New gaming rig, tight spot about GPU

Hello guys,

So I'm building a new gaming rig as the current one has served me great during the last 4 years, and I have some dilemmas regarding the GPU, I'm from Romania and prices here are crazy for some components.
I play in 2k, I want 100+ fps in all games for the next years.
I'm planning go build as following:

MB = MSI PRO B650-P WIFI ->> 220 Euro
RAM = G.Skill Flare X5 32GB DDR5 6000 MHz CL32 Dual Channel Kit ->> 220 Euro~
CPU = Waiting for 78003dx next month, but if price is outrageous will go with 7700X ->> 380 Euro
PSU = EVGA 850 GQ, 80 PLUS® Gold, 850W, Semi Modular ->> 150 Euro~
CPU cooler = Arctic Liquid Freezer II 280 A-RGB ->> 130 Euro~
Case = NZXT H7 Flow, waiting for stock availability for Black Matte, but if doesn't show up I will buy White Matte ->> 140 Euro
SSD = Samsung 980 pro 2TB( already have it, gift) ->> 200 Euro
Total= 1440 + GPU ?
GPU
= big question mark, I really want an RTX 4080 but that thing, the cheapest here in Romania, is 1700euro~ !!
there is currently a lot of availability for 6900 XT Sapphire Toxic water-cooled at 900 Euro, which would bring the total rig cost at 2340 Euro. But 6900 is last gen, and I'm planning to keep this rig for next 4-5 years, if possible without upgrades, would it be wroth a 7900 xtx(1400 euro) or 4080(1700 euro).... 1700!!! I just cannot fathom paying 1700 for xx80 card, nividia has gone mad.

So, what would you say, buy the 6900 Toxic at 900, or wait more ? I don't know ...

Thank you for your eventual replies, cheers!
Dorel

4080 is a lot better than 6900 it's worth it if you can find one at MSRP.

PSU is fine, but for that price you could do better, I'd look for a 850 W fully modular Plat/Ti unit from Corsair, Seasonic, bequiet! or another good brand. Check our reviews page. I understand pricing in Romania may be different.

You'd certainly save a lot of money by going with a 13600K/DDR4 Build while having the same or better CPU performance. This would make up the deficit in your GPU budget allowing for the 4080. Would allow for a better grade motherboard too as all of the AM5 motherboards are about twice the price they should be and DDR5 is also expensive. E.g. 32 GB of 3600/16 DDR4 will be around 80 euros, and would perform the same in latency sensitive loads like games.

@dgianstefani Hello,

The PSU is fine, a plat/titan one is 2x or even 3x the price, not worth, the semi-modular aspect is negligible since only the MB cable is non modular, rest are.

I want to go AM5 +ddr5 for "future proofing" I'm already sitting on 9600k OC to 5.0 Ghz and 3600 RAM ddr4.
AM5 will live for many years to come and IF with a big IF, I want to upgrade down the line, I'm a lot safer with AM5

Why not go for a 7900XT ? I wouldn't pay 1700 Euros for a 4080 either, both the 7900XTX and 4080 were extremely overpriced as well when I picked up my 7900XT, it was the only card worth getting.

Hello @Vya Domus, I don't really like the 7900 xt/xtx, they consume more power than RTX cards, basically no RT, and multi monitor power issue( who knows when fixed), would it be worth 7900 xt over xtx ? it's just 150~ euro cheaper but you loose quite a lot of perf, 20%~ ?

whaaat... 1700? why are they so expensive in Romania? Cheapest one in Hungary costs 1380 euro and it's a nice little Palit RTX 4080 GamingPro

If you want RT, which I totally understand, you gotta go 4070 Ti, or wait for 4070 and/or 4060, all three of them will be fine for 100 fps 2k. With the 4060 you might have a little trouble with RT though.

Another alternative would be to pick up a used 30xx card and wait out the economic turmoil

Why not import from Germany and save a bunch of €?

And I'd skip on the AIO, just get a big air heatsink for half the price.

A bit of a misconception here. If both the 7900 XT and XTX have basically no RT, then the entire RTX 3000 series cards don't as well. The 7900 XT and XTX pair compete fairly on par against NVidia's previous gen best.
You are right, I was exaggerating with "no RT", the capability is there, but very weak compared to 4000 cards, to the point that for me would be not feasible turning it on, on an AMD card, yet, too much of performance loss.

Go with the 6900XT/XTX and call it a day
The mental bungee jumping is on this side at the moment :S
The question is, do you think 6900xt watercooled, with OC, would run all games at 2k, for the next 4 years~ ? No RT. of course you never know what might happen, but if we follow general trend ?

No thank you, a proper Noctua cooler is close to the price, and AIO is very quite, been running a corsair H110i since 4 years now, on my i5 9600k 5.0GHZ, and it works like a charm, changed the fans to Noctua though.

The RT works fine, especially at 1440p. Or not depending how you look at it, RT performance is crap on any card. I don't really understand your conundrum, you don't want to the cheaper options and neither the expensive ones.

By the way, good performance for the next 4 years at 1440p 100fps with RT ain't happening no matter how much you pay.

Lovelace cards may become cheaper after ampere stock finishes. It may need another 3~4 months though. Or may be after 4080ti launches, you may find a used 4080.

What silly suggestions I'm giving lol. Can your current gpu hold you up for a bit longer.

Few are the cases where the performance hit on the RTX 4000 cards isn't around the same ballpark (if we look at %) as the hit on the RTX 3000's. Only with DLSS3 (with Frame Generation) that Ada really smokes both RDNA3 and Ampere. And while I do agree that the Radeons usually suffer more with RT (higher % drop on average, very dependant on what you'll run) I wouldn't rule them out. Then again, it's your call here.
If you're wishing to not change cards in 4 years while keeping 1440p RT, I'd guess you'd really need at least a 4080. Turning RT off, I think the 6900XT will hold its own just fine, but it's a bet on whether nobody making an absurdly demanding game or application that would bring it to its knees. And that could also happen to even a 4090.
