Why are old gpus still so damn expensive?

Crypto market crashed,new gpus are slowly starting to go back to their mythical msrp yet i still see old gpus sold for exorbitant prices.
So while i was looking through a electronics store in search for some deals i've found these 2 GTX 1080 Ti's being sold for €800/$840.
That's per gpu. Which is insane.

you got to look better, you can easily find them for less then half of that.

I know,but those are used (possibly mined on) with no warranty.

if you're looking for used cards most likely they have been mining, only alternative is to know the owner. Buy a new one and you don't have that problem.

That's because it's leftover stock at retailer that doesn't care.

a 3060 or a 6600xt will give you about the same performance as a 1080ti

I would confront the seller and ask him why he didn’t reduce prices on old GPUs. Probably he tries to still sell them on original price and doesn’t want to eat the loss.

Ah, good question. Places like Computer Exchange routinely overprice their old crap. I remember back in 2015 or so, well before crypto started affecting prices, that they were selling used 780 Ti cards for the same price as a new one - the exact same model, in fact. That just wouldn't happen if dummies wouldn't buy them at those prices, either. They also don't negotiate on price.

And of course, when selling things to them, they give you a pittance for it. Really awful.

Because of this, I never buy anything off them and thankfully the one near me closed down ages ago, killed off by covid, I believe.

This is very annoying for those of use who know what a used product should cost and would rather not turn to eBay, but are unable to make the required savings.

Well for starters dont buy used from retailers, they have their own margins to put on top.

Agreed - They don't have to fool everyone or even a majority, only enough by the numbers to sell what they have in stock.
