Not really insane, it's about what it should cost.

In my area 8 core 5700x has been sub $200 for a while. 5800X3D has been frequently on sale for low 300s. 12 core 5900 has been frequently selling for $320-340.

$400 is really all you can realistically ask for the 5950X. The other CPUs from that socket have been similarly priced and the modern AM5 $400 CPU is a lot faster than the 5950X

Agreed. If it's any higher than $400 then most would just buy the better bang for your buck chips below it (5800X3D if a gamer, sub $200 5700x for overall bang for your buck)

Most people who need those 16 cores for professional use or enthusiast purposes wouldn't drop that much anyways on a 5950X, they can justify just getting the newer AM5 chips.

7900 non-x is 10$ cheaper and better in every way. Sure platform costs are higher but they got a lot cheaper in last months and you still have your upgrade path so I think it's better for new builds. If I were already in a AM4 system I still wouldnt look at this and get a used one instead.

There is more to 5900X and 5950X than just their core count.. with PBO they are the fastest Zen 3 CPUs when looking at peak single core boost. 5150MHz for 5900X, and 5250MHz for 5950X.

Not a great price in my opinion. The 7900X, which generally has better single-thread and multi-thread performance, was $351 on Amazon the other day.
A decent B650 board is $125. Add some cheapo DDR5-5600 and you have a better machine at a similar price. And with an upgrade path in front of you if you grow restless.

Not everyone wants to make that jump and it's cheaper to sell the old chip/stay with the same platform. AM4 is very much still strong.

I snapped one up at BestBuy last December for $500 for my backup pc. This is the lowest discount I've seen to date but I guess it makes sense in proportion to other AM4 pricing that's also not ridiculous at the moment. NewEgg has lesser CPU's selling for much more.

If only shipping to CA was cheap. My R3F with a x5675 is boxed up and been waiting for a home for a while. Been half tempted to keep it and get a new cooler for it.
