I want to upgrade to Raptor lake considering an i5 12600K smoothly beats my current processor.

Which processor should I target?

Intensive use of gaming and entertainment.

Although it is not strictly necessary for me to switch CPUs as the 9900KS is still a great gaming CPU and could last me another 2 years.

I have a heat problem, now I have liquid cooled CPU and GPU with a 360mm radiator and D5 pump and I have to tell you that during the game the CPU goes up to 70 degrees and the GPU touches 63 degrees. With fans spinning loud.

Maybe I should add a 280mm or 240mm radiator in the case, but by switching to an i5 CPU this problem will not arise.

What you guys suggest ?

Thank you

I think if you held on to 9th gen this long it might be worth holding out for Meteorlake. I ditched my 9900k almost 2 years ago for a 5950X but if I had waited this long to upgrade I would either be waiting for a 7950X3D or 14900k/14700k. Especially considering LGA 1700 is dead post RPL.

I'd also be leaning towards ddr5 some games already show large increases with it and that will only continue to be the case going forward and likely by the time Meteorlake comes out it'll be much more mature with more good options to choose from.

If dead set on raptorlake I'd just wait for reviews the 12700k ended up the best all around with the 12600k being a great value once tweaked but that may be different with RPL.

I personally picked up an LG OLED for gaming over buying Alderlake and it's made a much larger difference than ALD ever could.

I always go for mid-rangers (hence my current 12600k). I find performance-wise I'm missing very little compared to high-end SKUs (nothing I do at home benefits from a bazillion cores) and I enjoy being able to spend $30-50 on an unassuming cooler to get a silent setup.
That said, let Raptor Lake come out, see what the reviews say about it and then decide whether it's worth an upgrade and if you can do with 13600k or need to go bigger than that.

Also, you didn't say what kind of gaming you're into. And that's important, considering how at 4k and high settings, the CPU is pretty much irrelevant.

Also worth considering, I think, is that you'd get a new motherboard. That comes with faster USB ports, faster RAM support, faster and more PCIe lanes, better NIC... Can't say whether that's worth anything to you.

You could benefit from another rad. Might as well if you'll be swapping motherboards anyways. Go 280 if you can fit it.

What rad are you currently running? It looks like a xt45 (my vision isn't what it once was). Have your temps always been this high or is it something that's developed over time?
You likely only need to add a thin 240x30mm rad to get your temps back down if they've always been that high. If temps have slowly come up you have other issues.
Where is your pump/res? Is it mounted on the rear fan mount? And how do you have your case fans set up?
What GPU are you running (on my phone so can't see your specs)?
Something seems off, you shouldn't be seeing temps that high unless you're running a oced 3080/3090ti and your cpu is oced/overvolted really high.

Idk he's cooling a 9900KS and 3080ti with a single rad my guess is he's approaching 500W on that single 360mm radiator. My 5950X/3080ti can spike to nearly 600w at times depending on the game at the wall.

I'm not an expert in open loop cooling but it seems like he'd benefit from a second radiator of any size 240/280/360mm.

It was basically still a 14nm "Skylake-refresh" CPU, albeit with some more cores.

I went from an OC 9700k (old mobo was having issues) to a stock 12600k and can not see the difference in gaming @ 1440p.

that's not a bad temp for the CPU and a great temp for the GPU, I dont see you having any cooling issues.

I would either be waiting for a 7950X3D or 14900k/14700k. Especially considering LGA 1700 is dead post RPL.
I hear the Intel i5-15600k will blow the 14700k away

You stick with midrange gpu the difference are negligible when going with flagship 2017 performance in 2022.

His gpu is around 90% faster than yours at his monitors resolution so his experience won't mirror yours especially if he also uses dlss. A 5950X bottlnecks my 3080ti at 1440p in some games as it is.

I agree it isn't always best to wait but his 9900KS if it's serving him well no need to upgrade only he can really answer that question if it's holding him back. I personally wouldn't do it for temp reasons.

Exactly. He's waited this long, what's another month or two? He'd only be missing the opportunity to pay the early-adopter tax.

No the radiator is Alphacool XT 30 without black paint, it was a limited edition radiator, nothing better than a painted one.

My temps were good before ive added the 3080 ti TUF and put on it the EK waterblock, adding the GPU raised the temps of the CPU a bit more from 62 CPU to 70 now with GPU on the loop,

Temps are going up slowly while i play some games, mostly AAA games.

The pump as the pic is shown is on the left were normally there is the 120mm exhaust fan that every PC Case have. Theres 3x120mm fans from Cooler Master ( very similar to Noctua NF-A12x25 ) pushing inside the case and 2 140mm fans exhausting on the top of the case.

Im running a Asus TUF 3080 Ti with EK waterblock.

Well my PSU's shows how many watts the system is consuming and hits 530 watts with games like Assassins creed Odyssey.

I think the 9900KS is already a hot CPU the factory overclock is constantly to 5 Ghz, a 360mm thin radiator like mine is not enough.

Considering your answers I thank you all for reading my topic.

Im gonna wait for Raptor Lake i5 CPU reviews, if they are not satisfactory I think I will just add a 280mm radiator to my pc and look forward to the next generation of CPUs.

Note that:
A. AMD is making competitive offerings to Intel.
B. The 13600K has a PL1 of 125W and PL2 of 181W - the 9900KS is 127W and 159W, respectively.

I reckon another radiator would be a good move - even if you go with AMD.

Your temps are far below thermal threshold and probably not even throttling. But more cooling is always better if you're set on that route.

Yeah to be honest those chips like the 8700k, 9700k, and 9900k don't get enough credit when looking back in retrospect

Alot of negative attitudes during that era ("intel isn't offering enough cores", "uses too much wattage", "still stuck on 14nm") but reality is here we are 4 to 5 years later and those chips are still pretty good

Your 9900 for example is probably on par with an i5 12400 which is still pretty good

I've got mine still as the daily driver!

With fans spinning loud.
just a single 360 for both CPU and GPU? I'd assume that is your main "problem".....in quotes because loud fans are mostly subjective. I'm pretty sure most would recommend two 360s or at the very bare min for cooling both a powerful CPU and GPU, would be two 240 rads. and your current setup falls short of that.

On a modern demanding game my CPU will reach over that with peaks but avg I want to say is normally high 50s and 60s when playing games. Something like Assassin's Creed Odyssey would peak likely low 80s avg high 60s. Maybe a little lower, but yea it's a demanding game. My GPU also usually tops out at ~63. I overclock the CPU to 5.0 GHz all cores (making it equivalent to your KS model).....I did have it at 5.1 but takes quite a bit more voltage that the extra .01% of performance aint worth the extra 10% heat (or leave voltage a little lower and risk instability). My avg voltage I was aiming for 1.3v with some peaks hitting up to 1.35v (but usually maxes at 1.33v)when doing something that uses the CPU hard, like 100% usage during compiling. my RX 6900 XT can run max OC too pulling just shy of 300W

Big difference to me is I have two 360 rads and my fans spin low the majority of the time, quiet operation was a focus on my setup. I even use fan stop for no noise at all! Of course that is only during light work. When gaming they ramp up accordingly to temps
I think you need to introduce another rad into your setup if you wanted to be able to run your fans at slower speeds
Otherwise, I don't see a "problem". Temps are fine....it sounds like you're just annoyed by fan noise. Which is certainly related to having less rads than recommended, but could also be the fans you're using. If you're not happy with them, consider a new fan set that is geared towards quiet operation if reducing the noise is your main goal.

About the main point of your thread, upgrading. My advice is upgrade if you need to, not if you want to. Unless you just need a 2nd or backup system, why upgrade if the current one suits your needs? I use my system for gaming as well, but also as an audio workstation. It suits me still so I don't feel any desire to upgrade. I get what you're saying, you can get a CPU that doesn't run as hot and actually performs better than your current one and that is all good.....but do you need it? What more would it let you do? If you wait until you need the upgrade, which might be say another two gens from now, when I suspect we would start noticing some CPU bottlenecks in games, maybe now it doesn't do everything you need it to and upgrading makes sense.....if wait until you need it the CPU models will be even more capable giving you the option to buy cheaper models or still go for the same price bracket and get that much more of a powerful CPU. That's my philosophy on how to decide when the right time to upgrade is. For reference, I was using a Xeon X5690 prior to the i9-9900K, they are a decade apart in release and I got the i9 practically just before 10th gen released, which meant I got it cheaper than expected.

Mate .. Bud .. Fründ.. it all comes down to what resolution you play in.

You will not "feel" any difference in 4k.
Blind test 36ns latency ddr4 vs 55ns ddr5 and try feeling a difference. And fps wise it can (for now and your gpu) be overlooked.

I have a 9900ks, 12600k, a 3070 and a 3080ti.

I went with only 6 p-cores and the 3070 as a silent air rig.
Correctly cheating within bios brings it to 5.4 with 5.2 all core gaming at 36-45c (RIM and ONI). We are talking 66-88 watt here.

Max temp torture testing=88c with a frame already installed AS AN AFTERTHOUGHT.
My 12600k has been bent atfer the first brutal install and does forever have a really, really uneven top side now.

So IF you upgrade, spend a few bucks for a frame as a FORETHOUGHT !

The 9900ks@5.2, since it rests in an apex with n1ce b-die, got mated with the 3080ti in the end as a water cooled gaming rig. 280 +360 aio.
I can run games with less heat than you are generating. Try LLC5 if you have LLC6 now and AC_LL 0.01 with less vcore than you currently use.

I treat my eyes with a 50 inch QN90A in a dark room @ 4:4:4 . Minor bugs included
1000 bucks only at your local stores atm.
So IF you have money to burn, get the 50 inch "A" or "B" only (The VA panel rocks if you are alone, in front, in a dark room. It also has less filters over the pixels than the bigger ones with ads panel)

The 12600k runs silently aircooled with the 3070 as a daily rig.

So get it if you wanna play with toys, like me.

Don't try to get a good reason for buying it if you want to game in 4k since wattage wise you reduce so little that spending it elsewhere comes to mind.

I'm on a 9900KS/3080Ti combo myself on a 4k120 setup. I have no plans to upgrade for at least a year or more. I just don't see the point.
