SN850 vs motherboard heatsink?

I have a SN850 1TB coming my way, and was wondering whether the included X570 Unify heatsink and the SN850's heatsink will perform similarly in thermality -- or if one is better than the other at keeping temperatures lower?

Anyone with experience from this particular scenario?

It doesn't really matter. The one reviewed here at TPU didn't have any heatsink and it was just fine. M.2 NVMe drives only really get hot when you are writing a ton of data to the drive, which is rare in normal use.

If you got the model with the heatsink, leave it on. It should be better than the board heatsinks, as it's taller and obviously designed for the drive. As it has a metal bottom plate, that should also help spread the heat a bit, something the board heatsinks wouldn't do.
At least WD has seemingly designed it to be removable, which not all SSD heatsinks are, but they seem to say that you shouldn't remove it.

Running my 2Tb SN850 with a cheapo 10 euro heatsink from amazon, temps never get over 55c and that's on the back of the motherboard.

Please do share your read / write speeds when you receive it :)

I have a Western Digital SN850 2TB, and the onboard heatsink of my Maximus 12 Extreme (there's also a Samsung 870 Evo on there too) keeps it frosty cool (easily under 55C in daily use), without needing the WD heatsink.
It didn't pass 53C after some long gaming sessions and an ATTO Queue depth 4 benchmark.

BTW Only buy the heatsink model for boards that have dedicated single dedicated heatsinks like the atrocious heat traps on the Gigabyte Z390 Aorus boards.
For boards which full cover heatsinks, better to get the non heatsink model, since you will be forced to remove the heatsink anyway (unless you actually want it and intend to save it for another system or drive).

It took me a while to answer, i was surfing for a drive and stumbled over this review, and i noticed your WD drive doing 3 GB/s in ATTO,
and then if you are running it at half speed, you will not get an accurate temperature reading, so maybe giving advice on heatsink is pointless.
MAybe it was on PCIe 3.0 interface on your motherboard ? It should reach close to, or over 5 GB/s in ATTO benchmark on PCIe 4.0,
and the man asking, is on x570 which has PCIe 4.0 M.2, so he will drive it to maximum.
Just an observation (a really late one)

I am just using the one on my motherboard.. its fine. It sits at 27-29 and only gets warm when the GPU is running. The highest I saw HWinfo record was 43c. You should be ok. FWIW my GPU was @ ~320w.
