Well...I am still stewing here with my Dell XPS 730x gorilla weighing-in at a cool 65-pounds and which I purchased in 2008. That's when I had the real money! Upgrading a 100% Dell propiatary case and MB is difficult to say the least. My trusty dremel although has helped on occasions to keeping me going over the years and 'Windows 7 Ultimate' has held-up rather well. Everything is different with the XPS 730x. Conventional MB's will simply not fit. The IO shield is located upside-down and the wiring assemblies are all propiatary. The PSU has all propiatary cabling. Cable management considerations (pass-throughs) did not exist in 2008. But now halfway through 2021 has me thinking and pressing hard to jumping into a new EATX case set-up along with my now unruly sausage fingers. Any present XPS system upgrading ideas? Probably not as the "Dell Propiatary Police" will not permit this too happen? Nevertheless any thoughts of wisdom for an old warrior with $4,000 burning a hole in his pocket and seeking to play "Metro Exodus" in ultimate settings at 1440p and a high monitor refresh rate? There could however be a quick-fix and giving 'Digital Storm' (as an example) the business. But that is not the way I want to go as it takes the fun and self-accomplishment totally out of the equation. Or just perhaps I should 'wait-out' the year to forego hardware shortages (pricing) and plan my money and madness towards the new PC tech arriving sometime soon? Greetings from the man on the street!

It's the middle of chip shortage, forget ultra settings and high refresh rate. During these times it would be pretty nice to run something like Metro at all at 1440p. To run it at all at 1440p low you need GTX 1650 Super or RX 580 and you will get 60-70 fps. But you have GTX 980 Ti, which will run Metro at 1440p high adequately well (50-60 fps). Meanwhile your CPU is ancient and is bottlenecking GTX 980 Ti hard. You are likely not seeing even half of your card's power with that ancient Core 2 Quad. You don't need to replace your GPU, but you should upgrade your platform and get at the very least some modern quad core with hyperthreading or optimally a six core chip. Something like 10600K or 5600X is all you need. Once you eliminate the bottleneck, you should see pretty nice boost. Perhaps at 1440p medium you would get some better than 60 fps.

Nice build, but not appropriate in this case. The OP has been using the same system for 13 years. So we should be suggesting builds to last similarly.

@Tom Sunday This is my suggestion. I pretty much went all out considering how long you have been using your C2Qx system (I do miss my old Q9650). It is $100 over your stated budget, and if that matter, just drop the SSHD.

Very good points. Thank you. Indeed my ancient Core 2 is a major set-back. The main culprit as things stand right now. When all is set and done and given the present Dell propiatary delimma it looks that I am forced to purchase a all around new set-up. Why_Me came up with a nice suggested total specification package. Another big thank you for taking the time. As such I will sit back now for a while and letting all of this sink in for a bit. Considering my 'squireled away' budget and the newly supplied great commentaries, there are a lot of descisons for me up in the air and to spending the $$$ wisely.

Go for the system Why_Me suggested minus the GPU. Keep using your 980 Ti untill card prices start to settle a bit. Or join a stock alert group and get an RTX 3080 FE for MSRP like I did :)

You don't need a 16core processor to run that game on ultra settings, such a waste of money. Get a 6core 5600x, and why a sshd hard drive, those are a waste also. Get a larger capacity hard drive for the same price of that 2tb sshd.

The 3080 Ti was a dumb choice on my part but all I saw was $4000 budget. :D

I didn't put that build together to play a particular game. I put it together with the mindset that the OP has used his current computer for 13 years, so I put together a build suggestion that would have just as long a life span as his previous build.

The main question here is is how much is your 980 Ti being bottlenecked. You could buy a whole new platform for 400 or 500 dollars. You can even go cheap and get i5 11400F, some B560 board and cheap 16GB DDR4 kit. 980 Ti won't do Ultra at 1440p too well, but depending on how much it was bottlenecked in the first place, perhaps this performance boost is going to be good enough for you. Perhaps 1440p medium settings are good enough. Upgrading your CPU is the cheapest way to get big performance boost, but if you absolutely want 1440p ultra and at high fps, then you can't avoid buying a new graphics card. And that's exactly what would be nice to avoid, because cards right are overpriced by 2-3 times and many think that they will become cheaper soon. However, that's a speculation and that may not happen or happen, but cards will become less cheaper than expected.

This is the main decision here. Economically it would be wise to not buy a graphics card now as they are expected to get massively cheaper soon (how soon nobody knows, but perhaps a in a year). If you have plenty of money and don't mind paying way more than those cards are actually worth, then you most likely can buy them. My only suggestion would be to avoid eBay and used cards. You never know from who they came from and you might lose a warranty. Also somebody might offload their broken card and they know that people are now trying to buy any card at all, so such scam probability is higher. If you decide to buy overpriced card, then you should buy one new. And if you do that, then I don't be surprised that card's price will drop 3 or 4 times after just one year. If you are mentally prepared for that, then by all means buy one, otherwise GTX 980 Ti is still a decent card and all you would need for it is just a better CPU. And if you expect to reduce the hit by mining with your new card, then chances aren't very high that you will be profitable long enough and even then it will mean months of 24/7 mining and not using it for playing games. Buying a graphics card right now is only fine, if 3000 dollars mean very little to you. It would be much better to spend it on bicycle or some other hobby that is just as fun to you.

Upgrade everything but the 980ti for now your Core 2 extreme is bottlenecking the gpu on average 50%. Then just lookout for a 3060ti/6700xt or better for MSRP. (used 2080 super/2080ti is not a bad idea either)

I know I will likely get some flack for saying this, but pre-builts do not come with the premium of buying a GPU out in the wild.
From what I see, many of them start around the $2000 mark, and can be upgraded to suit your needs.

What stock alert would this be?

To OP - do not buy GPU right now at inflated price. All signs suggest that we're past the peak and prices finally started to come down. If you're in US that means you still should be able to score FE variant of 30xx series at BB or something from AMD directly (they should have stock updates at their store around 10(?)am on Thursdays). In the long run it's still your money so it's all up to you. Good luck.

...if you absolutely want 1440p ultra and at high fps, then you can't avoid buying a new graphics card. Otherwise GTX 980 Ti is still a decent card and all you would need for it is just a better CPU.
Your response! All very good stuff and excellent advise. Given what I have going at the present with my propiatry (XPS 730x) friends from Dell and along your guideline commentaries, I decided to hold the horses and 'wait-out' for the market to clear it's way. Then looking with one eye towards the 'year-end' with its promised new tech and (CPU) innovations. Basically not jumping ship just yet with the given and present AMD/INTEL gen-choices. My final new system purchase (likely a premium 3000 series GPU and MB) will indeed come expensive and I was hoping in getting 5-6 years of bliss out of it! So might as well then go big $$$ and all the way. Yes...I loved your bicycle note as I have for some time now been hankering for a Honda Ruckus or a 700W electric bike with fat tires. But those unfurtnately for now are clearly on the back burner and a wish for better times to come my way. Thanks again for your advise and care!

Few days ago I had some fun on bicycle. I went 18 kilometers around the city. At two points I managed to reach 40 kmh (roughly 25 mph)and it felt odd on bicycle. In car 40 kmh is nothing, but on bicycle it feels like you are driving a Veyron at 400kmh (roughly 249 mph). And despite car guys saying that aerodynamics start to matter at 100kmh, I found out that at 40 kmh on bicycle there's a lot of air resistance that you must beat to keep going fast. I also found out that at maximum gear (which form me is front 3 and rear 8) even at ridiculously fast cycling, it can't go faster than 36 kmh (roughly 22mph). Anyway, if you have some long local hill, bicycling there could be a lot of fun. Perhaps you will reach even more than 50 kmh (roughly 31 mph) down the hill. It would be pretty nice to go faster than cars.
