RX580 won't show BIOS when disabling CSM

Hi,

I want to disable CSM, but I'm having issues doing so. When I disable CSM and reboot, I get blank screens for quite a while, with Windows popping up after a minute or two. Any restarts after don't show the BIOS either, and I need to pull the CMOS battery to reset the BIOS. Then, it works again (albeit CSM isn't disabled). I've read that the issue could pertain to my graphics card (ASUS RX580 DUAL-8GB).

Parts:
ASUS RX580 DUAL 8GB
AMD 5 5600X
ASROCK X570 Phantom Gaming 4S
16GB DDR4 RAM

My GPU:
1637713208216.png

(Note that it seems that UEFI is enabled on the card, which is an issue I saw in some other forum posts)
GPU BIOS: https://mega.nz/file/ogoFHaKQ#-Nk0nrvf0ZpzxsTlCZV4etcC36iJNqO8vPDcsKNnEms

I've got absolutely no idea what the issue is. Do I need to flash a different BIOS? Also, since it was mentioned in some other posts I thought I might include this: I'm using two DisplayPort cables to connect my monitor. I've tried HDMI with no success.

Despite showing UEFI, its often not working: you need to reflash your BIOS to fix it

Sometimes flashing the same one from the GPU database works, othertimes you need one thats a close match

I cant provide guides right now, but the list of asus RX580 bios are here (not all will work with your card)

Thank you for the quick reply. I've looked at the link you sent. I assume that I'd be looking at the ones marked with 8GB and Dual OC? How can I verify to make sure I don't straight up brick my card? If it isn't compatible, will the flashing utility just fail? Do I use the latest compiled version?

You need to look for 8GB, hynix memory and also the bios version (that number with ...0000). Does this card have dual bios switch? (probably not, but still worth asking imo, as with dual bios it would be a lot simpler).

There are 2 bioses that are basically identical and should work with your card:

I couldn't locate a dual bios switch (not sure why it's called a ASUS RX580-DUAL though, can't find anything about it meaning that its dual bios)

well, dual stands for dual fan. Ok, so its 1 bios only, i just had some sort of suspicion as there are many rx 580 that feature 2 bioses, and also there are 2 virtually identical bioses for this card in the database.

Ah, alright. Are there any guides on how to flash the BIOS? How do I make sure I don't accidentally brick my card?

That isn't why its called Dual. It's due to 2 fans. You have a bottom rung card.

For Asus ROG, TUF, Dual.

The Verified bios may not have the GOP Fix. Unfortunately users haven't came here with a hynix based bios newer than 2017, 2018-2021 have only been Micron or Samsing.

This is an odd ball bios (Sapphire Modded E366)
2017 03 23

You only have the option of bios date 2017 04 17, outside of that date they are Samsung or Micron Based only.

Look at 2017 04 17 only

Sorry, you've lost me. Are you saying that the verified BIOS builds don't have the needed patch? And all of the other patches are for the wrong memory type?

You mentioned looking at the 2017-04-17 only (plus that one other patch)
Like this one? https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/194592/asus-rx580-8192-170417

What is that other one you mentioned? On the bottom, it says "Asus, DUAL-RX580-O8G, Radeon RX 580 Series, (1340 / 2000)" which matches my card. Is that BIOS compatible?

How do I know if the BIOS has the GOP fix?

I found a tool called GOPupd that seems to be able to patch ROMs. Would this work?

I was able to pass in my dumped rom and it says it added the patch. Should I flash this?

There is quite a lot of compatible crossflashing with RX 580 cards, the problem is they come in a few varieties - Polaris XT, XTX, and XL.

You then need matching memory support, and clock speeds your card can run.

You can ID that by your "device ID" iirc

If you get a BIOS that matches your subsystem ID, it should be crossflash compatible (yours is "1043 0521") with Hynix ram
From the Asus dual cards, that would be:

VGA Bios Collection: Asus RX 580 8 GB | TechPowerUp
VGA Bios Collection: Asus RX 580 8 GB | TechPowerUp

If you feel safe with recovering from a bad flash, you can then try cards from other brands with matching specs, and using force flash commands
(I cant help too much with that, others here know more than me: But i have both an RX580 flashed with a new BIOS to fix UEFI, and an RX 470 flashed to a 570 working perfectly here)

Thank you for the reply. Is it possible to check if those ROMs have the GOP fix before I flash? Also, could please answer my question about the GOPupd program?

Thank you again!

In general, the results from GOPupd is fine.
Have been using it a couple of times without any issues.

Nope - I completely reset the BIOS by removing the CMOS. All I change is disabling CSM and it just boots straight to windows.
If you don't want it to risk patch your custom BIOS with EFI security you could use a "half" fix install your AMD driver on windows and use the atikmdag-patcher from monitortests.com reset pc on BIOS disable CSM and make all the changes on bios before you save and reset after all changes... reset pc and just wait for couple seconds the system get on windows with the atikmdag patcher you will get the image normally.

Sorry I'm not quite understanding. What does atikmdag-patcher do? I need to be able to access the UEFI bios when I have CSM disabled

Well the only way you can access your bios with CSM disabled is by using a original VGA BIOS not a modded one any tamper in bios results in losing EFI security and bios signatures... the ATIKMDAG-PATCHER removes the EFI/BIOS features in windows so you can get a image after load the drivers... thats why i say disable the CSM make all the changes you want it before resets it.

in resume if you absolutely need access bios after remove CSM you must need a original bios or a patched one, patching a bios is always risk so be prepared to the worst that why i give you a "half way" fix with the atikmdag

atikmdag-patcher is for an entirely different issue, thats driver patching for monitor overclocking

Motherboard BIOS can definitely affect UEFI issues, but if you're on the latest you can rule that out

I've never used this GOP updater sorry, i got lucky with a single flash to my already existing BIOS somehow fixing my issue

atikmdag is not only for monitor overclock at all... one of the many things he do is patch BIOS signature check the thing i'm talking about to help with the black screen with CSM disable on polaris.

No the issue lies on your GPU BIOS not motherboard as i say you need a original bios without any modification to work on completely UEFI mode or patch the modded bios which is always a risk to do it.

I get blank screens for quite a while, with Windows popping up after a minute or two.
I just noticed that there appears to be a firmware bug with my Asus VG278QR monitor, where if I leave the monitor power on, it often skips the UEFI screens and it then only acknowledges signal, when Windows boot is complete. It appears that turning the monitor off then back on with the power button, is the only fix. Looks like VG278QR monitor users should check Asus' web site.

That's with my Navi10. (Radeon RX 5600 XT) (MSI Gaming X)

My XFX Radeon RX 580, appears to require UEFI mode, causes BIOS misbehavior on pre-UEFI motherboards, especially Asus' socket 1366 motherboards.

Even with a UEFI-BIOS set to CSM, the BIOS never misbehaves with the XFX Radeon RX 580. I only noticed totally abnormal BIOS behavior with pre-UEFI motherboards, so far.

Hello!

I know I come late, but I'm suffering the same sorrow nandexxx had to go through. Fortunately, it seems that this solution worked for him, but in my case, my card has the "1002 67DF" ID and the "1043 03D2" Subsystem ID, and when I go to techpowerup's Bios Collection, it shows a "Warning: You are viewing an unverified BIOS file" message (https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/223505/223505).

Is this safe?
