It would prevent soooooo many arguments on these forums if there was a general consensus that a post is bad, rather than a series of back-and-forth “arguments” amongst aggrieved parties as to why it is, much like good posts being affirmed prevent users from contending them.

Having moderated high school and college policy debate forums for many years, where those users actually all knew each other IRL and debated their contentions amongst their peers in tournaments with more qualified judges with transparent values/curricula, I could go on and on about why this feature would prevent a lot of trolling, but I’ll leave this dumb up/down vote “question” system to do the talking for me.

I appreciate that this forum doesn’t want to alienate users/revenue with such a function, but some posts are just bad, misleading, or uninformed, and the moderation here leaves a lot to be desired, regardless if that’s a problem of a lack of time on moderators’ part or a lack of clearly defined forum rules (on those debate forums moderators are elected yearly and rules are debated, which is something I don’t think this forum is ready for).

Hope you will consider; thanks!

Solution
Wow, this really popped off! Thanks to the three or four users who responded substantively with, you know, words instead of feelings. As for the 70+ other negative reacts, well, lol

Don’t worry, no one here has ever hurt my feelings, and I’m not interested in policing conversations (although I am curious about the nazis analogy — huh?) — that’s what moderation is for. I mean, I’ve debated many of you to all ends of the earth, and have had many of my posts deleted as well. Not fishing for likes here (obvs), but if you think I made this suggestion to prevent polite, sometimes elevating to heated/trolly discussion, then you probably haven’t interacted with me. :) No one is on my ignore list because I like the diversity of opinions...

You just explained why such a feature would not work for TPU (or any forum of such a size/structure).
(The threat of) Getting punched in the face is a very good and effective deterrent to troll downvoting.

Those who yearn more power are inversely less suited to use it.

We know about you. You're just another emo with nothing but negativity on any kind of debate on whichever thread you occupy. There hasn't been a single thread you have participated in which you have grown from it. It is always a medium to you for whom to blame. What you consider debate is just pointing fingers.

Normative statements are inherently bad since they are not self-reflective while facts are. You never know who you are criticizing...

I kinda get the sentiment, but this isn't irl and it would prevent nothing. We're not students with an impetus to participate. If it breaks the rules or constitutes hate speech, it gets removed. If it doesn't, why police what can't effectively be and shouldn't be policed? If you don't like it and it doesn't break the rules, then move on? Most users can figure out who the bozo is if the entire thread is just said user monologuing and other users taking the other side against said user - and we already have the laugh and angry emojis.

High school and undergraduate-level "debates" and "discussions" suck a lot of ass when they concern topics in the social sciences. Less debate, more devolving into the usual loudmouth suspects steamrolling everyone else. Ergo, not nearly as superior to your average internet discussions as participants seem to think

TPU tried just this about a decade ago, but it didn't work out well, increasing arguments and drama.

I was initially in favour of it too, but after seeing the results, I don't think it's a good idea. It just gives people more opportunity to be difficult and unpleasant to others.

I agree with OP, a thumbs down makes it easier for people to show they disagree and should prevent petty bickering and to and fro arguing.
It's much easier to dislike and move on than having to read pages of arguments which later have to be removed.

It's a new(-ish?) feature. The OP may select it during thread creation, which enables the up- and downvotes.

See, it would be easier for me to give a thumbs down because I disagree, that way it avoids any pettiness and ongoing arguments.
The up and down vote system is there for the most "correct answer" to a thread, not for liking or disliking a comment.

Turning tpu into a sub-reddit named after nazi terminology doesn't sound like a good idea, as it's been said false information can simply be reported and removed it doesn't need to be down voted into oblivion.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but if that opinion is based off miss information it's better to just be removed than getting some mundane thumbs down.

Votes is the death of discussion.

This. Even copying the 'like' system from Facebook was a bad move in my opinion. It doesn't serve anything but circle jerk. I don't want TPU to be Reddit or FB. I don't want to fish for likes. I sincerely don't care what most people think. Don't WANT to care even.

This whole group hug thing needs to stahp. If you have a point, make it in words, the best way you can. And then its for every individual to have their own mind about it. No need for all this peer pressure built into systems.

We can do with a lot less peer pressure that is reduced to thumb up or down. That's the Roman Emperor way, I thought we had become more advanced than 'live or die'. Because that is essentially what all these low-level votes do. And with that, every forum for discussion becomes simple bread & games.

It happens everywhere. We're steadily losing the ability to express what we really think by repackaging it in icons.

Another analogy is this:
icons in public space. Think of road signs. They have a similar purpose. And they guide you, so you don't need to think for yourself.

See, it would be easier for me to give a thumbs down because I disagree, that way it avoids any pettiness and ongoing arguments.
The up and down vote system is there for the most "correct answer" to a thread, not for liking or disliking a comment.

The whole point is that its not easy. Not easy makes you think twice. How often does it happen to you that you're typing up a hot/loaded sentence and then reconsider? That whole process isn't there when you do it as you say you would.

some posts are just bad, misleading, or uninformed, and the moderation here leaves a lot to be desired, regardless if that’s a problem of a lack of time on moderators’ part or a lack of clearly defined forum rules

Embrace the imperfection of TPU. Its a beautiful thing. You won't always get it your way. And that's how it should be. Imperfection leaves room for humanity and all of its flaws.

Perfection = managing into oblivion. It kills everything thats good in life. Its a reflex we can't seem to stop and keep slowly progressing towards, thinking it somehow makes things better, but it really doesn't. Its a paradox and perfection = zero freedom and total control. The question is who controls things, but its certainly not you. And in the meantime, reality still peeks around the corner from time to time to show how imperfect we really are. An example: viruses that are almost impossible to manage away.

i love people to say thay disagree in text than hit a button and not saying why same with likes but i see likes as a + thing and dislikes can be abused by folks wanting to be a ass. forum= talk and understanding others thoughts in my view.

Eh, I personally never liked the dislike options especially after spending a fair ammount of time on the Blizzard forums/D3 section.
They also removed it by now cause it was just abused to no end and caused a lot of extra drama and negativity.

If I really don't agree with something then I will take a bit of my time and say/post something since this is a forum right.
Don't have to agree with others but I will at least try to write down my opinion and my viewpoint.

In special cases when I know that I would have nothing nice to say I just try to ignore the said post, leaving a dislike wouldn't add anything to the topic either. 'did that mistake once here, got my warning for it and that was enough'

They removed in DH too, after a long and very tumultous experiment.

You know what happened? The trolls that the site got promotion off of got chain dislikes, so the management had to disable it since sellouts got the worst of the deal. Not the people you want to play thought police over...

Benchmark Scores bench...mark? i do leave mark on bench sometime, to remember which one is the most comfortable. :o
why would the OP ask for a system that would be detrimental to him... o_O joke aside,

i prefer having a negative point of view stated in a textual manner rather than emotes ... for positive reaction, yeah no issues...
if i hate, i usually ignore, if i disagree/dislike i usually write and put some constructive point (at last i try) ... not an emote,

point: you can like/agree to a post without explanation, you can hate a post without reaction (emote or explanation), you can dislike/disagree to a post without emote but not without explanation/argumentation.

like here ... i disagree/dislike the idea thus i argument (i could use the "angry" or "sad" emote reaction ... but i am not angry nor sad  )

Nah... it could be used just to put negative rep for an user who you don't like. I see too much misuse potential.

It would prevent soooooo many arguments on these forums
I don’t think that’s a good thing , people have different perspectives in life , it’s through these arguments that we get to see what and how others think , and not isolate ourselves with like minded people only
It can be uncomfortable, but I think it’s healthy , it shows you that others can and do think differently , whether you accept that difference or not is another discussion
