Hi all,

Im getting ready to build a new system, because of tge chip shortage i've been looking @ used CPU's on Ebay and forums.

With all the cpu microcode hacks becoming more common, should inve worried/concerned about buying a chip thats been compromised. Is it even possible for a hacker to mess the microcode and gain access to my info later on?

Or am I being paranoid?

What you're talking about is way more of a rare occasion than you getting a trojan from a website, but I don't get why you're looking at used CPUs. Go new on CPU, it's the GPU you should be worried about.

No, and yes. Hacks on that level require access to motherboards, not CPUs.

You're being paranoid. When buying from eBay just look at the sellers feedback to give you an idea of trustworthiness.
Most people on there are general householders looking to sell their unwanted items.
But always be cautious, If it sounds too good to be true it usually is.

No idea where you are but if it's in the USA and you're near a Micro Center they have the best new CPU prices by far. As for used CPU's Ebay can be a great resource if the seller takes offers. I make lowball offers on ones with cosmetic blemishes or minor scratches on the heatspreaders plus have a return policy. Since I'm not a gamer I usually buy used Xeons literally dirt cheap.

I buy odds and ends (adapters, Delta fans, etc) from China but never CPU's or motherboards from outside the USA. Call me paranoid but I feel the odds are more in my favor of not getting a defective or counterfeit high-price item when sourced somewhat locally. I just got a refund last week on three DOA 120mm "Delta" fans from China that I highly suspect are fakes (they are very different from others of the same model number I have that work). That was only $32, a risk I was willing to take and Ebay took care of for me. I'll never send hundreds of dollars for anything out of the country.

OK, just get conned in your own country then :D
Lets face it the world is full of them, even on your own doorstep.
So far, so good on CPU's off Ebay. Over 100+ purchased and none defective. I also make sure the sellers offer returns first before buying. Ebay and PayPal have been fantastic for much less expensive crap that was defective. Full money returns and I've never had to send anything back.

There's a vast difference from buying those fans from Alibabas and say Mouser. There are retailers over the globe that are way more legit than that of Newegg, for example. So you can get shoved in the U.S just like anywhere else, as was pointed by the other user.

You're also giving Ebay as your base which is not even a great example to begin with. It's called fleabay for a reason, any idiot can join and sell something. This is not a case with tech forum BSTs and such. Open markets will never be as great as closed ones.

Similar here in the UK. But Ebay have just made the game harder for potential scammers by ditching Paypal and demanding sellers hand over their bank details.

Hi,
The one time I used Aliexpress or how ever it's spelled it was a con and yes from china only a 25.us item
Never delivered when they insisted it was and it was at the post office awaiting my pick up lol but post office delivers the package or leaves a pick up notice, of course aliexpress instantly sided with the con lol
Luckily credit card company repo'ed the money.

The only time I pondered buying from them was when a friend's friend was in the sellers region so he could go and check out if their address was legit or not.
I got twitchy and didn't bother in the end.

Newegg was far better years ago. A month ago I bought some new G.Skill TridentZ Neo from them and what was inside the box wasn't what it said on the outside or what I'd paid for. They sent me a return shipping label and gave me a full refund. That happens with Amazon as well. I have an account at Newark for electronic things that have to be perfect when new. The Delta fans I get from China are several times more expensive at Newark plus I have a far wider variety to choose from. Consider the source when buying anything. I've been at this a long long time now (21+ years) and did it professionally before retiring. Caveat emptor

I passed on the direct Ebay account thing and still use PayPal there. For large ticket items I use Visa and that has full buyer protection.

I try and stay with the regional stores, but even they can be difficult at times giving you the runaround when wanting an RMA or return.
Yeah no isses with Amazon although I only tend to buy fans and other small items from them.
Long time PC user here too although my enthusiasm has been waning of late due to lack of someting to get my teeth into.
I passed on the direct Ebay account thing and still use PayPal there. For large ticket items I use Visa and that has full buyer protection.
Same, and I was offered 80% off selling fees if I signed up. I skipped it. Don't need the extra hassle.
I only use my CC on eBay. Ditched my Paypal account some time back.

For CPU's off Ebay I always message the seller before buying. Their response lets me know if I'm dealing with a potential huckster or not. It also allows me to make offers below asking prices. Sellers who move a lot of products usually are willing to deal if your offer isn't too ridiculous. For the past couple of years I've only been buying top-end Xeons for X79 and X99 platforms and it's worked out very well for me.

I miss my old EVGA X79 Xeon machine. Can't say I was that keen on my Asus X99 setup. It seemed like it was haunted (Not joking) and had me tear the thing apart on numerous occasion. It just felt as if it wasn't performing as it should. Then I got wind of the peeps saying there was an issue with the power delivery on the Prime boards. Bah...

Bah...
Hi,
Yeah asus bios didn't help x99 one bit those things were committing suicide after broadwell-e released
Think mine finally died haven't looked at it again since it wouldn't post I just relived a 775 socket board and q9550 instead of dealing with it anymore ruling out other hardware as the issue now it's down to board sabertooth or 5930k.

Yeah most sellers have no idea if the stuff works or not they just buy and sell trying to flip stuff.

I remember the back an forth bios tinkering om my X99 to get it running OK-ish. I had the 5930K running on the board but ended up selling both.
Been on MSI mobo's for a while now since switching to AMD. not even a hiccup from either my B450 and B550 boards at all even though some slate the brand.

My X99 Deluxe has been rock solid since getting it when they first came out. 5930K was good, 5960X better and now I have a 16 core E5 2683 V4 in it. The Xeon is vastly superior for A/V production work plus runs a lot cooler than the i7's.
