Hi guys,

Take a look see at the picture I've taken. I've high lighted the so called black line going through the screen. Only noticed this a couple of day ago. Pretty sure it wasn't like this before.

Its most prominent when the screen is on a white back ground.

Monitor in question is in my Sys Spec.

Any ideas why its done/doing this? Is it fixable? Time for a new monitor? Cheers.

The only time I had a line going through my monitor the monitor was going bad. I replaced the monitor with a spare and no line was visible. Do you have a spare monitor to test it or can you borrow one?

Took me a bit to see what you were talking about - then it suddenly became obvious. At first, I didn't understand what you meant by "so called". Then I was looking for a line like this: _____________________ .

Then I realized you mean that large dark shadow(?) going horizontally across the screen.

Have you tried adjusting the brightness and contrast controls? These settings are typically set at the factory to provide the brightest image on the showroom floor and not the most accurate image. This is why it is normal to need to "calibrate" all monitors (and especially TVs) once set up in our homes. And the best way to do that is with a colorimeter.

I note that shadow is in the center. This could indicate too much brightness in the backlighting.

As far as being time for a new monitor - that's simply up to you and whether you can talk your brain into ignoring it, or not. However, before spending money on a new monitor, I sure would try that monitor on another computer, and another monitor on this computer as suggested by 64K - to verify the problem is in the monitor and not your graphics solution.

That's definitely a faulty monitor. Depending on how old it is, either buy a new one, or RMA it.

The backlight is failing on it.

Failing backlight, just what I was going to say :p
I would go with side backlighting isn't working. Either that, or could it even be possible there's even more backlight bleeding after some period?

It looks like a ccfl tube has failed, except it's LED backlit. It's obviously not edge lit, so it'll be the strip of LEDs in the centre. Check YT for backlight repair worklogs.

Yeah, that will give up the ghost at some point. Could be years, though.
Replace/service it asap if it bothers you enough, hang on to it if it doesn't.

You're looking at LEDs going bad, but that may be because of a faulty contact somewhere, something that a service will fix in no time at all.

It may very well be a failing backlight. The problem is, it may still last like that for years to come. If only annoying with some light backgrounds, it could easily still provide years of decent, useful service.

If being used for photo or graphics editing, it is probably worth replacing sooner rather than later. But if used for typical office and school work, updating/following social media, etc. I see no reason to rush out and replace.

I would go with side backlighting isn't working.
Ummm, if "side" backlighting was the problem, pretty sure the dark shadow would be vertical and not horizontal.

Side as in... on the side in the middle. Not the ones in the corner. Guess I wasn't specific enough for you.

You were specific enough, and I'm sticking with what I said. The dark shadowy bar has an even width (and darkness) going from left to right. If side backlighting was out, the dark bar would go up and down. And if corner backlighting, the dark shadow would probably have a round, oval or irregular shape in the middle. Not a bar that goes from one edge to the opposite edge.

Guess I wasn't specific enough for you! :D

Regardless, in terms of helping the OP, as bug first noted (by sneaking in ahead of me by 1 minute ;)), it may be years before it fails completely. So whether it is time to replace it now, or not, is really up to the OP and his or her own tolerance level. Or, as qubit suggested, if still under warranty, get an RMA to return and repair or replace it.

Is the monitor LED or cold cathode tube lighting?

I always wonder about the capacitors in the power supply section.

If under warranty, I would too. But if not, and I had to pay for a new monitor out of my own pocket, which are not bottomless, I might think twice about how quickly I would want to do this.

And in my case, since I cannot live with just one monitor, and since aesthetics is a factor (to ensure peace and tranquility in the home ;)), that means I would have to budget for two identical monitors. Budgets may not be a factor from some, but certainly are for many.

Yep its driving me nuts.. So its cactus yeah?

If so all good I'm up for a new monitor upgrade : )

So, I may need some more help with a new monitor as there are sooo many options these days.

I'm looking into a curved monitor. Can anybody help me here that's gone from a flat panel to curved and never looked back or switched back etc?

Thanks again ;)

yep backlight is def dying on that. i mean monitors aren't meant to last forever, they all have x amount of hour lifespan. so its time to get a new one!

DONT DO CURVED VA ITS FREAKING HORRIBLE!!!! please stick with IPS, high end IPS has not latency issues and is loads better than VA.

buy this. thank me later.

I definitely wouldn't spend any time or money on trying to fix it, no.

So tell us, do you want G-SYNC/FreeSync for gaming, just general use, or more specialised like "productivity" apps etc? What size? Do you care too much whether it's TN/IPS etc? It will help us to make suggestions for you.

Oh hang on, you want a cuived monitor! Nah, talk to the hand! :p j/k

But seriously, curved isn't as popular as it used to be, so your options will be more limited.

Personally, I like flat, but there's no right or wrong on this one.

I literally just unpacked AOC CQ27G2U, 1440p 144 Hz with 1500R curving. Immersive to say the least, I have a feeling it's going to be a downgrade looking at flat screens now. Went with this one because of ok price and specifications. Oh well, now it's time to wait a few years to get a decent GPU for a normal price :p

I don't recommend curved either. It is important to note there is only one ideal head position with a curved monitor. A little to the left, little to the right, little too close or little too far away and the focal point of the left, center, right of the screen is no longer where your head is. Or the right side looks great, and the left then fades (or vice versa). And if more than one person is viewing, only one person (or neither) gets the optimal viewpoint.

I know several who got curved, totally loved them - at first. But soon went back to flat.

I would not consider going back to flat being a "downgrade".

nothing wrong with curved, but all curved use VA panel and its freaking horrible the smearing in game... you will refund it if you get one, wait and see. IPS is night and day better - no smearing at all. makes gaming much more immersive imo.

I do like this screen I'm using now. I don't mind getting something similar. I'm content with 60Hz but happy to go 100-165Hz.

Doesn't need to be GSYNC as ill probably be running a 6800XT with it.

With the curved option, its just a thought. Wanted to get peoples opinions first as I've had very little experience with them.

Here guys currently what I'm looking at as this is my local PC shop: Shop 30" and Above | PLE Computers Need some recommendations.

you will regret not doing 144-165hz. once you try it for a few days on a regular basis, it becomes very very hard to go back to 60hz.

Can you explain more on smearing? I just did a quick test in Mad Max, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with this VA panel. Games runs and looks amazing at 1440p, looks way better than 1080p. Dell which I own is IPS. I'm pretty sure that high end IPS panels will do better, but they also cost significantly more, that's what I read on displayninja.

you can only see the smearing in dark games. play... Dark Souls or Dragons Dogma, games that have a very dark thematic. the smearing makes playing them impossible imo.

smearing isn't to much of an issue for bright games like Mad Max where you are in the desert

you will regret not doing 144-165hz

I've got a 65" 4K Samsung TV that can run 120Hz @ 2560 x 1440 and have been playing around with that res and Hz for some time now and I don't think its the "be all or end all" to have over 60Hz.

What I will say though, if you drop under that 60Hz refresh it doesn't play nice. I suppose I've know this for years now as 60Hz has been around for decades.
