i was just wondering what would perform better for the money

for example a single Ati HD2900xt 512 bit 1 gig ddr4 coreclock@ 875 for 500bucks

or two HD2600XT 128 bit 512 gig ddr3 coreclock @ 800 for `180$ each????

The HD2900 is proven to be better all over the web. FTW baby, ftw.

Go for the 2900; you can always add another later.
(BTW SLI is for Nvidia, ATI calls it Crossfire).

Definitely go with the single 2900XT now and then crossfire that card later in the future when games get more demanding.

I feel obligated to mention that doing either SLi or Crossfire is pointless and a waste of money IF and only IF you do not have a high resolution monitor that is at least 1600x1200 or greater in screen size. The bigger the monitor you go, the more GPU power you will need to play games at high or even medium settings. If you do not have a high resolution monitor, a single card will suffice.

If I recall correctly, the HD2900XT is on par with the 8800GTS, but does not beat a single 8800GTX. And a single higher end card will always outperform a dual low budget SLI/Crossfire setup.

Yeah...the CPU would be a huge bottleneck.

2900.... no doubt...

A good set of 2600xt's in xfire score about the same on benchmarks, but will not really compete when it comes to application use.

You may as well, it seems like the 2XXX series was just a "Gap Filler" anyways.:toast:

well its for a new build with a q6600, so i dont think there will be as much of a bottlenecking issue there.

i decided to go with a single 8800GTx....although i cant remember why...

I don't know, depends on how long until they come out....
I'm sitting waiting considering buying a 2900, but now knowing the new ones will be out, even if they are just more efficient and cooler running, thats probably enough for me to wait as long as it doesn't take "too" long.

Yeah, and it also has a Penryn processor with an X38 chipset with 2GB of DDR2. The same system is tops for both 05 and 06. Lets see a score with an 8800GTS/GTX.

http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_2007.html?modelx=33&model1=857&model2=706&chart=297

Out of every random benchmark I chose, the 8800GTX comes out on top.

The 8800GTS 320MB beats it most times as well.

The 8800GTS 640MB beats it most times again.
