Oh dear...

Reports on the New World subreddit indicate that trying to launch New World while using an RTX 3090 will cause it to completely fry, forcing those impacted to contact manufacturers for refunds or replacements. The issue seems to be affecting EVGA RTX 3090 cards more than other GPUs, though it's worth noting that people who use other versions of the 3090 have reported problems with overheating and dangerous power spikes.

One of my suspicion is to hot memory modules on the back side of the gpu. These are know for running hot on 3090. Youtubers has made videos about it.

So if this game heats up memory even more, i can definitely see the problem there. Memory chips goes pop and you have a dead card. Also remember some places around the world, is really hot outside. So that cut be a helping factor to overheat the memory.

As far I have read, it not just evga effected. Other aibs is as well.

there are still people who pay 2-3 grand for a GPU and do not use a custom fancurve?

Whose fault though, card or software?
Good question. I'd say both. Software shouldn't be able to kill a card and also Amazon for putting a card under such undue stress.

So there's nothing preventing the memory on EVGA 3090's from overheating to the point of failure?

No safeguards at all?

Looks like whatever the "lobby" is in this case is ignoring vsync and that spike in FPS is burning something out. That sounds like it falls on amazon more than EVGA/NVIDIA imo, something in the engine they're using is ignoring FPS limiters. Definitely something that should have been easily noticeable in QA but, what game company does real QA anymore. Forget microtransactions, being able to easily push out hotfixes via launchers did more to kill quality.

Also sounds like a bug that would affect any card, green or red. 3090's might just be running super hot to begin with and not leave as much wiggle room.

I just remember that EVGA decided to put fuse on each of 3090's PCIe power rail that blow at 18amps, sometimes the power balancing could not react quick enough and would overdraw from one PCIe power rail that blow the fuse.
Users already report that the fuses on their EVGA 3090 FTW3 blew up with 520W BIOS, so yeah this is just kinda bad design choice with EVGA, though EVGA could just fix these card in a second.

This seems extremely likely.

interesting theory. oddly enough I always cap my fps at 162 on my 165 fps monitor, through nvcp or through rivatuner. at the moment i use rivatuner because through nvcp doesn't seem to work for all games.

It's not even the first time with the Ampere FTW3 cards! If it's the same thing that was causing the card to brick itself when playing Halo or LoL a few months back, it's because the power delivery on the card is bad and allows for excessively high voltage spikes in lower load situations. Someone mentioned in that thread that looked like the FTW3 was switched from 2x8+1x6 to 3x8 late in development which might explain some of the weird issues (especially since the XC3 doesn't have them).

so I am guessing founders edition cards would not be effected by this game? only custom models where other engineers are not as competent as direct nvidia engineers? or am i understanding wrong?

You can cap the max FPS using nVidia's control panel in 3D settings. Why not using this ? Especially when you know that a lot of games don't have a FPS cap feature and you can hear your card working for nothing in the menus of many games.
