Please help a noob out…forgive me if in the wrong forum. I just need to get input.

I am new to computer builds. After 20 years of college and career I decided to get back into desktop gaming. Out of the game this long, I need advice. I’d like to be at or around $1,500.00 for the tower only.

I have done a ton of research. But it’s time I ask questions. I could attempt to build one but due to parts not being available and insane pricing, it doesn’t make sense. I put these builds in picker and NZXT costs $400 more and the Alienware actually came out just at or below…but I laid out the cons as to probably why.

I play RTS and sim games, with a little dabbling in FPS. I want a build that will be solid for the next 5 years. Solid, not amazing. Hoping to take advantage of SAM, that’s important.

I will be using on 1080p, 144/240 MHz monitor and I do not plan to go 4K for the next 5 years at all. I do not want any lag or frame rate issues when I build massive cities/armies etc., period.

It has come down to these two models.

Build 1:

NZXT:

Case
NZXT H510
CPU
AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-Cores 3.7GHz
GPU
NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX™ 3060 TI - EVGA FTW3 ULTRA GAMING LHR
Motherboard
ASRock X570 PHANTOM GAMING 4
RAM
Team T-FORCE Delta RGB 3200MHz
SSD
Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB
CPU Cooler
NZXT Kraken X63
Power Supply
XPG Core Reactor 850W Gold
Software
Windows 10 Home
Service
Standard Service (US)

Price: $2,050.00

Pros: Easily upgradeable, better/non proprietary motherboard, slightly better quality of products, ideal cooling case.

Cons: $400.00 more than Alienware and PC pick a part for same essential components, smaller power supply for further upgrading, payment up front.

Build 2:

Alienware R10:

Processor
AMD Ryzen™ 5 5600X (6-Core, 35MB Total Cache, Max Boost Clock of 4.6GHz)
Operating System
Windows 10 Home English
Video Card
NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 3060 Ti 8GB GDDR6
Memory
16GB Dual Channel DDR4 XMP at 3200MHz; up to 128GB (additional memory sold separately)
Hard Drive
1TB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD
Chassis Options
Dark Side of the Moon chassis with High-Performance CPU Liquid Cooling and 1000W Power Supply
Wireless
Killer™ Wi-Fi 6 AX1650 (2x2) 802.11ax Wireless LAN and Bluetooth 5.1
Keyboard
Multi-Media Keyboard
Mouse
Optical Mouse MS116AW
Base
Alienware Aurora R10
Driver
Wireless Driver for Killer 1650 Card

Price: $1,750.00

Pros: Matches pick a part PC pricing, no interest payments, higher PSU for upgrades (but unknown quality wise), comes with keyboard and mouse I can sell - small plus.

Cons: Harder to upgrade due to case design, poorer air circulation, unknown motherboard (support SAM? Conflicting reports).

Warranty: NZXT is twice as long, but reports say Dell is more responsive.

I am leaning toward the Aurora but I don’t want to be stuck with a motherboard I can’t upgrade or poor mobo/PSU that will crap out before 5 years and I heard changing the mobo is a pain in the R10. Also don’t want it to overheat (don’t think this will be an issue even with poor flow from crap Alienware casing).

I am more concerned about VALUE than initial costs.

As I said I want a solid build for the next 5 years. I want great, smooth gaming on high (not ultra) for all games. I do not plan for 4k/1440p gaming, 1080p only. I want to be able to take advantage of SAM. I will only upgrade essentials in the future - NOT a complete tear down. No overclocking.

Am I on the right track? I am new so forgive the questions this is a big investment. Which would you choose?

Both are pretty bad the NZXT BLD is the less terrible option though even at it's 400 usd premium.

NZXT. Nothing in it will be proprietary so that's an instant win for it.

But holy shit, the prices on both are TERRIBLE

I would much rather do this than what NZXT is asking. I did this in 3m sure others could come up with something even better.

You can grab windows 10 key for about 10 bucks typically.

I appreciate the replies but with the prices and lack of inventory, what exactly do you guys suggest? Building it myself with those components is importable unless I want to pay a scalper $800 just for the GPU. Is there something I am missing? Or are you guys just referring to the market? Which unfortunately there is nothing I can do about like some secret way to get a better price?

I mean building it myself will cost about the same…

Even with scalper prices you can build a better pc than what NZXT is selling you for around the same price.

A couple comments. Contrary to what many want us to believe, OEM coolers today are very capable at keeping the CPU they come with adequately cooled - especially in a properly cooled case. That CPU comes with a capable cooler so you can save some money now buy not buying an aftermarket cooler. If you want to upgrade to an aftermarket cooler, you can always do that later on down the road after the budget has been replenished.

1000W PSU is WAY WAY overkill! Even that 850W is WAY overkill. If you use a good PSU calculator, and IMO, the only good one is the OuterVision PSU Calc, then as you can see here, you could easily get by with a good 500W supply. And I even padded the results a bit more by increasing CPU utilization to 100% and computer utilization to 16 hours/day. Note I would recommend 600 - 650W to allow for future upgrades and additions.

If you look at the PCPartPicker link oxrufiioxo included above, they also noted your demands are no where near 850 - only 419W.

And FTR, if me, I would use the money saved by using the OEM cooler and a smaller PSU to get rid of that slow, clunky, big, slow, heavy, power hungry, slow, noisy, poor performing and slow hard drive and buy another or bigger SSD. Did I mention hard drives are slow?

Thanks for the reply. The Aurora is either 550 or 1000, that’s why that is there. For some reason dell does not offer what I’d like, 750. I could go lower with the other option but it only saves like $20.00 so I figured 850 for better upgradability but yea they’re both overkill.

As far as the hard drive, they’re both SSD, they’re slow? Which one are you referring to? The Aurora?

If I remember correctly neither offer dual SSD, just one or a HDD and SSD. And NZ states they will put operating system on the fastest storage which for me defeats the purpose of considering dual, especially because it will be so easy for me to throw another 1TB SSD on there.

I read the Samsung Evos are decent though…but I admit I have no put much effort into SSD research.

Never.....ever, ever, ever....buy Alienware aka Crapware. It's literally nothing but overpriced garbage.

Go with the NZXT, if you must.

Except it is not.
Also cheaper...

Right, and why do you think it's cheaper? It sure as fuck isn't because it's built with quality and/or upgradeable components...

Alienware is on all kinds of levels of bad one they sign you up for a warranty thing without you knowing on their website and the option to not get that warranty thing is all the way on the bottom of one of the pages you configure the PC on when ordering if you buy one from Dell directly and 2 if you don't have the one with the AIO in it, it will instantly overheat as soon as you boot a game on it

My thoughts on the second video, it comes off very bias. Couple flaws here.

There is the standard warranty ‘included in price’ that is automatically selected (can’t undo it). Least on Dell. It doesn’t add to price. Not sure what he’s referring to. Yes companies are shady shoving up sells in your face, but it’s simply being smart enough to get around it is not something I’d struggle with, personally, or see any reasonable person not circumventing. If upselling knocks points off, all companies are doomed. It doesn’t really need to be mentioned. Move on.

Also, according to the MSRP of the video card, dell is not gouging. The build I posted comes out to about $1,650.00 before tax, less than PC picker with MSRP price on that GPU of $400.00. At one point was Dell gouging? Maybe that’s what he is talking about I haven’t kept track, but as of now this isn’t the case.

95% of that video was about the cooling. And yes it is a shame they would just stick a shitty air cooler in there. This was my main concern along with the motherboard and casing. Valid. I wonder if the liquid cooling model would be a different review, I’d wager no, due to bias.

In the end the reasons not to buy are if you are easily sold stuff you don’t need, and the crappy cooling.

While the concerns are valid, I really do not like bias content, it’s really hard to take seriously with snarky comments and all - it’s discrediting. Let’s remain objective.

Since the main and really only complaint was cooling, I would be interested in another review and testing with the liquid cooling offered by dell added. Anyone dropping 2k should know that will need liquid cooling for ideal temps. It’s shady and stupid to offer that horrible fan to customers sure, but it may be just as stupid to not research at least enough to know you’d need something more efficient. This along with the warranty debate, I mean at some point it falls on the customer to use their head as well. My 2 cents.

As far as the hard drive, they’re both SSD, they’re slow? Which one are you referring to? The Aurora?
Sorry - the second computer says "hard drive". My bad.
You almost had me here, but Alienware? properly cooled case?
:( Ummm, I don't know what you are talking about. Please don't read into comments things not said.

No where did I mention Alienware. And to your comment, no where did I say any Alienware case "is" a properly cooled case.

What I said I still stand by. OEM coolers are more than adequate for the CPU they come with - in a properly cooled case.

Some common sense needs to come into play here. Neither AMD nor Intel want their customers to be unhappy. That's bad for publicity and bad for sales. And neither AMD nor Intel are in the aftermarket cooler business. So why would either include inadequate OEM coolers that would only make their customers unhappy? They wouldn't.

As for Alienware (or whatever brand you want) PC cases not providing proper cooled? Again some common sense needs to come into play. Its a factory made computer! Factory made computers, especially from the major brands like Dell, HP, Acer, etc., are full of cost cutting, proprietary compromises. That's why many, if not most of the regulars on this site build our own computers.

Now, to expand on my original comment a little. It is important to understand it is the case's responsibility to provide an adequate supply of cool air flowing through the case. The CPU cooler need only toss up the CPU's heat into that flow.

Who is responsible to ensure a case is providing proper cooling? The user! So if a case only comes with 2 x 120mm fans pre-installed, just as an example, and the CPU is not being properly cooled, it is up to the user to add more case fans, swap in better case fans, or clean out the heat trapping dust, or buy a better case - or all of the above!

One notable exception with OEM coolers is when doing extreme overclocking. An OEM cooler may not be adequate in that case. But then most CPUs that allow extreme overclocking don't come with OEM coolers anyway.

Edit comment: Fixed minor typo (missing word).

Fair enough.
Having dealt with my share of OEM computers I'd generally agree - they're usually competent enough to handle a 65W part, which is what they usually ship and also adequate for their target audience.

In any case, the problem with Alienware is that for some fucking reason some fucking retard at Dell decided to throw all accumulated case design wisdom away and make a fucking ugly novelty case because, why I fucking can, DUH! (And then stuff it with high power-consumption parts.)
Suffice to say, there is a reason why computer cases look the way they do.

Congratulations, you're the 1% who actually bother with reading through the fine print and not let Dell slip you in a subscription. Reviewing the default choice (w/ the pointless subscription 'warranty') is a valid one, and not bias.
