My house.
Processor AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Brisbane @ 2.8GHz (224x12.5, 1.425V)
Motherboard Gigabyte sumthin-or-another, it's got an nForce 430
Cooling Dual 120mm case fans front/rear, Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro, Zalman VF-900 on GPU
Memory 2GB G.Skill DDR2 800
Video Card(s) Sapphire X850XT @ 580/600
Storage WD 160 GB SATA hard drive.
Display(s) Hanns G 19" widescreen, 5ms response time, 1440x900
Case Thermaltake Soprano (black with side window).
Audio Device(s) Soundblaster Live! 24 bit (paired with X-530 speakers).
Power Supply ThermalTake 430W TR2
Software XP Home SP2, can't wait for Vista SP1.
AMD is taking the whole concept of a next-generation product flying out of NVIDIA's factory doors with an unnerving level of calm. The main points of a press conference...
  • The 9600GT, in benchmarks scores roughly between an HD3850 and an HD3870. The HD3850 can be had for $169USD, and the HD3870 can be had for $189USD. Suggested MSRP for the 9600GT: $169-189USD.
  • The current offerings from AMD are more feature rich than the 9600GT. Such features are DirectX 10.1, 55nm manufacturing, and built-in HDCP encoding.
  • AMD's offerings currently beat the 9600GT in terms of heat, power consumption and noise.

The validity of the second point can be debated, considering DX10.1 games are still a ways away, and most users are hard-pressed to find the exact difference between DX10.1 and DX10.

Is it just me . . . or does it seem like they're trying to convince themselves that they have nothing to worry about.

It's nVidia - their new hardware will seel even if they don't advertise or publicize it.

Sure, ATI is starting to solidify itself and take a stand again, but they're still far away from their old level of glory.

Maybe they though having bigger figures meant they were winning? :D

nvidia's g92 already wins in perf/watt and noise...

If we are talking about the same g92 in the 8800GT, the only reason it might win in the noise department is because the have the fan turned down by default -so far that I believe AMD is right when they say that RV670 runs much cooler than the g92. From what I understand, the newer 8800GT reference fan (slightly larger) doesn't help much.

My buddy has an 8800GT in his PC and when he kicks up the fan to be under 70C when fully loaded, the fan (he has the smaller stock fan) sounds so loud we can't concentrate on whatever game we're playing. My HD 3850 overclocked happily keeps around 70C loaded with stock fan at 55% and I can't even hear it over my other fans.

Personal note to Nvidia and AMD :

I don't care about noise. I can wear headphones.
I don't care about heat, unless your product dies because of it. (Besides, it's cold here and my 2 X1950xtx's heat up my computer room nicely).
I don't care about the cost of power consumption as long as the darn things don't overload my home curcuits.

I want to run all my games at 2560x1600 with at least 60fps with all the eye candy turned on.

Make it happen.

Thank you.

im sure they have something already to compete with the Next Gen Mid range, at least announce it, i dont think AMD is going to take things lying down, while they are doing better than they did with the 1950 Line and 2000 Line.

Benchmark Scores I've fried plenty o' parts when not OCing. Need to start doing it again to avoid problems...
I hope this is not the start of another "slide-show war"...
I hate that! Let the friggin' product speak for itself!
I'm already sick of biased reviews all across the internet, I don't need press conferences, slide-shows and the likes to convince me.

the g80/92 do not do full hdmi encoding on chip, ati cards can/do, mind you i have a g92 8800gt and have setup a number of 38*0 cards, the ati cards need a sound driver installed, and can FULLY support hdmi audio and video, nvidias cards still dont do that, but im sure they eventuly will, not that it really matters ill they force everybody to use all the bd DRM bullshit enabled :/

i am not a fanboy of either amd or nvidia. i believe in the better product.

feel free to look at my power consumption and fan noise numbers of g92 reviews or the g94 review later today.

what good does it do if the card runs cool but is noisier? as long as the temperatures are far from "hot" they are fine and in my opinion its better to have a quieter card that is slightly warmer

8800gt is loud if u wana keep it cool, the fan by default is STUCK at 10%, gotta use tools or bios edits to unstick it and keep the card from hitting 90c or higher :(

thats my main complaint, i dont got a gpu cooler to stick on it and cant afford one, my vf700 has 2 broken/striped studs, so its useless for the 8800gt, basickly im stuck with NOISY AS HELL stock spining up under heavy load.....

:toast:Im happy in general for ATI. It seems they are getting comfortable in there shoes again. It was hard sailing for them for the past 2 years without a doubt posting record losses. But, it seems they are finding there nitch again and are starting to gain ground since the AMD merger. With the tri-core Phenoms fixed, the 3000 series GPU's, and 4000's on the way. Possible IBM talk. It seems that they are back in the game. Still not as big % as intel and Nvidia and may never be, but atleast they are not rolling over.

yeah, to keep ur card cool with the stock 8800gt cooler from nvidia you gotta run it at 70 min then let it ramp to 100 when the chip gets hot, mine hits 100 in WoW and its not even that stressfull a game.......and it is LOUD.

Have to agree with Kreig. The statement looked more of a lame excuse than anything else. Let's say I don't care if the card is loud, I use a pair of HN-602. And the room is temp-controlled, so what? Evd of the day I want to run my games better, a consumer needn't concentrate on trivial issues pertaining to hardware and expects hardware to get things done. Maybe the 8800GT/9600GT run hotter/louder, so what? they run the games better end of it, don't they?

Look, I would love to see AMD kicking Nvidias ass, but the fact is, the 9600GT is just as fast as the 3870.

I calculated the avarage of all 9600GT benchmarks and the avarage of all 3870 benchmarks, there is less then 1% performance difference. ( I excluded 3DMark, that's not a game! )

The 9600GT is a very fast mid-range card. The cooling on the cards sucks though.

I say that if you can find a 9600GT OC ( with better cooling ) for the 3870 price, then you should get a 9600GT.

If you have to decide between 3870 and 9600GT default, the 3870 is the better choise.

AMD sas that they don't wurry about sales but they know just as much as you all do that the 9600GT WILL outsell the 3870 just because it's Nvidia an just because it has the next-generation number.
