I think GPUZ 2.40.0 is still reading mem clock wrongly (or less wrongly compared to previous version), GPU clock looks okay, but the massive VRAM usage for RE Village is a bit of a shocker for me, >14GB is a tad much, isn't it? Or, is GPUZ reading that wrongly as well...this is after an hour of RE Village. Do note the massive amount of VRAM used, likewise for screenshot below (can't recall what game I'd been playing though).

Below is a GPUZ 2.38.0 screenshot of my RX 6900 XT, do note the ridiculous mem clock speed, but still not as bad as Kabouter Plop's mem spikes though.
The overall memory usage is deffo incorrect, as in actual on the spot usage, after a while mine says 20GB usage on desktop without anything in the background. It loads up bit by bit and does not drop until a restart, max I saw was 34gb :D . I guess its actual mem usage plus what windows caches.

Speaking of windows, dying to try out Win 11, especially if it has the Auto HDR feature which was delayed for Win 10.

I think my 6900 XT is killing it self cos i can easily cause TDR by going into valheim in vulkan and playing video and it will have driver crash within 10 minutes every single time consistently with memory peeking at 7,5 ghz no driver clean install seems to fix it.
Factory reset chosen standard profile not set framerate target and vsync on this time and did not set radeon sharpening globally or in valheim no driver crash so far for 20 minutes, pci-e set to 3.0, im probably gonna try set my usual settings except pci-e 3.0 and see if i can cause it to crash again and try narrow down exact reason it crashes, cos if never had crashes while multi tasking and playing video before, except synology surveilance station live view consistently crashes driver almost even without playing games.
Crashing with pci-e 4.0 and far less or not with 3.0

Hey all, got my MSI Gaming Trio X 6900 XT yesterday. I had a Sapphire Nitro + OC 6700XT briefly but before these I only had Nvidia cards for the past 10 years. Is it worth it to OC this card? I use this with my Samsung Odyssey G9 5120x1440, gaming a few hours a day.

This is what I have done for now:

Welcome to the club :)

First of all, I would suggest that you use the Amd Software (performance -> tuning) utility, I heard that some people had issues with Afterburner, aka causing weird glitches, might or might not be the case for you. I know that coming from years of using Nvidia cards, Afterburner is the tool to go to, but for AMD cards their own software is in some ways more flexible for OC.

Secondly, for the 6000 series, if you want to OC it and play a bit with it, there are some simple rules for OC-ing with the Amd software, as in, setting a minimal and maximal frequency with a difference of 100mhz between them (for example 2500mhz max, 2400mhz min), and for starters always keep the voltage at is max setting to test the OC. As for memory, my advice would be to not go over 2100mhz, it seems that that is the max it can run stable and without errors, you might get it to run above 2100mhz, but that will most likely cause performance degradation.

One last thing, you can actually increase the power allowance over what Amd allow with the MorePowerTool from Igors Lab if your cooling can keep up with the extra power, can give some nice extra performance boost.

Enjoy your new toy :D

Auto overclock of memory is misleading unfortunately.
I tried if myself. It set mine to 2180MHz but my card actually doesn't work on that.
The FPS actually drops. :wtf:

My card actually degrade performance if I even OC memory to 2050MHz.

I saw the videos from Buildings who measured voltages with oscilloscope and according to him one of the reasons is that unfortunately this time around AMD didn't do good power supply filtering on reference design. :shadedshu:

Most of non reference cards are actually copying reference design and extending it with some phases but they didn't improve on power filtering.

Buildzoid added many capacitors and was able to reach stably 2180MHz on memory of 6900XTU Red Devil Ultimate.

According to him, giving more voltage to memory does not help.
He tried it with EVC2 I2C hardware mode to increase the voltage of VRAM and also to reduced the voltage but best results he got was by just filtering the VRAM power supply with more capacitors rather than increasing memory voltage.

Degrading performance for me even for 50MHz OC.

If voltage is not clean when you OC then the voltage ripple increases because of higher current consumption that gives even more noise on power supply which leads to more noise on data lines and that can cause more ECC corrections.

Is there anyway to increase the gpu voltage above the limit in radeon software? I tried with mpt and it didn't really work.

No. The only way I know to do that would be to use a hardware mode with EVC2 I2C controller as Buildzoid does in the videos that I shared some posts above.
There is a pin header on the GPU as Buildzoid showed in his videos to solder the EVC2 controller on them.

@turbogear since you have owned both the 6800XT and the 6900XT, if you could get the 6900XT for only 200 Euros more, would it be worth it?

My local Microcenter has an open box 6900XT Liquid Devil for about $1900USD and 6800XT Liquid Devil for $1650USD....

That's a hard decision and not easy to advice.
If you get a 6800XT sample that has plenty of headroom for OC then the difference is not that big to many of the 6900XTs.

Here are my experience with 5 RDNA2 cards.
My first XFX 6800XT reference card which I water cooled was an OC monster and was not far from two 6900XTs that I had in my hand (Powercolor 6900XT Red Devil and Sapphire 6900XT Toxic).
Both of these 6900XTs did not OC higher than 2620MHz where as my 6800XT was OCed to 2750MHz.
Therefore these both had about 5% more performance but consumed about 70W more to produce this 5% more performance.

After my XFX reference 6800XT got damaged with ESD, I bought 6800XT Red Devil but this was a disaster card. It did not OC higher than 2400MHz. If I pushed it to more, it would artifact. I returned that back.
After this I went to 6900XT Liquid Devil Ultimate which was then about 10-12% faster than my old XFX 6800XT as it could OC to 2750MHz as well.
Here also the drawback is that my Liquid Devil does not OC at all on memory.

So as a conclusion, it is really hard to advice as all depends on luck.
If my XFX 6800XT would not have got damaged, I would have kept it and did not go for 6900XT Liquid Devil Ultimate as that was really a great card that OCed to 2750MHz with max power setting of 325W on GPU Core where as my Liquid Devil is set to 415W GPU core for 2750MHz.

Very much agree with all what Turbogear said, one thing though, for only 200 EUR difference I would get the 6900XT, the normal difference between MSRP's would be 350 EUR, so 200 difference is nice :)

And getting the 6900 XT would also basically negate the chance of getting a crappy clocking 6800XT or a crappy clocking 6900XT, even a crappy clocking 6900 XT would be good enough vs a excellent clocking 6800 XT.

WOW, you are going to beat my Liquid Devil if you keep pushing.
What magic did you do? :D

I assume you tuned the memory and CPU.
I have seen post on Guru3D where @spajdrEX got that high score by tweaking his system although the 6800XT in itself is not pushed that much.

Yes I agree to what you said. :toast:
Did not change a lot of things on the CPU, except putting LM on it too, cause why not  and tuning the system memory as much as I could, but its not the greatest kit, can only go 3800mhz 1:1:1 CL16, that for sure does not help the scores. A 36000mhz CL14 kit tuned to 3800+mhz CL14 would surely improve the scores.

On the GPU, I basically pushed it as hard as it can go (2735mhz max core, 2138 max mem), ok, I could allow more power trough it for some extra points, but 370w on a reference card is already too much, though I can bet it can take a couple of runs with 400w, but for now my 3D Mark itch is scratched

tightened subtimings seem to be more important than the tightening of the 14-14-14-14 first four main timings. (not sure if worded it right but you get my point)

I did that, tightened them a lot, but the main ones don't go below 16 no matter what voltage or other settings I apply at 3800mhz, it was never a top performance ram kit :)

… where as my Liquid Devil is set to 415W GPU core for 2750MHz.
Time to replace that Liquid Devil Ultimate with the Asrock OC Formula, which has better filtering. :D

Time to replace that 5800x with a 5950x and that RAM with a 3800 CL14 kit. :D

Don't tempt me  but honestly, not gonna happen, that cash is reserved for a DDR 5 system, when DDR 5 wont be crap :D

Better supply filter but crappier cooling system.
Become limited by cooling rather than with filtering of supply. :D

Buy OC Formula and design my own water block.
I am packing out my Dremel machine. A big chunk of copper is on it's way.

Really tempting but I think I will stick to liquid devil until RDNA3 arrives.:p

To be honest it seems not only filtering that prevents memory to OC well but I think also memory chips themselves. Buildzoid only gained 30MHz with his complicated capacitor mode.

As Buildzoid mentioned in his videos, there are better memory chips with 18Gbps that AMD is going to use on reference XTXH cards which go to system builders but these are not used in other RDNA2 cards.

By the way, those refernce LC cards are going to be limited by thermal design. Using single 120mm radiator wouldn't allow to push it anywhere so high as the hotspot temperatures will go towards 100°C if one pushes for example 420W GPU core power.

Imagine (dream) of a 6900XT custom liquid cooled design with XTXH chip and those 18Gbps memory and a better supply filter design. Those cards could be breaking the records. :D
Maybe AMD is waiting to see if Nvidia will launch 3090 refresh before unleaching such a monster.

Seems legit regarding the faster memory AMD 6900's, every 10-20 extra Mhz provides a boost in FPS, I am still dreaming of a 6000 series with either HMB2e or DDR6X, those would be killers
