AMD today announced the availability of AMD Phenom X3 8000 series triple-core processors, providing gamers and digital media enthusiasts with exceptional performance at mainstream price points. AMD Phenom X3 processors are designed to improve multi-threaded application performance over dual-core processors at the same clock speed. As the world's only triple-core x86 processor, AMD Phenom X3 processors bring multi-core technology to a broader audience in search of desktop PCs that easily handle today's digital entertainment workloads.

When paired with the AMD 780 series chipset, AMD Phenom X3 processors can deliver significant enhancements in gaming and high-definition experiences for mainstream PC customers. This AMD desktop solution can provide a full HD experience with support for the latest and most demanding formats, including VC-1, MPEG-2 and H.264 on a mainstream PC. With the AMD Unified Video Decoder (UVD), the solution can process HD playback on the better-suited GPU rather than the CPU so consumers may enjoy a smooth HD viewing experience-less lag, stalling and dropped scenes-in the latest Blu-ray titles.

"In 2007, AMD committed to delivering AMD Phenom triple-core processors in Q1 2008 and today the company makes good on that promise," said Bob Brewer, corporate vice president, strategic marketing, AMD. "AMD understands that today's PC applications are best accelerated with a range of multi-core products from quad- to triple- to dual-core processors, and that's why we now deliver the broadest multi-core desktop lineup in the industry."

AMD Phenom X3 processor and AMD 780G chipset based desktop PCs offer DirectX 10 game compatibility, so casual gamers can now enjoy enhanced gaming experience such as truly lifelike 3D graphics and dynamic interactivity in the latest game titles. Gamers looking to scale their performance with the addition of a discrete graphics card can accelerate their performance with
ATI Hybrid Graphics Technology. This technology can harness the graphics power of both an ATI discrete graphics card and the motherboard GPU in tandem, delivering in some applications up to 70 percent improvements in 3D performance. In addition, the AMD 780G chipset is the second generation AMD chipset to feature AMD OverDrive, a simple user interface that brings performance tuning to the masses.

AMD Phenom X3 8000 Series Triple-Core Processors
AMD Phenom X3 8400 and AMD Phenom X3 8600 processors can improve performance over dual-core processors on single-threaded applications and can scale with the same applications that scale with quad-core. AMD Phenom triple-core processors can also increase performance for multitasking usage models and multi-threaded applications, aligned with similar benefits available with AMD Phenom X4 quad-core processors.

AMD will be collaborating with ZT Systems to premiere the first system featuring the new AMD Phenom X3 triple-core processor on QVC during the Computer Shop broadcast, which is scheduled to air March 31 at 10 p.m. EDT. "New ZT Affinity desktops featuring the AMD Phenom X3 8400 triple-core processor deliver 'The Latest Technology for Less,' empowering a broader range of customers to experience the performance and multi-tasking capability of true multi-core technology," said Russell Carlisle, VP of Marketing, ZT Systems. "The ZT Affinity 5202Zi is a perfect fit for consumers looking for a stylish, affordable compact PC with the power they need for today's cutting-edge digital entertainment."

Availability
Systems powered by AMD Phenom X3 processors 8400 (2.1GHz) and 8600 (2.3GHz) are expected to be initially available from leading OEMs and system builders. For processor pricing details, please visit http://www.amd.com/pricing.

i love the random comments too 'when paired with this mobo, all the mobos features apply too! OMG!'

if you pair this CPU with an SLI board and 2x 9800GX2's, you get HIGH FPS with this CPU!

add SPEAKERS and this CPU provides LOUD SOUND!

forgive me, for i am tired and sick of marketing crap.

:toast: HAH! I hear ya... but i guess "when paired with this mobo..." is better than "This slightly handicapped, irregular quard-core..."

I love how they have a 4-core die in the picture.

i mean yes, a tri core makes sense - quads arent all that accepted yet and these will be cheaper. Its just sad that its still the same old phenom, only with one dead core.

Everything about this processor is sad...
I bet they put it into a really awesome system with top-of-the line hardware to make it feel pretty.

Everything about this processor is sad... From its birth-defects to AMD's marketing trying so hard to cover up the fact that its a broken quad core.

I bet they put it into a really awesome system with top-of-the line hardware to make it feel pretty.

no they pair it with a great onboard video, and rant about how its an awesome CPU.

The onboard video they talk about managed blu ray content off a 2GHz sempron, so its going to manage really, REALLY well on a triple/quad core as a media system. AMD have one good thing (the mobo chipset + video) and they're trying to leverage that gain as if its related to phenom.

Alright it's "a core more than dual-core" (pun-intended)

This definitely will eat into the Intel Wolfdale's market. People would definitely pay <$200 to get a tri-core processor. Bet Intel is working on a 'Core 2 Trio' but it will be a while till then, AMD shalt reap.

With what we do atm... two cores are good but a third core is better. I say that the fourth core is somewhat on the redundant side however.

at least with tri and quad everywhere, software will be more oriented to game from it.

As people in another thread are bitching about audio, it came to mind that vistas setup works well here. Yes it has software audio, but if you dedicated an entire core to it, you'd get some awesome sound from it. (Thinking the way EAX was before it became a marketing scam)

The link in the story before this shows the x3 msrp at $150 for the 8400 and 175 for the 8600. Hmm, I think I may go 9850 BE if these prices are accurate.

To make these CPU's sell, they would have to be dirt cheap.

People are already probably wondering if these are going to be a bit retarded like the quad core.

Lets not forget, these chips WILL NOT be widely available, certainly initially as they are only intended on release for OEM's and none will go to retail. The idea is, that if through OEM's they become widely successful they will release to retail but I doubt if we will see them for a while yet.

Yet more marketing BS. "Worlds first" BS.

Look at the pictures provided by AMD themselves! Thats a 4 core chip.

So what they SHOULD BE MARKETING is this:

WORLD'S FIRST SELLING OF BAD AND FAILED 4 CORE CPUs as REBRANDED RECYCLED 3 CORE CPUs. Yes, that sounds a lot more truthful.

Oh, I wonder if they managed to *fully* turn off that dud 4th core... is power consuption TRUELY 75% of a 4 core? Or is there plenty of inefficient power loss through the dead core?

Yet more marketing BS. "Worlds first" BS.

They are not lying in saying they made the first 65W desktop quad-core...they did, Intel made a 50W enterprise quad-core, the Clovertown. But it's BS for sure, just a gimmick to lure investors. End of each of such press releases on their website, they have a paragraph about (NYSE: AMD) and other company details....the intentions are clear. :)

Look at the pictures provided by AMD themselves! Thats a 4 core chip.

AMD doesn't provide them, it's just on the website, tech journalists like malware pick them up. Besides, that Phenom X4 image is not part of that press release, it's just under the list of press-kits for the Phenom series in general.

So what they SHOULD BE MARKETING is this:

WORLD'S FIRST SELLING OF BAD AND FAILED 4 CORE CPUs as REBRANDED RECYCLED 3 CORE CPUs. Yes, that sounds a lot more truthful.

No company would do that. Intel never marketed the Pentium D as "World's first ever two Pentium 4's with two drops of Gorilla Glue"
