ASRock brings out the big guns with their X670E Taichi Carrara 20th anniversary edition. Using the same underlying components, the X670E Taichi is ASRock's flagship AM5 motherboard, featuring DDR5, M.2 Gen5 and USB4 support. Equipped with a 24+2+1 phase 105 A VRM, it comes ready for some serious overclocking adventures.

Great review as always. Bummer they wouldn't even give you a price range but I'm gonna guess 600 usd ish +/- 100 usd.

Not bad for basically their highest end motherboard. (Depends on how much Aqua is)

For sure it seems only Asrock and Gigabyte boards are ok ish price wise. MSI and Asus boards are pretty ridiculous.

Never thought I'd see the day where a Taichi board was more appealing to me than an Ace or Hero one.

That also depends on where in the product stack you go. A lot of the top boards are halo products you don't need outside of LN2 runs or other nonsense. I still remember the sticker shock over my first 300 commercial board, the asus striker extreme, that seems quaint now.

This Taichi board seems pretty nice though so definitely would consider it.

I guess as long as the AM5 board doesn't cost more than both my AM4 boards combined I'm ok with that.

I mean, on the surface its fine, but when you consider that not 4 years ago you could get taichi boards with similarly overbuilt VRMs, but also have multiple expansion slots in addition to the GPU slot, more on board connectivity, and a 10Gbps LAN, for around $330? Yeah, that $530 price is a slap in the face. ANY board over $400 today should have a 10Gbps LAN on it frankly, these prices are highway robbery.

Cost of everything has kept going up. That's the nasty part, I started building in the pentium 2 days. Later I remember the sticker shock and horror of a dual slot 6800 Ultra at like 400 along with an athalon 64 FX cpu and 200 buck board and maybe a raptor drive. With a now quaint 450 watt PSU. Shoot forward a few years and the cost of a 680i striker extreme at 300, dual nvidia 8800gtx at 600 and a core 2 duo extreme along with a 1kw PSU.

And oh what an old time when two molex power connectors on a GPU was frowned on as not being efficient.

They've definitely priced the boards I actually would want to own out of impulse pricing range for me so I'll have to wait for everything to settle down before making a decision on AM5 for sure.

I don't have issues with the new pricing but some of the 500+ boards seem like a much larger rip than others. This Tachi falls into the ok category not great not terrible it looks very nice though so bonus points for that.

I've been completely pried out, I am not paying that much, period. If I do go AM5 it will be at the end of the generation. 2026 perhaps

The dirty secret that's openly talked about but utterly ignored by the "pc master race" is that PC gaming is going to the cloud. It's a done deal. Signed sealed delivered enjoy! You'll rent time on servers. One price tier will be 1080p low or mid details and 60hz. Then you'll have your 1440p mid to high at 144hz tier. Then if you spend even more you'll have 4k 120hz ultra details. You're going to pay 20-200 a month to rent the system depending on the tier you buy into. Then you'll pay for the games as well. But when you lease a game you're going to pay cost depending on the tier of the game. Want higher details, that costs, want a game with a 4k because you are leasing a 4k cloud system great pay more again.

This is the future, ain't shit any of us can do about it. Music, movies, hell Microsoft Office have all paved the way for it. A "desktop computer" you can pay for is going to be tens of thousands and even then you're going to pay through the teeth probably hundreds for your own copy of a game. It's going to be the place of the high six figure to seven figure crowd only. That or get a steam deck and fuck your feelings snowflake.

It won't be consoles that take us down this path it will be the PC that does and then consoles will follow. With portable stuff like the switch being the last to go. One of the reasons the Steam Deck was done now is everyone sees where shit's going to go. EVGA is smart in realizing that eventually all GPUs are just going to be sold in bulk to cloud vendors and the margins on the business have been a dead end for a while now. Everything PC is going to the cloud. That fight is over. You can delay it somewhat buy going mac and console but they'll fall as well. But the PC is leading the charge to not owning anything anymore and renting everything.

Hopefully B650/B650E is decent because if not the diy pc building scene is in huge trouble imo.

$900 4080 (really a 4070 though) we will see what lower tier rdna3/Ada cards look like I guess
$300 basic motherboards
$300 base cpu pricing for AM5
$200+ for some decent ram

It's not looking good for sure.

Have fun trying to send that much data through not city areas. (Along with the numerous problems with cloud gaming.) It's going to be really hard to kill what we already have and people can always bump down the settings.

LMFAO WTAF are you going on about? And how does this, in any way, relate to price gouging?

Patience, board costs will most likely come down in a month or so. The MSRP for the Xtreme is $599.

That's what I sorta figured. I'll likely prioritize a 4090 though at least till AMD releases X3D parts

Tanks for the detailed review. This morning I ordered the ASrock X670E Steel Legend as well as a Ryzen 7700x. This will be my first build since 2012 and I'm really excited but also aware of early adoption problems. Hopefully nothing too serious as it would be a shame and ruin the fun out of it.

Congrats on the new build. Nothing beats tinkering with brand new hardware fresh after it releases.

Actually those Halo boards are for basically nobody.
None of the XOC guys are using those boards, the current record are set on the X670E Gene at half the price of the extreme.
The extra bells and whistles often interferes with BCLK overclocking or strait up just cold bugs. Also pcie 4/5 don't like being overclocked.
Some of the XOC AM4 boards are actually based on B550 for that reason, and for AM5 the new Unify-X and Tachyon will likely be on B650 as well.
The B550 Unify-X for LN2 was like 1/4 the price of the X570 Godlike

So they are going to big business the fun right out of gaming. Cool, I guess I'll need to find a new hobby when that day comes. I have zero issues with essentially leasing games as long as they are reasonably priced. The Microsoft Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is a great example. You get a lot of selection and some great gaming for a fixed monthly cost. The day I pay $200/mo to rent hardware for gaming is the day I stop gaming. For $200/mo, it better include a steering wheel and take me places in RL.
