition based on supposition. First you have to prove your original claim (which you admit is based on potentially compromised data). Adding assumptions doesn't make an argument stronger.

Again, the number of survey participants is a tiny fraction of the overall steam userbase. I'd much rather rely on actual stock numbers and the stores that have published them thus far indicated that card numbers were indeed low.

In any case, as you yourself admit the data is a small sample size and potentially containing errors. Thus I'd recommend you recant your claim and wait for additional data to come in.

It would be one thing if steam provided the exact methodology to it's steam survey as in that case we could say for certain how it obtained it's numbers and how they apply to the broader steam user base. We don't have have that so you have to assume that there may be (and has been in the past) possibilities for issues with the numbers gathered. This is why any outfit performing analysis or surveys professionally provide data gathering methodology, so that anyone can confirm for themselves. When you look at steam's data you have to consider the gambit of possibilities in absence of that methodology and it's why I recommend a big grain of salt, especially when making broader generalization of the market at large.

Well there is only a finite amount of Ampere that Nvidia can produce per month and the initial demand is already 10x or 20x that, it will takes some time for the shortages to dissipate.
From various youtube channels, the 3090 has much better availability simply due to lesser demands. People can go to a Microcenter and grab a 3090.
Nvidia is probably saving 3090 chips for their 3080 Ti launch atm so I would hope they will have plenty of 3080 Ti stock at launch :D

That is incorrect. ANY Steam user running the Steam client participates by default in the hardware/software survey. Participation is not optional. The Steam client needs to know what hardware it is running on for compatibility and authetication reasons. For users, like me, who have multiple PC's running the same Steam account, each system is tabulated independently. You need to go read the fine print.

From the Steam Hardware & Software Survey Page in the client:

Steam conducts a monthly survey to collect data about what kinds of computer hardware and software our customers are using. Participation in the survey is optional, and anonymous. The information gathered is incredibly helpful to us as we make decisions about what kinds of technology investments to make and products to offer.

Link? Last time I read the user agreement it was specifically stated that system hardware and software data would be collected.
EDIT;
Ok, it's right there on the front page. Looks like they might have made a change. My Steam client is up to date and I see no options to disable the survey. Can't even find it in settings.

I don't there's any place to enable/disable. It's always frustrated me as I never get the pop-up on the PC I play games on, but do on garbage laptops that I just have the client installed on for chat or to watch the sales. I don't ever remember getting it on Linux either.

I'm sure the numbers must mean something, but I think it's a bit of a stretch to say that there are 230k people on Steam using an RTX 3080.

So you think internet cafes can afford RTX 3080 , are you living in some city in Mars perhaps?

I lost interest in the 3080 ever since I saw that it's selling anywhere from 1050 to 1650 euros in my country. Too rich for my blood.

Statistical significance doesn't mean everyone has to participate, only a randomized controlled group is required.
For example Steam only use a randomized user base of 1 million for each of their survey, the percentage in that 1 million users is enough data to correlate to their entire user base. Steam survey is very randomized in that rarely they even ask you to participate, maybe once a year. The next month Steam will ask for another 1 million user data that is non-overlapping with the previous data. This has always been how people do statistic.

Do you think medical experts tested the Vaccine on everyone before claiming that it works 95% of the entire population ? No, they tested it on like 40k people LOL

It's a pop-up that asks you to participate in the survey. I've gotten it once, a couple months ago. You're able to decline it when it happens. It's not going on in the background gathering data all the time. They gather the data when the popup happens, not continously. Not all users get it, like I said I've only gotten it once (they run it each month), and I've been using Steam for over 8 years now.

Well I guess me and my older bro are part of that 200k aswell, just insane the sheer volume of demand for new hardware has become. Would it be because of the pandemic has caused a massive knock on effect with people trying to find ways to make extra money and the fact people have more time now because they are forced to work from home?
The production line isn't at full speed still because of the pandemic isn't helping either.

I've never seen that. However, I've had to open support tickets and they knew my hardware, so I know they're collecting hardware specs. Now whether that data is shared with the survey is the question.

I changed hardware as well, twice in the last 2 months. Didn't get a sinlge survey prompt.

Anyway, it's currently much easier to buy a prebuilt with Ampere, and I would argue a fair chunk if not the majority of those 200k are from prebuilts. Chip makers prioritizing the OEM market instead of DIY market in not really a surprise.
