While the proponents of both the Blu-ray and HD-DVD format would love for you to think that either format is ahead, current data shows that neither side has any major lead on the other. Toshiba has $200 HD-DVD players, which is half the cost of the cheapest Blu-ray player. Paramount also recently decided to "change sides", and is now a proponent for HD-DVD. However, the Blu-ray camp has several million Playstation 3 consoles already sold and in homes around the world. Sony CEO Howard Stringer was quoted as saying that he wished Sony could go back in time, and make sure that instead of this HD-DVD vs Blu-ray mess, there was one universal format.

A single universal format of 20GB per layer would have been best, yes.

But that doesn't matter with the new players that can play both formats.

It still looks like we'll have to buy both a BD drive and an HDDVD drive for our next builds.

It sounds like he is preparing everyone for the good news that after this shopping season, HD-DVD will be on top. There is no way they can compete with sub $200 A3s and sub $100 A2s.

Screw $ony!

Time for a few SONY executives to start falling on swords. If they want to go back in time and change their "position", then they must be fearing a stragetic loss. That's a WIN to HD-DVD in its own right. :nutkick:

No way they can do it? They already are doing it! the fact that the PS3 is in alot of homes and more than doubles the current HD DVD crop proves they are doing well. Best value of BD and Game system is the PS3. Granted, he is right, they should have come to an agreement on one form. However, that didnt happen, and now we have two great formats to choose from.

You mean to tell me they need to outsell HD 5 to 1 (forgot the exact ratio) in order to maintain an even pace? Something is wrong there.

Blu-rays going 5:1 isn't it?

Anyways, the huge problem was that with DVD sony didn't really get much, most of it went to Toshiba. So in Blu-ray vs HD Dvd Sony didn't want to get screwed over again. And here we are...two or three (forget which) years in. And no winner.....so my parents won't buy one until we have a winner which means I have to stick with broadcast and upscaled Dvds. I just hope someone wins, everyone's hurting here....well maybe not the studios.

hard to tell since sony like to use half-truths in the statments (like using shipping numbers instead of selling numbers) but i think blu-ray should be 2:1, but with the hd-dvd group striking hard this season with cheap players and transformers the tides might turn.
