Oh my what next now?

After reinstalling IE7 to get rid of my problem about not being able to access internet options not even from the control panel, I ran CCCleaner.

Never used that program before, and so I did something wrong...

Windows didn't even start loading, after the POST I got written "NTLDR is missing, press Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot". Obviously rebooting gave me the same message.

So I put in my XP CD and ran a windows repair.

The problem was solved and everything was fine... until I came to installing windows updates. I had no problem downloading them, but when I tried to install I kept getting this:

It won't let me install anything even if I do it 'custom' one by one.

I managed to install only one update - "Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1" And there are 84 updates which I've downloaded and can't install.

I think CCCleaner isn't the culprit for the updates not being able to install. More likely when I ran it for the first time I deleted some important registry entry which gave me the NTLDR error necessitating windows repair.

I thought after windows repair everything should be working perfectly fine... :(

I've been thinking - perhaps this could be happening because I had SP3 installed before the windows repair? Now I don't have SP3, and I wasn't going to install it before I fully upgrade SP2........

Believe me the best thing is a fresh install.. I always manage to do something silly with my Windows, and last time the same thing "NTLDR is missing" came up. I just got so fed up, I re-installed it.

I have noticed that sometimes for some odd reason, my XP CD "forgets" to install certain components. But that I can blame on the 5 year old CD device...

Thanks but I'm so not in the mood to reinstall windows lol! :banghead:

I'm going around it, and it's working....

What I'm doing is, for example one of the 84 updates is KB886185. So I went to www.microsoft.com/downloads, downloaded it from there onto my hdd, and it installed without problems.

So I can install them now. Just not automatically:ohwell:... and the prospect of repeating the above procedure for 83 more times looks...

I tried your advice WileE. Surprisingly, the problem is persisting.

The only update which installed correctly and automatically is "Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1".

Now I've been trying to install them manually.

What is weird is that as I go along I am realising that not all these updates are good for me!
For example, I get one KBsomething, which when I check it out see that it is for IE7 on Vista. And I have XP... :twitch: Also, some of the updates there are for server, or for Windows 2000.

Something's really wrong. I shouldn't even be getting the option to install these in Windows Updage... :ohwell:

Try reading here for some info on your problem, you might have to manually register them-

http://windowssecrets.com/2007/09/27/03-Stealth-Windows-update-prevents-XP-repair

I'll check that out.

I had read that. However the problem MS is addressing there is when the update client files of the pc don't recognise that the pc is not updated and hence don't download the updates. My updates download fine. In fact I'm even getting downloaded updates which I do not need (win2000, vista, server...) The problem is getting the correct updates installed...

For example, I'm getting KB933729 in my list. That's for Vista!

I had the same problem when i repaired my O/S, i forgot the steps on how to fixed it, but it is in the microsoft support forum.

You have to reinstall the windows updater, then restart the updating service.

edit: Found it...http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

Thank you very much! This did the trick:

Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
b. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
net stop wuauserv

2. Register the Wups2.dll file. To do this, follow these steps:
a. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll
b. Click OK on each verification message that you receive.

3. Type the following command at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:
net start wuauserv
4. Exit the command prompt. To do this type exit, and then press ENTER.

If possible I'd give you many more thanks not just one! I love you! :D

No problem. Another problem that i had when repair windows is that my logitech mx518 mouse stop working, that is another pain to repair. Hopefully you don't have a logitech mouse. :D
