  • Temperatures are excellent for both CPU/GPU: 30-70*C
  • CPU & RAM are stable
  • only 60~70% of the native performance in games and bench, only got x3500 point in 3mark11
  • the gpu is 100% load while gaming, but the board power is only 130w,gpu chip 80w
  • I've reinstalled Windows after multiple DDU attempts
  • my rig i7 2600,h67,4x4g ddr3 1333,corsair hx520w
what's wrong with my 970,pls help:banghead:

Furmark is a power virus. Avoid the application and stop burning up your card.

Your 970 is fine, push more power through an old card and you're going to give it a faster path to the graveyard. The TDP of a stock 970 is 150W. Not 180, that's OC territory.
I would consider undervolting the card before going further, if you are losing performance there is a good chance that GPU Boost is already protecting the card from exceeding limits.

The BIOS should not be tinkered with see sig.

The overall performance you have right now is going to be limited by your i7 2600 (non K.., so its pretty slow by todays standards) before your GPU most likely and its pretty reasonable to think you lost performance from what you expect to get because of higher CPU loads, which will also give you lower frames and will also reduce the power consumption of the GPU.

TL DR be gentle with this old geezer unless you like buying a card in the current shitstorm.

yeah i have overclocked my 970
core 1557mhz and the mem 4000mhz
there is the bios on 2nd floor
it running at 1557/4000 and 100% gpu load but only about 130w board power and poor FPS in games
if the card is fine, why was it got 3500 piont in 3dmark11 with a 4c8t i7 ? the normal score is about x5000
help pls:toast:

win11 or win7
stock or overclock
all same
at most 130w board power ‎ in games and bench with poor FPS :banghead:

mostly gtx970 i have seen was running at about 160-180w in games:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

Can you post a log of the clocks and temps etc ingame? From GPU-Z or MSI Afterburner or something

More numbers more better

Until then, what I said above does apply. You have an older card. Be gentle on it. You can try this: remove the OC, or halve it, and reduce your Power Target to 95% or even 90% in Afterburner. See what this does to your FPS.

Did you change the GPU bios? If so, revert to stock would be another step.

Try underclocking/undervolting the card. What tool are you using to overclock? Some allow to increase power target but I don't suggest you do that, more power = shorter life for your gpu. Most gpu's have boost clocks in the bios for lower temps they boost to a higher clock, is your bios stock or modded?

Personally I put the power target instantly to the max on any card, that's a different thing than overvolting.

had put to 250w

i reduced power target to 90%, and nothing changed
run at the highest freq, gpu 100% load, but low performance and power draw(board power 120w) in games
i have put power limit to 250w in bios.

Thats not going to change the fact it's crippled by 512MB of slow memory which todays games and software will access more so than when that Gpu came out (970 was a scammers card by ngreedia due to 3.5 being fine and 512 being junk)

Alas I dont do bios mods but I may be able to locate 1 that may work for you.

Give us a GPU-Z screenshot.

And pictures of the white stickers from the back of the card.

Furmark is bad and killed older GPU's by making them draw more power than they're meant to.

Stop using furmark.

Go back to the stock BIOS, put fresh thermal paste and thermal pads on the card and look for issues elsewhere... you could have something as simple as Vsync enabled, an FPS limiter enabled or one of a million other reasons for underperforming (And as someone who still has a GTX970 in a spare parts machine, yes - the 3.5GB of VRAM issue sucks. Medium textures and no AA help)

Would not even touch the cooling solution, it only introduces more variables and risk. First troubleshoot the issue, then tinker with it.
The card is not running in thermal limits at all.

hi man
here is the log

modded
stock or modded bios all same result
You are getting your OC clocks just fine and they are stable at good temps. I think you are cpu limited or you have some sort of limiter on (vsync, fps limit, etc)

I thought Nvidia kinda resolve the 3.5GB vram issue with drivers and optimizations.

I didn't feel it back in the day on my GTX 970 running 1440p maybe I was just lucky.

And then support is dropped and you are SOL. Nvidia does not 'just work' ;)
This is why you dont want proprietary shit or bandaid nonsense in your hardware. This was predicted.

Every good piece of hardware comes to an end some day because of a hardware fault, software or driver is stopped being supported.

There is always a lot of life for even old hardware and it's a shame even it is time to move on for a lot of people.

I just couldn't stay away from looking into that z.rom and found clocks way too high and voltages way too low. So I looked at my MSI GTX 970 latest BIOS and just synced all the clocks and voltages between the two.
So here is the 1L1-like BIOS for your zotac, @Jaaaaaacky, try at your own risk, but it's factory, with the right voltages so power consumption should be higher, which is not my preference though. :)

no boost?
set to high performance mode in nvidia control panel?
Well you have to understand that it is an older card with not too powerful voltage regulation circuitry, so even with extreme BIOS, you would just burn the thing. Take it as it is and be happy it serves you well still.
There is that "Can we have more?" spark but sparks can cause fire. :)

Would not even touch the cooling solution, it only introduces more variables and risk. First troubleshoot the issue, then tinker with it.
The card is not running in thermal limits at all.

You are getting your OC clocks just fine and they are stable at good temps. I think you are cpu limited or you have some sort of limiter on (vsync, fps limit, etc)
These days, all 900 series cards are old enough to have dried out thermal pads. Especially after so many years of GPU shortages people have been running them hard even if they werent mining, simply because no one could upgrade as often or as cheap as they used to

Quite often GPU's dont have user facing VRAM/VRM sensors, despite still being able to thermal throttle so replacing pads can help with erratic performance issues
