Dell G7 i7-10750H undervolting

I don't think the Dell bios will let me undervolt the CPU so I'm thinking maybe use throttle stop.
However, does the undervolt interfere with any of Dell's Alienware Command center overclocks/power limits being increased?
Does it void the warranty?
Lastly, what are the recommended settings I should try and how should I test it? (I know not all chips undevolt the same)

Specs for G7 17.3
i7-10750H
RTX 2070 Max-P
16 Gb DRR4 2933
512 Gb SSD
300 Hz IPS Display

Alienware Center may impose its own Power Limits much like other proprietary software from other manufacturers. If you set power limits in ThrottleStop that are overwritten by Alienware Center you may need to disable/uninstall the Alienware Center. You won't know until you test them together. Since the 10750H is a locked processor it can't be overclocked and an undervolt should help it maintain maximum turbo boost.

Software undervolting does not void the warranty.

Within the ThrottleStop FIVR window if you see "Locked" next to "FIVR Control' at the top you may be on a restricted firmware that does not allow undervolting. That would be the first thing I check after install.

A typical "safe" place to start undervolting on Core/Cache is -.50mV and you can progressively go higher as you check for stability either with TS Bench built-in tool or other games/benchmarks.

There are many other tutorials for ThrottleStop but you could start here -

Or read here - http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/the-throttlestop-guide.531329/

Alright, thanks! If you don't mind me asking, I have more questions on what I can do with the Dell G7. Do I have to make a new thread or just continue talking through here? I wanna get the most out of the 300hz screen.

You can do what ever you want with the laptop, you bought it. People usually watch movies, play games, work stuff, ect.

I would ask here as it’s your original thread and D7 related. There are Dell specific forums that might have specific D7 model information, but there are certainly D7 owners here as well.

300Hz is nice! Going from 60-144Hz was great for me, I’d love an upgrade to 300Hz even more.

Going from 60hz to 120hz is great, from 120hz to 144hz ok, but from 144hz to 300hz+ is just marketing junk.

Personally, I come from 24-30 fps from 2014-2020 Until last Christmas which was I surprised cause I wanted for Ryzen 5000 mobile with 3000 mobile because I knew they would cut down the price on them because my parent was able to save enough or maybe just had it but was testing me. Either way, I'm super grateful. Also, I wanted to know if I could continue talking about little improvements to enhance the G7.

The little improvements are undervolting the processor if Dell havent locked it down, and overclocking the graphics card on a laptop is not worth it. You would only get single digit improvements in games. I have never really overclocked any of my laptops, I got my first laptop in August of 2007 with the Sager 2090 with a Nvidia 8600m gt.

I lowered it as low -160.2mV. It throttlestop working or am I just moving a slider

If you’re hitting Apply, and you’ve checked “Make changes immediately and write to .ini” it should be implementing changes immediately.

-.250mV and sometimes beyond is possible on some 7th and 8th gen chips. If -.160mV is stable you’re already off to a great start! Have you verified/noticed lower load temps?

@Thermally Insane Probably you only moving a slider with no effect because dell seem have locked in bios undervolt option.
But you can unlock it if you known guid varstore and offset of variable in nvram with a modified uefi grub boot.

I did it with my g5 5500 (10750H + rtx 2060)
this is a link to uefi modified grub

@Thermally Insane - Post a screenshot when asking questions. Does the ThrottleStop FIVR window show your undervolt in the monitoring table? Did you remember to undervolt both the CPU core and cache?

Yes, I have been doing both the CPU core and Cache. I'm guessing it's locked by comparing it with the image you sent.

I'll give it a go. Can you help me find the start menu? I also can't find the guide. Laptop's don't like Florida hot weather. Well, when it IS hot. Currently, its coldish.

In firmware g7 7700 version 1.6

Offset of two variable should be the same of mine g5 guid CpuSetup

0x76491 Form: View/Configure CPU Lock Options, FormId: 0x1012 {01 86 12 10 74 01}
0x76497 One Of: CFG Lock, VarStoreInfo (VarOffset/VarName): 0x3E, VarStore: 0x3, QuestionId: 0x166, Size: 1, Min: 0x0, Max 0x1, Step: 0x0 {05 91 AD 03 AE 03 66 01 03 00 3E 00 10 10 00 01 00}
0x764A8 One Of Option: Disabled, Value (8 bit): 0x0 {09 07 04 00 00 00 00}
0x764AF One Of Option: Enabled, Value (8 bit): 0x1 (default) {09 07 03 00 30 00 01}
0x764B6 End One Of {29 02}
0x764B8 One Of: Overclocking Lock, VarStoreInfo (VarOffset/VarName): 0xDA, VarStore: 0x3, QuestionId: 0x167, Size: 1, Min: 0x0, Max 0x1, Step: 0x0 {05 91 A9 03 AA 03 67 01 03 00 DA 00 10 10 00 01 00}
0x764C9 One Of Option: Disabled, Value (8 bit): 0x0 {09 07 04 00 00 00 00}
0x764D0 One Of Option: Enabled, Value (8 bit): 0x1 (default) {09 07 03 00 30 00 01}
0x764D7 End One Of {29 02}

so you should only need boot from a usb token with a fat partition
you need to write binary https://github.com/datasone/grub-mod-setup_var/releases/download/1.1/modGRUBShell.efi in and EFI\boot\ directory and rename it in bootx64.efi

disable secure mode boot from bios and when restart press f12 and boot from usb token

when efi shell started you should check
the two location with setup_var CpuSetup 0x3e
and
setup_var CpuSetup 0xda

they should be both 0x1 so it mean oveclocking and cfg locked

you must change both values to 0x0

with command
setup_var CpuSetup 0x3e 0x0
setup_var CpuSetup 0xda 0x0

then reboot in windows and you should be able to undervolt cpu.
Use this information at your risk of course. i don't assume any resposability for loss or damage.

I really wouldn't bother with 300 hz. I just ordered a new laptop that has a 165 Hz 1440P display. It also had a 300 hz 1080P option, it took exactly 0 seconds for me to decide which option between the two was better. :p

High refresh rates are good, but:

1000/60=16.67 ms
1000/120=8.33 ms
1000/144=6.94 ms
1000/165=6.06 ms
1000/300 = 3.33 ms
1000/360 = 2.78 ms

The difference between 60 and 120 is 8.34 ms, increasing to 300 reduces another 5 ms between refreshes. 360 hz is the highest refresh rate I've seen to date, and that only removes .55 ms between refreshes beyond what 300 hz does.

Hi, you posted the only screenshot in the whole internet with a 10750h and cache ratio max at 43 instead of 47. You set that or has always been at that value? Because in all other threads regarding throttlestop+10750h every user has 47, but my CPU can reach a maximum of 43

These are from a MSI GE75 with a i7 10750h. The 43 is all core.

yes, that's the same. But I'm referring to the cache ratio (or ring ratio), invisible on xtu, that is in charge of controlling the "not core" frequency. You can see that value inside throttlestop's FIVR (and searching for cache), or using HWiNFO (and searching for ring)
