It needs to be grounded... is your case grounded... close enough for some, but to be safe, use a washing machine or something.

Personally, I go outside and sit in:

-The garage
-The grass
-The tile floor of a bathroom

I dont think it does that much good, but if you so long as the case is grounded, it's fine.

i havent seen any confirmed case in my whole life where ESD discharge destroyed some components. But yes, any grounded metal will work like your case metal (if you have a PSU installed, screwed in and connected to AC mains)

I have had a case where electronics died from ESD. It was with ram I was holding, just sitting on the carpet and then I put it in the slot, there was a spark when I touched the slot, and then the computer would not boot, because not only did the ram get the ESD, but the mobo too.

Many anti-static wrist straps have removable clips, which exposes a rather large pin. You can then insert that pin directly into the ground hole on a US three-pronged outlet.

Personally, I just put the computer on my ugly wooden table, and I wear shoes. First, I put on shoes, then ground myself on the case, then put it on the table... and start doing stuff.

and anti static wristband is just like a psu relay switch. very cheap, and not needed, however a safty precaution that everyone should take, but in the case that something does go wrong, you'll be sorry that you fried a very expensive component where you could've gotten a $5 wriststrap

All homes here in India are made of concrete and I'm often bare-foot in my room so no ESD problems really.

But otherwise I'd advice this:

Use a tester to check the wall-socket nearest to your bench, if its earth pin has stray voltage or not (just safety)

Extend you anti-static strap's wire into a new male plug's earth pin.

Plug it in and you're good to go! I've heard many people suffer ESD damage to their components. A classic example would be a shopping site like Newegg, where in the winter you get bad user-reviews on motherboards mostly alleging them to be DOA. I bet most of them got dead due to improper handling by the user. Improper ESD control measures to blame.

My mate fried his RAM stick by mucking around with them while moving around on the carpet, to prove the fact that it never happens. It does- I can assure you. He didn't do anything else that could have harmed it. I watched him do it- and gleefully mocked him when his computer failed to boot!

any bare metal object will take the static electrical discharge rendering you "safe" to touch anything.
remember when you shocked your sister or the dog on the sofa, were they "wired" to ground?

having things grounded is only necessary for live electrical current such as a battery or wall outlet.

I think this is a myth, because I've never heard of esd destroying any components. Reminds me of how people that cell phones can cause static that will blow up a gas pump. Sorry if I'm distracting this thread.

OMG I will challenge you to this:

I will rub one of my sticks of 64 mb ram on the carpet for 1 min. I will plug it back in. If it does not work, you agree to send me a new stick. Kthxbye.
