Ok i seem to be posting only problems since i arrived here at the forums sorry bout that.. :)

Ok. Lately my PSU has been making strange noises like a wire is hitting the fan and i usually have to hit it with some force or just a little love tap. Seeing as i have already voided my warranty by modding and i cant take it back, i opened it up and looked for any wires hitting the fan but was surprised to see there wasnt any near the fans.. I looked for anything else suspicious but found nothing

The noises only occur when i play a game which brings me to what i think is the problem.. I am not receiving enough wattage to all of my parts.. Now recently i posted a thread about the X1950XT and i have cooled these with a very decent fan and it works well as i have been able to run the card at default speeds which i was never able to do.. But the noises only started to appear when i ran it on the default clocks.

I have an Omega 500W PSU which gives 30.0A. I bought it about a year ago.

Is it just old or shortage of power. Or is this a problem someone else has heard of.

I do not want to sacrifice my new parts in this system so im thinking of buying a new PSU.. BTW im in SA.. No Newegg unfortunately.. :(

Any suggestions welcome

If it is the PSU. Maybe the fan is moving as there's a little movement in the more some than others which coursing it to catch maybe ?.. Any chance you could try a equal type fan to test it ?.

EDIT: My thinking if the fan is the issue it's spinning faster which leads to this issue

When Fans go out they can make many different strange noises.

It could be any fan...to eliminate the PSU FAN, next time it makes the noise, try stopping the fan with a pencil or paperclip for just a second to see if the noise stops. You can repeat the proceedure on each fan (cpu/gpu/case/etc) until you find the noisey one.

If it is just the fan replace it. If not make sure the PSU is actually making the noise before you spend money on a new one.

I have found that GPU fans usually make the most noise when they are going out.

Ok well from what i cant tell its definitely the PSU making noises because even on idel it makes noises but not as loud as when im on load.. I put my ear next to the PSu at idel and it still sounded lke the Fan was touching a wire

Edit: there is no other moving parts in a PSU other than the fans correct?

Remove the side-panel of your pc and check visually all the fans, cpu fan, gpu fan while the computer is working. There's a chance it could be the gpu fan since you mention the sound increases while gaming.

If you try to check the noise with the pc closed it's likely that you'll always hear it coming from the PSU...

If it's a high pitched and somewhat periodical sound, mine PSU does the same. Usually occurs when under heavy load, like prime95 or gaming. Once i could actually hear the power draw - my video card was choking at 1-2 fps and every time when a frame was rendered i could hear this sound! :twitch:

Anyways, it shouldn't mean a problem since i could hear my PSU since the day i got it, no voltage drops, but it is annoying though...

I've had a raidmax psu 450 watts that make a squealing noise whenever i was gaming, i did pinpoint the sound coming from the mosfets (i inserted a straw and move it around til i heard the sound stronger), needless to say, it died like 3 weeks since the noise started...

Just a thought when you took the PSU apart did you put the fan guard on the PSU the right way around ?..

And no there's no other moving parts in a PSU.

The sentence sounded the wrong way, just realized that. Card was a 9600pro, it choked because AA was set to 6x and AF to 16x in Far cry back then...
