Vista causes a 600 point decrease in 3DMark06, why is this?

Does anyone know the exact reason for the 600 point decrease in 3DMark06 scores just because Vista is being used? Also, if its something to do with an process/app running in the background, can this process/app be switched off?

But surely some process causes the RAM usage (if thats what it is) which in turn causes the score decrease :confused:

I'm not sure since I only use Vista for 10 mins, but I think the RAM eater is svchost, so it can't be disabled. I'm not sure, maybe we should compare task manager screens of XP and Vista to see what uses more RAM.

Sounds like a good idea m8. But if its something that can not be disabled, theres no point in trying

Well for starters, I can see vista has loads more svchost.exe's running, and they use more memory than XP. That's probably why.

My vista score is higher than my XP score, overall you should get a much better mark in the cpu test on vista.

Check you've got the latest drivers and patches etc.

Try disabling superfetch, Hookey. It works wonders on how much RAM is being used in Vista.

Thanks, I disabled that when I was using Vista before....I just couldnt remember the name this time lol. Ive disabled it and will run a bench shortly

Sounds like you had problems with XP to me. It's wide known that there is a 400 - 600 point decrease in 3d mark from xp to vista.

Drivers, memory useage, processor overhead, all contribute to losses.

Oliver, sounds like you either changed some settings, or had a driver issue.

No, of course not. Vista is a new OS afterall and obviously shouldnt be compared to the aging XP.
