Business is booming, ad revenue is up, and I feel like giving back to the community, while boosting the forums at the same time. That's why I've been working on a system that will reward forum activity.

This is not live (in a sense that you can win something this week :) )

Thoughts? Yes, abusers (i.e. spam for postcount) will be excluded from the system.

Obviously the prizes can and will be adjusted, the goal is having some "base" "immaterial" reward that can be transferred easily, plus physical hardware from time to time. Could be review samples, or provided directly by mfgrs. But global shipping (logistics/cost) complicates that.

I also have vague plans for a "TPU Gold" badge that's worth a lot of tickets, that members can award to other members, for great content. But that's not mature enough, so let's try to focus discussion on the current idea.

I like the concept, and will try to keep my posts worthwhile so as to earn my tickets for my part.

EDIT: This was not intended to be funny, but I guess it is? I do try to create content for TPU and I try to keep it useful. I host a few projects here (My bios mods, CryptoMiningScreenSaver, UnityAnalyticsKiller, etc). Maybe mods could tag "useful" threads to earn tickets or something? Just a thought.

Yes, LQ (never liked that system as some LQ reports seem personal rather than objective) and postcount spam is excluded, but I'd imagine this is going to encourage a wide gulf of less-than-quality content that falls into a grey area...I've always been more active on TPU than all other forums combined because of quality forum content.

I'm sure longtimers with integrity will continue as we always have but I'm just not sure an expansion of LQ reporting will end well.

Coincidentally I was just looking at the Patreon page when you posted this. I should really get on top of that.

great idea, i can add that to user profile settings

but I'm just not sure an expansion of LQ reporting will end well
i dont think we need LQ reporting. should be easy for mods to identify people spamming out posts for tickets, we just exclude them for a month and see what happens next. if that's just their writing style they will continue as before, while excluded, and that's probably ok, if they suddenly improve and post good content, win-win

From what I have seen and remember free stuff like this (especially when high-value prices like a GPUs are involved) tends to bring out the worst out of (some) people. And the number of abusers is usually quite sizeable.
I really don't believe something as easily manipulated as the post count should be taken as the metric here.

any suggestions? (that doesnt require us to hire an army of content inspectors)

Right off the bat? Seniority. That is something you basically cannot manipulate. However, it does bias heavily towards the veterans ...

EDIT: It would open up a grey-/blackmarket of account sales though - This really does open a whole can of worms that doesn't really have a solution. Honestly, just doing weekly/monthly raffles where one can signup for would be the best and most fair idea imho.

Like counts will be abused by people grouping up to become like-gangs, liking each other's content

Maybe likes could be part of a more complex formula to calculate the ticket count?

btw, everyone has seen the posts -> tickets formula? at the bottom of the page, there's a link to a chart

Could take like/reaction counts from different users (more resistant to manipulation), or something like that.

EDIT: Yes, I have seen the formula and how it DRs past a certain point - in a vacuum this is a great idea ofc but in reality all it does is create a spam of idiots with alt accounts and alts of alt accounts, of which undoubtedly most (but unfortunately not all) will be caught, but the thing is - all it does is create extra work.

alt accounts and alts of alt accounts
we already monitor new accounts to fight spam, i.e. all new posts go to a manual approval queue, etc.
we also have several systems in place to detect duplicate accounts.
of course with enough investment this can be circumvented, like any other system. but is it be an issue if someone makes two accounts and posts good content with both of them?

[ ... ] but is it be an issue if someone makes two accounts and posts good content with both of them?
Of course not. As someone who's run forums myself before, my take's always been quite relaxed when it came to that and basically as long as it's not abusive, I'll let you be.

The thing here however is, this system is designed to have a giveaway on some kind of meritocratic basis, yes?
My experience had exclusively been that for each automated system like that there are like at least a hundred idiots trying to find ways to defeat it - undoubtedly most of them fail, but they still create a hassle for the administration nonetheless. However, invariably some of those will succeed, and in general these are very poisonous for a community.
My advise therefore is to just scrap the idea of such an automatic system altogether and hold giveaways the old-fashioned way, I mean heck TPU's already doing those, no? ;)

But yeah, jm2c. Maybe I'm too old, jaded and just rambling now for I have seen the inception of (internet) things ...

You also forget to state that having alt accounts is against ToS and will get you banned if caught.

Might be an interesting idea, but there are certain members whos post counts are always very high, so winning by post count could mean they win all the time. Also having members vote for each other is so open to abuse by members voting for friends and having nothing to do with good posting. Having hardware prizes will make the abuse even more cutthroat imo.

Imo W1zzard, you should decide if anyone wins, maybe in combination with mods input. This way people will tend to play nicer with each other so as not to be out of a chance of winning something.

i agree with this
Like sometimes people will Rank up like tons of pots in spamy argument
and that doesnt feel like it shouyld be countoing towards winning

so winning by post count
it is not #1 wins, but random draw, with your chances increasing the more tickets you have. there's a formula at the bottom that converts posts to tickets, with diminishing returns.

for this week you have 17 posts = 16 tickets, i have 43 posts, but only 26 tickets.

I know you are trying to find a way to give back to the community and boost the forums as well but basing it on posts count could undermine what you're trying to accomplish. I think the word will get out that you are giving away some nice hardware here and who knows how many people will show up and start posting. You can't really set a limit on tenure either. Twice I have seen here a member with 10 or more years membership making their first post. There are probably many lurkers out there that have been a member for quite a while but just don't post.

There are probably a hundred ways to increase post count while not appearing to be spamming for a chance to win prizes. One comes to mind right away. A guy that asks a question about whatever the topic is. A moderator looks at it but can't know whether the guy is really curious or just trying to up his post count.

Right now there is probably some average amount of posts that moderators have to look at daily and possibly scrutinize for spamming or being off topic but what's going to happen when there are hundreds more posts every day for moderators to have to read and consider?

why is that a bad thing?

A guy that asks a question about whatever the topic is.
Which is what forums are about? I do get your point though. Some random dude showing up and making 10 question threads will obviously raise red flags ^^

but what's going to happen when there are hundreds more posts every day for moderators to have to read and consider?
I'll send them more graphics cards as appreciation for their service :D
