The Asustor Drivestor 4 Pro AS3304T isn't quite as affordable as the DS420j, but compared to the latter, it most notably has a 2.5 GbE port, twice the RAM, and storage expandability through USB 3.0 ports. However, don't expect transfer rates over USB 3.0 to be high, and the weak CPU will also set performance limits.

If I had to choose between this and the (AS5304T) if close in price it would be the latter since you can upgrade the ram

This maybe out of scope but I would love to see a review that covers just the OS's and there differences.

The thing is that these operating systems have frequent major updates, so whatever article I do, it will be obsolete soon.

They're not updated that often, there's roughly a major release every 12-18 months.
All the minor updates in-between are rarely all that interesting.
I think just a feature comparison could be interesting, doesn't have to go too deep into everything.
Maybe do an overview at the different software available as well, since this is what I presume you mean that it's can't compete, since QNAP and Synology have been around so much longer that they've built up a more solid first and third party add-on catalogue?
That's also where most open source options can't compete, even though you could most likely make a lot of things work, it would be up to you to make it work.
Then again, Docker solves this problem to a degree.

I can't speak for the others but I have an Asustor nas and I normally see ADM OS updates every 1-2 months. The other suggestions are good.

Updates, yes, but that's the boring stuff in-between major updates...
No-one's going to be looking at those, as it's mostly security updates, bug fixes and minor stuff.
