Why do people own guns unless they plan on shooting someone?

All i wanted to do was read up on the new phenom x4's :shadedshu, People own guns for sport like i hate football and id rather go shooting targets than watch some guy run after a ball.... ok i only own a pellet gun but its still personal choice at the end of the day if i own one or not.

If you live on a farm or a place not exactly next to a police station and a couple of guys come up with shotguns with the intention to murder you, is the solution to just say "ok do it"? The answer is no! If you come out the front door with a shotgun first before they can get close, you aren't going to get attacked. Furthermore, I plan to learn how to use a fire arm for my own personal defense because one day I might need it. Guns are the number one deterrants to criminal attacks.

Like they say in Spiderman, "with great power comes great responsibility". If you have a gun, you have an obligation to use it properly and with caution. However, saying that no one is allowed to use guns is ridiculous. The bad guys can always go to Russia and get old AK-47's. If people aren't allowed to get a gun to protect themselves from these people, many more innocent people will lose their lives.

MILITARY guns are designed to kill people. Civilian ones are not. DO you understand what 'hunting' is? Do you get the idea that people used to HUNT for FOOD? Some people STILL DO THAT.

My family lives on a farm - they have pest animal problems with rabbits and foxes. Do you claim that my family are going to go murdering people, because THEY OWN A GUN! despite having a reason for it?

I own guns. Rifle for hunting, shotgun for home defense (not that I've ever used it as such). I've killed animals, and had delicious meals because of it for weeks to come. A gun, at least in the US, is a right. It's in our constitution, and its encouraged to own one (or two or five). Privately owned and registered guns are not a threat to humanity. People stupid/crazy enough to kill people are. You're targeting a tool for being a tool. It's all about how you use it.

Computers can be used to hack military computers, perhaps only the government should own them, eh?

i own a few bows and one gun, i like to trap shoot and hunt- a few people here probably know my stance on guns, but in the end i have no problem owning a gun for hunting/rec pursuits, lets face it, shooting clay targets is fun, it hurts know one and it allowed me to spend time with my uncles who i cant really see any more, im guessing you would change your mind on the subject if you actually ever get the chance to eat venison Chile or shot some targets, btw in the end someone has to kill that burger your eating in order for it to get to you? how is a slaughter house different from hunting? is it more humane?
