What are 7.9 cats really worth

Just been perusing through a batch of 3dmark tests I've been running on my 2900 xt @ 847.53/999 (amd gpu tool showing 850/1007-optimistic as usual :rolleyes:

) and 7.9 cats are lower in 3d03 and 3d05 than 7.8 ...........any one notice that???? However 3d06 is better with the 7.9 cats....

Strange.......'cause the 7.8 cats were definitely a step ahead.

Hmm .... I haven't noticed that.

I bought my card for games, not benchmarks. I only ran 3DM06 twice since buying the card. Once @ stock, and once @ 858/999. Got about 11,200 overclocked on catalyst 7.6

My side 12469 on air with the 7.6 cats; 12528 with 7.8; .......and 12608 on air and 7.9.........(best score:12805 on air but CPU bumped to 3.7 gHz (370*10))

But my point was on lower tests: 3d05 and 3d03 get lower scores strange???!!! Well I'm not gonna worry about it and wait for 8.0......

Seriously tho, you do know that the .9 or .8 or whatever corresponds to the month, right? They'll release 7.12 in December, then they'll go to 8.1 in Jan. Next release is October, and 7.10

Does it really matter if such old versions of 3DMark get lower scores? You wouldn't notice with games that were the most graphically intense back then on cards that run the best games now at max.

It's like when Benchmarking sites were still using Quake III and getting 300FPS and deciding which card was better based on that. :laugh:

Yeah you're basically right................but I like the 3d03 tests (old warbird thing

) and I hate seeing a new card losing performance on such an old bench........but...what the heck for me the uber test is: does it runn MY stuff at MAX.......it does thank you

Yeah the B-17 escort mission is a sweet one. But you know games are moving to shaders WAY more than they ever were back then, less texture work more shader work.

Hmm. According to tweaktown, Prey saw a pretty big performance boost (around 14% @ 1920x1200).

For me the Official 7.9's are absolutely crap compared to the Omega cat 7.4's I used previously. (running a X1900XT)

Since changing to the 7.9s (after hearing that they should be used if playing ETQW) I have noticed performance all over the place in QW wheras with the Omegas it was perfectly smooth. (I know there is the FPS cap but the game just doesn't feel as smooth on the 7.9's as it did on the 7.4's)

Also I lost 250 points in 3dmark05.

Finally no matter how much I try to like the CCC I just well don't.

Do you know you can install only the driver, then install ATI Tray Tools, which is what the Omegas have anyway.
