hi
my cousin laptop got a virus that makes windows logout, as soon as he log in, and i found some solutions for it on the net (nor me nor him wants to format) including some hardwork ones, but since i have a hdd external case, i put the cousin hdd laptop there and connect it to my pc, now i need to know how to edit the registry of the xp in that partition, any ideas?
thanks for the help :)

this is what I would do, put the HD back in the laptop, boot into safe mode(f8), then remove all items that are not required for the boot from the MSconfig in the startup tab and the services tab. Then reboot and run a virus scan like AVG - its free. This has been my method of removing issues of that nature

Thinking about it he not tried Securom 7001 fix has he ?.. As i went though it once were they told me do some thing and then it would not allow me to log back in as it messed up all the HDD letters up and what not.

Lucky i had my OS installed twice and had backed up the info changed. Was a nightmare though...

BUT more on subject likely how about booting up of a Ubuntu CD and using some of the spare space of the HDD so it would be dual boot ?..

So it goes to log him on but fails and kicks him back out?
If so, tried logging in as Administrator?

when logging in continously press CTRL+C. It might work. Then go to Startup and delete everything that looks suspicious.

It might be a .bat file. Right click it and notepad will open with the virus code. It should be something like shutdown -? where ? is any letter. Or it could be a shortcut. Right click and properties should give you the code

These "fake viruses" are not detectable by any antivirus. So don't blame them

I have uploaded a sample of this "virus". Don't worry. It is harmless. Once you click on it you will be notified that your system is shutting down. It will be fine on next boot(unless you put it in startup folder). When a shutdown has been started you can just go to Start>Run and type shutdown -a

it wouldnt be the first time i was wrong but as far as i know 99% of all viruses are self replicating meaning "any" hard drive you connect to an infected system is also infected the second it is read by the system, it does not have to be booted from to transfer a virus. so i would say all you did was spread the virus to both systems.
