A new satellite, dubbed WorldView I, is to be launched on Tuesday that will provide Google with sharper images for its Google Earth program. Together with the company's existing Quickbird satellite, Google will be able to collect 600,000 square kilometers of high-resolution imagery each day compared to only that amount previously each week.

This will be nice. The only maps I've seen so far that show a current view of my city (Reno), is MSN maps. In google and yahoo, my house isn't even built yet.

I wonder how this will affect areas in the world that do not want to be seen i.e the controversy in India over military bases and other sensitive spots in their country. This is almost prime for a U.S. government intervention should they find it necessary to hide Area 51 still lol:laugh::laugh::laugh:

Countries can tell Google what spots they don't want to be available in high res. But then there are countries like North Korea who just "don't talk", so Google has high res pictures of their military bases :)

Google Maps is fine but, kinda disturbing too, I mean... a company has images of my city, my house, my planet... weird thought.

Google Earth – Learn what’s new in release 4

"For anyone who has ever dreamed of flying..." – New York Times Take virtual tours around the world
It's the universe inside your PC; an atlas, encyclopedia and flight simulator, all rolled into one. Just point and zoom to any place you want to explore. Cities, mountains, and valleys are depicted in high-resolution 3D, along with related information. Or, fly amongst the stars to see planets, galaxies, and nebulae.

Find local information and plan trips
Search for local businesses, and get driving directions. Results are shown on-screen. You can easily layer multiple searches, save results to folders, and share placemarks with others.

Explore multimedia content
Find rich multimedia information from the web community and popular sources like National Geographic. Explore the left sidebar and look for the Geographic Web and Featured Content layers as well as layers for 3D buildings, parks, schools, hospitals, airports, shops and more.

Share information about your travels
Placemark places you have visited, then share them with friends. Google Earth lets you add tons of information to placemarks, for example – photos, notes, restaurant reviews and more. View thousands of such data points created by other Google Earth users, using .KML, the Google Earth file format.

Google Earth Pro

For professional and commercial uses. With Google Earth Pro, it’s easy to research locations and present your discoveries. In just a few clicks, you can import site plans, property lists or client sites and share the view with your client or colleague. You can even export high-quality images to documents or the web. Want to see it in action? Try it free for 7 days

Annotate and visualize

Represent your location-based data using 3D drawing tools, or transfer up to 2,500 locations by address or geospatial coordinates from a spreadsheet. The GIS Data Importing Module lets you incorporate GIS data in file formats such as .shp and .tab. Examples include parcel, demographic, and 3D building data.

Share and analyze

Share your Google Earth views and data representations with your clients as a KML, Google Earth‘s original file format. With your upgraded Pro subscription, you get additional measurement tools (square feet, mile, acreage, radius and so on), so simply select the points on the screen using your mouse and let Google Earth calculate the rest.

Create visually powerful presentations

Export high-resolution images up to 11" x 17" (4800 pixels, sample print - 890k), and use them in documents, presentations, web or printed materials. You audience can come along for the ride as you create your own compressed movies (.wmv, sample movie - 13MB) of the zooms and virtual tours you take in Google Earth.

Useful for many industries

Whether you’re in commercial real estate, insurance or media, Google Earth Pro lets you represent geo-specific information to full dramatic effect. Learn how it’s applicable to your industry.

Optional premium data
Please note: premium data is not available for sale online. To purchase, please call 866-755-2582 option 1 (inside the US) or 650-253-6664 option 1 (outside the US)

• GDT Traffic Counts Data - $200 sample traffic report

How to buy multiple licenses of Google Earth Pro

Call 866-755-2582 option 1 (inside the US) or 650-253-6664 option 1 (outside the US) or to buy individual licenses you may buy online.

Note: Technical support assistance is available (email and chat) during business hours PST. While there are additional capabilities and features available in Google Earth Pro, the underlying imagery is the same for all versions of Google Earth. Try it free for 7 days now.

Google Earth Pro offers the same features as the free release with some added capabilities; some of which include, but are not limited to:
Higher Resolution on Images
Live Website, Email, and Phone Support
Measurement Ability
Ability for Add-ons
GPS Capabilities
GIS ingest - incorporate GIS data in files formats such as .shp, .tab
Movie maker - export compressed movies (.wmv) of zooms and tours
Premium printing - print high-resolution images up to 11" x 17".
Premium data - add traffic counts from GDT.
Costar shopping center database.

The higher res images, are not really that much better than the ones in Plus and
Free. As far as the Support goes, I haven't used it, but it's great to have. Once I
got a chance to play with the Measurement tool, I was hooked. You just click one location, then click another and it tells the distance in Miles between the two. The addon's are pretty good, and I look forward to new ones. I can't really say much about the printing, or the GPS, because I haven't used either yet. I did purchase the Movie Maker addon which allows you to save your searches in video format, that is always a good thing.
