After a new monitor

Been thinking of this one but it's 4K. Think it be ok to running it at 1080P ?, or will it just end up washed out or some thing ?, How ever be nice to hear if anyone else has one ?.

Unfortunately, whenever a resolution is upscaled, antialiasing is turned on by default, which ruins the picture by making it soft and blurry. It normally can't be switched off either, which I find infuriating.

NVIDIA and AMD recently enabled integer scaling which does away with upscaling AA, giving a pin-sharp picture, so 1920x1080 scaled to full size on a 3840x2160 monitor will look just as clear as on a 1080p monitor, if not a little clearer, because of the way the pixels are rendered.

However, your NVIDIA card isn't supported, but your AMD one might be. Look in the driver control panel for both cards and check if its there. If not, then all is not lost. On Windows 10, set the resolution to 4K and the scaling factor to 2.00. This will give you a 1080p sized desktop with the clarity and detail of 4K. It's a beauty to behold!

What gets me, is that the old NVIDIA cards obviously support it too, right from the very first one more than 20 years ago, but NVIDIA is just being bloody minded. A card has to upscale and then apply AA as a second function. Simply don't apply it, so it's idiotic how we've never had it before. I remember years ago, I could faff with the scaling options in the driver to get integer scaling (there was no specific setting) but NVIDIA then blocked that ability in later drivers. Also, the monitors and TVs will do there own scaling with AA, but again don't give you the option of turning off the AA, for no good reason. You can tell that this is something that really niggles me.

Likely to have ghosting, input lag and tearing. Might be good for movies and some browsing, but not for gaming.

Windows 10 uses integer scaling for a while.

PC content (desktop, web browsing) in 1080p is still be a bit blurry on 4K display, but movies and games are fine.

Yeah i figure that it's gotta be better than TV either way. although that said my 12 year old Toshiba HDTV beats the crap out of the mid\lower Samsung panels with better angles and less blur.

Although i need the size which is a issue, and there is no way i am throwing $900+ on a Monitor with 120Hz+.

It should work on the RX580, in the picture i posted turn the GPU Scaling on to make the option available, or else it just says not supported ( HAHAH ).

No idea about the 1060, as @qubit said it was working on nVidia card and then some thing happened. you would have to look more in to it.

Perhaps I should clarify that it wasn't a supported feature at the time, more something that could be stumbled upon. I think perhaps what it actually did was to trick the monitor into switching off the AA function when scaling up the picture. The integer scaling function built into today's drivers works in all cases. I suspect that it works by actually feeding the monitor a native resolution signal so that the monitor's AA doesn't trigger and then doing the scaling sans AA on the graphics card. I can check this on my 4K TV later.

this one just came out... no reviews yet, but it has 165hz 4000:1 (a first for a monitor of these specs) contrast, 27" 1440p. its $259 on Amazon and $269 on newegg. could be hit or miss, so best to wait for reviews I suppose

I did find a flaw in tot he idea, with the 290X\390X at 4k can only do 30fps .

Maybe they fixed it time will tell .

That’s unfortunate and is a separate issue. It just means a clock speed limitation in the card.

I might have a solution, If i connect PC to AV as normal and then from that to TV. A displayport to HDMI to my AV then HDMI to HDMI on Monitor.

Likely anything GCN-gen. (at least the discrete GPUs)

Is it limited to 30 Hz for the monitor? That's an HDMI 1x limitation. It seems a lot only have HDMI 1x support! (at least the HDMI cable included, I suspect!)

Yeah well picking up a few DP-HDMI cables see if that works, what is going make it more of a pain is that i use a AV receiver, Will see soon, waiting on the monitor right now see were i am with this 100%.

My only concern with downscaling(if I understand the OP correctly) from 4k native resolution to 1080p on a 40" screen is that it can be hard on the eyes; especially when doing any kind of art work or reading.

Well you do not change the monitor in windows to get the scaling to work, you run the display at 4k and the games at 1080P, as long as you use fullscreen every thing is taken care of.

i left my HDMI cable connected too so i could have the sound going though the AV while using the DP for picture.

a solid 60 be perfectly fine for me, $999 is still $400 more than i payed for this one. Just tired of the GPU prices and i aint paying scalper prices.

Tried 2 Samsung TV's ( $300, and $500 price tags ) and come no were near as good as this is.
