Who is honestly going to back up a drive with just games on it? OP already said their friend only wants one drive so there won't be a backup drive anyway.Hi,
Easier to back up.

The main advantage of a separate game drive is that if you ever need to reinstall your OS (which happens, although far more rarely these days than a decade ago) you won't need to re-download hundreds of gigabytes of game data (at least on platforms that support it, like Steam).
That being said, unless your friend absolutely needs the best performance possible (Hint: they don't. Seriously. They don't. They won't even be able to tell the difference. Not whatsoever.), the 980 is complete and utter overkill. Get an XPG SX8200 Pro and spend the $100 difference on something they'll actually be able to tell the difference with. Or, of course, get the 2TB version for the same price as the 980. AFAIK the SX8200 should be a bit faster than the 970 Evo in real-world use.

On paper and in peak bandwidth benchmarks. The speed difference will not be noticeable at all in real-world workloads. The difference in application load times or game level load times will be so small that you'd never, ever be able to tell the difference. Even going from a SATA to NVMe SSD is barely noticeable, going from fast NVMe to very fast NVMe is imperceptible in the vast majority of uses.but isn't it much slower
I'll second this. I might recommend a few other SSD's that offer similar or better performance for a better price;Of those two I would get the 970 evo plus 2tb.
