I have to support few let's say "PC incompatible" persons and already their use of PC use designed Windows generates enough support work.
Hence it would be more likely for stony mile marker to learn to dance than to get them to manage fashion excrement GUI of Win10 without constantly bugging me.

Classic/Open Shell solves Start menu situation, but that flat Earth retarded (bad even in phones) theme needs to go.
So what are the best ways to have more Win7 like look and which would be least likely to stop working every time Microsoft pushes out patches?

OpenShell is great but I prefer Start10. It's not free but it only costs $5USD for a lifetime license. Plus, it has a free 30 day trial period so you can try before you buy.

I never cared for it, but WindowBlinds from Stardock is a pretty stable option. I used Start8 (from them) on Windows 8 for years without any issues when updates/patches came down.

From their screenshots:

I have OpenShell on my HTPC machine. No issues so far, it allows me quick access of stuff I need, so.. works. It doesnt make W10 look like W7 ofc.

I wouldnt mind if someone made back-to-XP look either. Or even Win 98. :D

Ummm, yes it does. In fact, that is one of its key features - to bring back W7's classic start menu and boot you directly into a W7 style desktop.

Ummm, Google is an amazing thing. How to Make Windows 10 Look Like Windows XP

Ton of stuff that can either break or doesnt work properly. I did quite long research on this some time ago, there is no "safe" solution to this. Classic start menu is just what it says. Windows isnt just start menu.

For sure there are ways to make Win look like older ones, or really old ones, but it would require software that goes really deep under Windows skin, which usually goes with all sorts of problems, including Win 10 fighting you back on one too many fronts.

Definitely not paying any more than necessary.
Having to pay Microsoft for shitty GUI OS and buggy patches often breaking more than they fix is already bad enough.
Microsoft should be paying us for working as their alpha tester.

Damn I miss the times Gates was at the helm of Microsoft...

even Win 98. :D
Even Windows 3.1 would have more sense making GUI than 10.

Yea, could work with that.

For me optimal was XP. Also was my longest running system. I really liked x64 version (which was really Windows for servers in disguise, sadly not much stuff worked on that). Sure it had its quirks and problems like most Wins, but it was fairly predictable.

I have been using Classic Shell for a long time.
And that's fine but it is important to understand development on Classic Shell ended, as seen here, 3 1/2 years ago. I do not recommend using a program that is no longer under development.

As noted through that link,
Development has been picked up by volunteers on GitHub under the name Open Shell
If you like Classic Shell, I would urge you to update/upgrade to Open Shell immediately to ensure you have the latest and most secure version to day.

I've been using Start 10 for years and for what it costs, it's one of the best paid Windows enhancements I've ever bought. In fact, thinking about it, it's the only one.
It's almost infinitely customisable and there are some really cool Start buttons around.

I wonder how that compares to Open Shell. It only costs a few dollars too, so it's not a major decision to try it out.

Open Shell is free.

And I have compared both many times. Both are great but IMO, Open Shell tries to do too many things that really have little to do with bringing back the old familiar and well liked W7 start menu and desktop.

Start10 just seems more polished to me - something I would expect from a dedicated team of paid employees. Open Shell, on the other hand, is an open source project being developed by various volunteers. That in itself, is not a bad thing - but it can lead to the focus being pulled back and forth with no one objective being in charge.

Start10 is simple done right. Open Shell reminds me of paid versions of security programs that offer no better security protection while at the same time, add a bunch of bloated features most users never need.

That said, if Start10 were not around, I would be using Open Shell. I think it is better than the other alternatives, StartIsBack and Power8.

Oh? So you are saying you tested and have experienced reliability and support issues with Start10, Open Shell and the other programs?

I've been using Start10 on multiple computers here since it first came out as Start8 for Windows 8. I have never had any stability, reliability, or "weird" shell problems. Therefore, I have never needed their support. I did have a non-technical question regarding one of their Start menu button images they used to offer with Start8 that they removed from Start10. All I can say is I got a reply answering my question, as well as a link to the removed images I wanted :), within a hour. So sure can't say anything against that either.

That said, I also tried and do like StartIsBack too - just like Start10 better in part for the same reason I like Start10 over Open Shell; StartIsBack includes a bunch of extra features I don't want or need.

So again, Start10 is simple done right.

Who said anything is wrong with the W10 Taskbar? I sure didn't.

I still use the Taskbar and I have enabled the Quick Launch Toolbar and put it on the W10 Taskbar too. I easily use both by making the Taskbar 3-lines high. This does two things which I like very much. First, it makes my System Tray /Notification Area clock 3-lines high so it displays the day of the week too. And that also allows the System Tray /Notification Area icons to appear in two rows instead of one - giving me much more room for my Quick Launch toolbar icons.

This is what the bottom of the screen looks like on Monitor #1 of my system. Monitor #2 only has the W10 Taskbar displaying the icons for the programs appearing on that monitor only.

Win10 is far from Win7 with that retarded flat theme.
Whoever devised that abomination should get smashed to flat silhouette, because three dimensional body is clearly so last millennium.
User interface should be clear about what's button/what's decorative graphics and what's normal text/what's text button etc.
Nothing of that happens in Win10.

And that "start" menu pushing all that bloatware and Store is something, which should have single disable button.
Once in a time you were even able to uncheck crap you knew you didn't need during Windows install process.

As opposed to some being biased from too much "kissing" of Microsoft's rear end?

And looks like now Firefox joins for another push in scrapping UI to garbage with all these Egyptian hieroglyph design icons in it etc...
