Well, the d3sl+msi 8800gts would be a little less than $300 (w/ rebates on newegg at least), and yes its a little much for 19", but it leaves more room for upgrade and will last longer (as in play better with later games) than the gs and therefore is more "futureproof" imo.

he is only going to be running at 1280x1024 or 1440x800 and that's fine, GTS is unnecessary he is just going to have to shell out another $300 for a display down the road when he could be saving for an entirely new upgrade.

Alright alright, I'll concede the gs would be a better choice for the situation as is right now. My suggestion was based on a few hypotheticals, such as maybe wanting to get a bigger screen down the road and not wanting a new card for a while. But even w/ a 19", give it a year or so and the gs won't be able to play current (future) games that well while the gts at 19" should still be able to.
I usually go for buying the best you can within your budget, and a p35 and gts fit that bill.

at 1440 resolution the 8800GS either wins or ties in performance the 9600GT doesn't exceed in performance over the 8800GS until about 1600x resolution.

Eh, thats debatable to some degree, and the difference is minor. What is not debatable is that the 8800gts(g92) spanks them both.
So whats up fb, are you doing a short-term upgrade, or are you trying to make this last? And are you planning on buying a new monitor, or are you stickin w/ what you got?

That XFX version is crap. The fan is loud and cant be controlled! Grab the EVGA model or a HD 3850 256mb.

the fan can't be changed but it's not loud, eVGA model can be changed but it's going to be set at 100% anyways, XFX uses a non ref design with solid caps, aluminum plate and heatsink. I think it also comes with Call of Duty 4 but it might be for the Alpha Dog Version.

I dont recommend any gigabyte products. Even if you get it working the RMA team is pretty non-existent.

You having a bad experience doesn't make them a bad product. I've never had an issue with any Gigabyte boards. They are some of the best overclockers to boot.
Back on topic: If the OP can afford it, the GTS is the way to go. It might be overkill for current games on his 19", but it won't be overkill for the games releasing in the future. Considering he's upgrading from a 6 series, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say he needs his upgrades to last a while.
