Best motherboards for XP gaming

For setting unlocked CPU's in software, it works wonders.

No one is buying that kind of expensive DDR3 for a retroXP build. DDR3 1600 or 1866 is the best one can reasonably go for these days.
No one, except competitive overclockers, I feel you are correct.

Had some nice Muskin Redline 1866 that was happy 2000mhz 9-10-9-27-36 1T 1.65v. I really miss that particular kit. But Mushkin had more part numbers than you can shake a stick at for ddr3.

^^ Agreed. I have a 2x2GB and 4x8GB kit of DDR3-2133. Former for a new build back for Sandy Bridge, and the latter for when I upgraded it before building a whole new rig on DDR4. I wouldn't try to hunt down DDR3-2400 unless you want to compete or just want the 'best'.

Let me drop this for you guys. Always wanted to play with it

I must admit i have neverv obercloaked.And is it worth paying an extra £2.75 for the i7 950?The other board has no cpu.I could get up to £10 for it on eBay.Of course i want be able ti test it with out a CPU in there.The cheapest X5675 is £7.82 like must X cpus come from China if i went for it now i would not get it for at least 2 weeks.
This is the one withour a CPU.30 days returm.Hopefully the CPU would come before the 30 days run out.But it is from a business seller. “Fully Tested & Working.Has anyone every put a OEM board in a ATX case?If it could be done i would get one of the PC,s Lex sugested.
That was quite a job to do. I should think a Dell would be a lot harder to do with all the proprity stuff and i dare say the motherboard holes would not match up.I have a conector for the power supply so i could use a normal PSU when i had a Dell.Of course you cant put a get a normal PSU in the ones Lex showed me the one i had you had to do a hack to get it there.Needless to say i did not so that.

$2000 ram kit when new? Wowzer.

Is it worth paying £2.25 extra for the board with the i7 950on it ?
As i want be using that cpu but i see i could get up to £10 for it on eBay?
I guess that why not. It's not that much after all.

It's insane that many RAM generations end up up having faster RAM (by pure MHz speed) than the next generation's initial speeds.

Binned Micron D9s. I didn't even know that kit existed lol. Totally not worth the money.

I benched against their 4690K, just a very quick one.
Running 1600 6-8-6 vs 3100 (OC) CL12-15-15 (both at 1.65v)
My advantage is maybe triple channel ram. That's why X58 stuck around for so long.

X58 was goated, and X58 + Gulftown on a R2E is probably about as goated as PCs got through the 2010s if you ask me. I used my i7-990X for almost 9 years before retiring it

*goat = greatest of all time, apologies for the zoomer slang :pimp: :roll:

Me too with my X5690 ES :)

I still regret selling it.

Edit:

The last picture of it :cry:

Yeah, I miss the R2E, probably not ever having one of those again. Some time ago, I ordered an EVGA SR-2 from some guy, but he backed out of the sale and I just gave up. Haven't really played with anything skt 1366 since.

This is how you upgrade the PSU on the HPZ400 i dare say you have all ready done it.Its a bit different to the modal i had where you had to drill out holes to put a standard PSU in ,i think it was the the z440.

Well Sir, I have modified BTX cases on a few occasions. Not too often, but every now and then you need a drill and make some new holes. Put the screws in and be done. I've had one that I recall, might had been a gateway actually that I could only manufacture a way to use 3 of 4 screw holes. I'm also a Diesel Technician and love to weld, braze and manufacture stuff by hand. That includes pouring Aluminum and making my own waterblocks and even a huge Dice pot once. Well, at least when I was 20 years younger or more.

Heres our old ,mate Phil
what do you think of these A li express boards any one tried them?

They work. They obviously don't have anywhere near the build quality of the real deal from back then. But in a pinch? Yeah. Gotta watch out if it has a real X58 or 5520 chipset, though

I wonder if the overclocking features can be unlocked by modifying the BIOS. If not, it's kinda pointless to get one new. He's using 2Rx4 memory. It's probably the 5520 chipset.

I get you there Dr .Dro :) Is it worth paying 2.75 more for a i7 950 on a motherboard ?When i will be buyng a X5675?
I see i could get up to £10 for the i7 950 on eBay ?

I was going to suggest one of those new-made old chip chinese boards, but I didn't know how agreeable you'd be.
This one is similar to the one Phil showed in that video;
You should be able to get one of these shipped to the UK.
Here's a matching CPU, Xeon W3680;
And some matching RAM, 8GB 1866mhz;

These are just examples, but you should be able to find items similar available to the UK if these links don't work for you.

If you can get something for 2.75 and flip it for 10, its worth it... tho the 950 isn't exactly the CPU you want. It's the 980X and 990X, and those are more than just a bit expensive, their Xeon counterparts go for a lot less.

Thanks for that Lex that is a lot mo re than i would want to pay ,plus the fact yiu have to pay custums and VAT.I will go for the. one i mentiond at the beging of this forum post. ASUS P6X58D-E i can either get it with a i7 950 or pay for £2.75 less without the i7 950.I will buy a better cpu than the i7 950 the X5675 which goes for £7.82.

So i have seen :eek: The x5675 is the most affordable for me.:) I can use the cooler shown which i got for a FM2+board which i have never used.
i did not realise at the time it was such a crappy socket.Any way the cooler did not come with the stuff you need for a Intel board ,But i have just found the bracket for intel .

What was the appeal of the X58 platform? I always thought the triple channel ram setup was a bit funky, and the ram speeds were not very impressive yet. Back then I jumped from a P35 with a QX9650 Yorkfield to Z68 Sandy Bridge 2600K and skipped the X58 stuff.

Server platform as a toy, triple channel was wicked. But you needed to be running Hypers. 1600 6-6-6-20 type stuff.. which I have but mailing out to a bud since I no longer have X58.. sad face.

Oh yeah and 6 fast cores when everyone else was using less. A mans CPU the required manly cooling haha.
