This terminology always confuses me.

I'm looking at AMD's B550 and X570 series chipset motherboards.

Some manufacturers say supports 3rd gen (and later with BIOS update) and others say supports 5000 series.

If I am not wrong the four generations of Ryzen stand as 1000 series, 2000 series, 3000 series, and 5000 series.

So far I haven't found a "Ryzen 4th gen" terminology yet.

So, does 3rd gen indeed mean it doesn't natively support 5000 series Ryzens?

I'm guessing it's going off zen so zen, zen+ and zen2 I believe the ryzen 5 3600 is where zen 2 started so would be considered gen 3.

My interpretation is that some motherboard manufacturers' marketing departments are slower at updating their marketing material than other motherboard manufacturers.

Clearly the B550 and X570 chipsets support Zen 3 (Ryzen 5000) series CPUs regardless of marketing material sloppiness.

Sorry I got that wrong then zen and zen+ are considered gen 1, zen 2 is gen 2 and zen 3 is you guessed it gen 3.

"Ryzen 3rd Gen" does not refer to Ryzen 5000, Ryzen 5000 has a separate sticker. X570 and B550 do NOT support Ryzen 5000 on every BIOS revision.

With later production B450/X470 boards you'd often see "Ryzen 2000 Ready" on the box, with an extra "Ryzen 3000 Ready" sticker tacked on there for a Matisse BIOS.
Same with later production B550/X570 boards with "Ryzen 3000 Ready" on the box, and a "Ryzen 5000 Ready" sticker put on after the fact.
  • Ryzen 3000 Matisse - fully compatible with X570 and B550
  • Ryzen 4000 Renoir APU - iirc compatible with any B550 on any BIOS (since B550 released with 1.0.0.6 I think), and X570 should be officially/fully compatible with any AGESA 1.0.0.6 or later
  • Ryzen 5000 Vermeer - should boot from AGESA 1.0.8.1 onwards, fully compatible with AGESA 1.1.0.0 or later
  • Ryzen 5000 Cezanne APU - should be AGESA 1.2.0.0 or later to be safe, kinda murky, iirc 1.1.0.0 might POST, don't think 1.0.8.1 will
When it comes to Ryzen 5000 support whether Vermeer or Cezanne things get a bit spotty, which is why BIOS flashback comes in handy. But generally nowadays if you buy a relatively popular board, you should be getting new stock. I can't think of any board that is so unpopular that you would still be getting 2019/2020 inventory.

"Ryzen 5000 Ready" should indicate that the board is ready to go with a compatible BIOS and doesn't need flashback, but ime it isn't guaranteed. I had a B550I Gaming Edge MAX board (which logically should doubly support 5000 being even newer than most B550s) that sported the sticker but was not ready for a 5700G, needed BIOS flashback. But Cezanne support did come later, so regular 5600X/5800X/5900X/5950X should be fine with the "Ryzen 5000 Ready" sticker.

I know this, because PCPartPicker warned me of this. That's why I'm even looking into this at all.

I have no intention of getting any older Ryzen CPU, so I am looking into Vermeer CPUs only. Also, B450 is off the table, because 2 M.2 ports is a necessity which it doesn't have.

Didn't suggest that you get B450. Even with B550 there are boards out there that have only a x2 width second M.2 (mostly asrock), so just keep it in mind when looking.

No launch support for 5000 isn't that big a deal. We're late in the lifecycle, so most boards will ship with a newer BIOS. If not, no problem if it has BIOS flashback. And if you pick it up in store, you can always get them to flash it up to a supported version for like $15. If none of the above apply, get a better board.

Just beware that some vendors' BIOS flashback can be very picky. Best to have a USB 2.0 drive to be safe, doesn't necessarily mean a 3.0 drive won't work.

Oh no, that 450 bit wasn't aimed at you or anyone else. Just that a few weeks ago I saw a used system with a MSI B450 Tomahawk Max and a R7 3800x in it. I'd have gotten that if not for the B450 which only supports 1 M.2 drive.

So, I think I found conclusive answer to the question.

As of this time, PCIe 4.0 support seems limited to the 5000 series of processors on AMD's side, regardless of chipset. I may be wrong, but I found that this is true for both the x16 slots and the (primary, CPU-connected)M.2 slots.

On Asus' website, the words "Ryzen 3rd gen processors" are used exclusively for support of PCIe 4.0 devices, whereas on most other manufacturers' websites it's "Ryzen 5000 series processors".

So the most logical conclusion is that they are the same thing. Or Asus might be confusing 3rd gen and Zen 3.

In either case, since I am looking at a 5600x - as long as it has PCIe 4.0 support of some kind I'm golden.

It's super confusing tbh. There was zen,zen +, zen 2 and zen 3 so that makes zen 3 what? 4th gen?

Quite a few motherboards support BIOS updating without a CPU installed

If you want PCI-e 4.0 on 2nd M.2 then you need to buy X570 board. B550 board's 2nd M.2 is PCI-e 3.0. Only Matisse and Vermer CPU's support PCI-e 4.0 on X570 and B550 boards.
Get board with BIOS Flash without CPU feature.

No, I don't.
B550 chipset supports only PCI-e 3.0. Unless you are buying one of those special board which makes primary PCI-e slot x8 and runs M.2 using the remaining x8 lanes your only choice is X570.
Or you already bought mother board then there is no need buy a new board.

I mean I don't care about making the second M.2 slot PCIe 4.0 x4.
